It's not clear to me what upgrades are implied.

Re: MINT 19 not booting tried everything?

Looks like you're going to have to either buy a new battery or keep the Toshiba AC adapter plugged in at all times for it to have a chance of working properly.

Re: ibm thinkpad hard drive

is it possible to put a new motherboard in it.if can it be pratically a whole new faster motherboard Not "new", but system boards from the T42 and T43 series will physically fit the T41 chassis. That said, those are all pretty old, outdated tech, and much newer ThinkPads can be had on the used, or ...

Re: Air Conditioner Vs Air Cooler

We live in a hot, humid climate, so.... it's air conditioning for us. However, I used to live in a more desert climate where some of our neighbors used coolers, but we got by just fine with fans only there.

Re: ibm thinkpad hard drive

The Samsung HM160HC is probably the best HDD you can get for a T41. It may not be the largest, but it is the best performing.

Re: Install Linux when cant boot from any device

Very likely the old Sony will boot from USB. Have you tried choosing USB from the temp boot menu with a USB device plugged in? Another option, if you cannot boot from optical or USB, would be remove the hard drive and attach it to a different computer that will boot from something other than the HDD...

AnyDesk has been the easiest and most reliable tool for me. I use it every day, both on my LAN and over a WAN.

Re: Wifi working but where is my home network?

Is it possible that your issue is a simple as something like your home router is operating on 5MHz and the old laptop is only capable of 2.4MHz?

Re: Complete memory not showing with "inxi -m"

Actually I was referring to the Intel 945PM/GM...the Intel Northbridge chipset in the ThinkPad mentioned. A little further research reveals that OP's laptop does indeed contain the Intel 945PM northbridge chipset, but I don't know if it's implementation there has the same limitations as it does in t...

Re: Complete memory not showing with "inxi -m"

May not be the situation with OP's computer, but I have an old ThinkPad T60 with Intel 945 chipset, which because of a hardware limitation, addressable memory will be (4GB - I/O space) ~ 3.2GB. About what OP is indicating. Doesn't make any difference what OS one is using with this particular chipset.

As your screen shot shows, the Transmission bit torrent client is already installed. Mint includes it in the default set of applications. Is there something more you are looking for?

Re: format d: drive to Ext4

If this is now, and always will be, a linux only system, ext4 will be fine. If you want to boot Windows on this computer and have access to the data, NTFS would be better.

Re: USB ports not working

If Acer provides a bootable BIOS update iso option, use that. Another option for when a Windows exe is the only option, is boot a Windows PE environment. Something I've never done, but a search of the forum should yield more onfo.

In BIOS there is only one setting mentioning USB sockets & that mentions USB 3.0 and that is enabled
Just for giggles, try with USB 3.0 disabled and see if it makes any difference.

Re: USB ports not working

If qbits suggestion of USB disabled in BIOS doesn't do the trick, it could well be a hardware failure, something like the USB controller/hub. I have an old ThinkPad where that happened. Fixed it with an express card USB device.

Re: [SOLVED] HDD ntfs to ext4

That's some good thinking there! And a good way to back up data on the same HDD. So one still cannot change formats without moving the data away, we just don't need another hard drive, only another partition, to do the job.
