Re: Cheap computer recommendations...

You are probably best off building your own. Then you can customize it to your taste and re-use your existing hardware, esp the HDDs. You could start with a budget combo to get an idea of the part you would need, then switch in parts that serve your particular needs. I agree with austin.texas that a...

Re: Mint 16 XFCE

I really like Mint 16 XFCE and XUbuntu 13.10. XFCE just seems to me the perfect balance between eye candy and features, on the one hand, and lightweight and smooth performance, on the other. I have had stability problems with Cinnamon; MATE just looks ugly; and KDE seemed to busy for my taste. I am ...

Re: Dimension 4100 and Mate 16?

I think you want to go as lightweight as possible. That would be a distribution with LXDE or XFCE desktop. LUbuntu would be a good choice. As always, try any distribution out on a USB stick before installing. That will also help him get over his phobia of Linux.

Re: Black screen after login

Could be graphics related, but if nomodeset does not work I would suspect it has to do with EFI. Motherboard specs say it is "dual UEFI", whatever that means. I think EFI is the more likely explanation if it is working fine via DVD but isn't booting once it is installed.

Sounds like a problem with efi. Do search for installing ubuntu on efi machines. I think you are.on the right track for looking to your bios settings.

Re: [SOLVED]Freezing while playing Minecraft

Weird, didn't you say you have an amd card? Anyway, Xubuntu 12.04 is.still.working for me. Just downloaded Mint Xfce to see if it is a Cinnamon problem or a Mint problem. Will report back.

Re: Help, mint won't start.

I would guess that cinnamon desktop is a dependency of the screensaver and you accidentally uninstalled it. Who knows what else may have been uninstalled. You could try to boot to terminal and reinstall cinnamon. I think "sudo apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get install cinnamon" w...

Re: Trying to get a removable drive to mount automaticlally

You need to edit /etc/fstab. Here is a tutorial on the basics. Do be careful, I have bricked my machine by mucking around with fstab.

Re: NUC and Linux

Have you installed libdvdcss2? Also with new dvds for some reason I have been having bad luck lately with vlc. Totem is working better for me. I think the movie companies have a new kind of copy protection that vlc has not caught up.to.

Re: NUC and Linux

OK, but those boxes are really not intended for gaming. Of course games are not going to play well on a tiny box with no graphics card. The UEFI issue is concerning as indicated by numerous posts on these forums of people who install Linux successfully and then are unable to boot.

Re: XBMC

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. Why don't you install it and report back? I am currently running XBMC through Ubuntu but I am curious to try it with Mint for my next upgrade. Mint makes sense for HTPCs because it comes pre-installed with media codecs. If it is working, I would love for ...

Re: Live USB boot to GRUB then black screen

Did you see this thread? Before doing the manual install of the drivers, you might try the method here, which is to use the command "nomodeset xforcevesa" in GRUB.

Re: Some beginner questions

Thanks for the links guys. Definitely doing some reading. Real quick question on my dual boot. My PC does have UEFI but I do have legacy BIOS enabled and no secureboot craziness. When creating my dual boot system are there any steps I need to take in order to account for UEFI? Also I'm using two se...

Re: digital camera pic's, what program

'file systems' has 23 files (folders?)....none of which are named 'mount'. You should see your SD card in the left panel. If you cannot see any files in it, right-click and select "mount". Mount is a command that tells the system that you want to be able to read and write to the device. I...
