Re: digital camera pic's, what program

"Mounting" just means that the computer makes your disk drive visible to read and write files. Most times an SD card or USB stick will mount automatically. If for some reason it is not mounting automatically, you may need to right-click on it in the File Manager and select "Mount"...

Re: Live USB boot to GRUB then black screen

I have decided to revive this thread due to booting Linux Mint with my BIOS set to boot in legacy mode not actually being helpful. I have tried and tried and tried but cannot get past the plain text GRUB menu when booting with my BIOS set to boot in UEFI mode. If you do a Google search it looks lik...

Re: Which version for my old laptop?

For an older computer I would be inclined toward Mint Xfce. 17 will be out soon and will be a long term support release, so try out a couple of flavors now, then make a choic in April.

Linux is most assuredly a real OS. I am not suggesting the USB is a permanent solution but as a method for installation. All I can say is you need to try something different because what you are doing isn't working. Since you purchased your DVD from a third party on ebay, one thing to rule out is th...

Boot the Live USB. Click the "Install Linux Mint" icon on the left side of the desktop and follow instructions. It is that simple.

Petra Mate Laptop While surfing my system froze, the only way I could turn off my system was to press and hold the power button. Ehen my system restrted although the lights turned onI wasn't able to get into the bios or start linux. How do I fix a crashed system with just my mint boot dvd? If you c...

Re: Mint 16 mate just shows ubuntu loading screen

I had a similar problem. I had installed to a cheap refurbished SSD. It worked fine for a couple of weeks but one of the sectors became corrupted causing failure to boot. In my case it was showing Ubuntu logo in plain text rather than the Linux splash screen because the graphics drivers had been era...

Re: Cinnamon 16 32/64 will not run right, frozen screen@star

I am saying you could try to burn the iso to USB and install it to your HDD from there. This is the most common method of installing Linux. You can download your preferred distribution, then use Unetbootin on any type of computer (although you need to find a working computer to do this, not the comp...

Re: Cinnamon 16 32/64 will not run right, frozen screen@star

Sorry you are having these issues. First off, there is no reason to buy Linux DVDs on ebay. You can download the ISO for free and copy to a USB stick using unetbootin or similar program. This will ensure that you have a legitimate and correct disc image ready to install--no scratches or corrupt file...

Re: Live USB boot to GRUB then black screen

In the second picture, it still says "quiet splash". Try to substitute nomodeset there, then press F10. What happens then?

Re: xfce instead of mate

I would recommend trying with a USB stick first. The problem with installing XFCE as a secondary desktop is it will also install about 45 programs that go into it. If you decide you don't need XFCE, you will be stuck with all of those programs and will need to uninstall them individually. In my expe...

Re: Live USB boot to GRUB then black screen

It does sound like a driver issue. You could try the command "nomodeset" in place of "quiet.splash". Here is info about what nomodeset does: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 I would also search around for information about how to install your graphics card correct...

Re: Will Linux ever replace Windows market share?

I agree with 90% of what you are saying and that is why I choose Linux. I was actually thinking of Mac as the primary competitor because that is what most people in my field use for work, myself included. I don't understand hy any rational peron would choose Bill Gates at this point...but still I th...

Re: Will Linux ever replace Windows market share?

If it ever does replace Windows in the market then it will almost surely no longer be the Linux we know and love. The Linux we know and love is open source. It's intelligent, free, and secure. It is not bloated. It is not crippled. There are two sides to this issue. The first side is the perspectiv...

Re: Will Linux ever replace Windows market share?

I do not think that Linux will ever replace Windows but I do think it will gain market share. Some people will never loose the Windows mindset, that's just how it is. Times are changing though thanks to cell phones. Android dominates the mobile world right now and it makes people more receptive to ...

You probably also have to open the folder that you are copying to on the external HDD with admin privileges. You have to have read and write privileges enabled on both.

Re: Freezing while playing Minecraft

I'm pretty sure it's a Linux Mint/Cinnamon problem cause I used Fedora for the past 2 weeks or so and the crashes didnt happen. Minecraft is still working great for me in Xubuntu 12.04 LTS after experiencing the freezing issue in Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon. I would be curious to try LM16 XFCE to see if...

Using the Live DVD, you should be able to right-click on a given folder, then select "open as root". You will be prompted for your password, then it will open the folder and you will have read and write privileges.

Re: No GUI after logging in

I had something very similar happen. The problem seems to have been a corrupted sector in the HDD that included the graphics drivers. The solution ultimately was to reinstall linux. I assume Windows is working for you. That tells you that it is not a hardware problem, it is something in your linux s...
