Re: HDD ntfs to ext4

I don't believe it is possible to change the file system to a different format without data loss. Question now is, why bother? Linux system can utilize the NTFS partition just fine as is.

The big question I think most users would ask is: Why do you need to run 8 monitors?
That is certainly what I was thinking. Although, I feel like I need 2 monitors, another one or two would be nice, but I certainly don't need more. Curious anyway...

Re: Is there a way to keep a virtualbox Linux account always running on top for guest users?

I keep a virtual machine running all the time on a Mint host. I have screen savers and screen lock disabled on both so there is no need for a password to access either.

So the answer to your question seems to be "yes" from my viewpoint.

Re: How to use HDD with Mint.

If you open your file manager, do you see the external HDD listed in the devices in the left panel? If yes, then click on the device to mount it. Then you should be able to browse it's content.

Re: Very basic question re Dual Monitors

Should not be any problem doing what you describe. I've used dual monitors for years, and although neither are TV screens (which won't matter AFAIK), I've had different browsers on each of the monitors with no issue (or even two different windows of the same browser). My monitors are not HDMI (I'm s...

Re: FreshTomato: your experiences?

Hey Pjotr , thanks for the heads up about the new FreshTomato firmware. I had not heard anything about it until seeing you post here. I've been using Tomato firmware on my router(s) for years, but always thought it might be nice to have more up-to-date firmware. I'm not in any hurry to change my cur...

Hey Domzzy, which model IBM ThinkPad are you planning to get? That info is going to impact the choice of operating system as much as anything.

Driver manager showed no drivers available.
Well, there you are, that's what we expected since AMD has not supplied any drivers for Ubuntu 18.04 on which Mint 19.1 is based. You may have to use the XFCE desktop instead of Cinnamon, since it doesn't have such stringent graphics requirements.

Re: amdgpu-pro OS not supported

Best to use "Driver Manager" to install drivers in Mint. It could be that the driver version you've downloaded from AMD is not compatible with your version of Mint (or the Ubuntu it's based on).

Re: VirtualBox error with kernel 4.4.0-143

I thought that would be the case also, but one of the first things I did after I noticed my VMs would not start was change from the 5.x series and install 6.0.4 from Oracle. Still would not work with 143 kernel. I'm still using 6.0.4 but back on 142 kernel version

Yes, /home/username would be an excellent place for new directories. I think there is already a "Videos" directory there, but but youcanadd as many as you want.

Re: Unable to boot into live usb or system. Completely locked out. Help!

Could be a weak, failing power supply. I had one acting in a similar fashion a few years ago, and after everything else checked good we decided to try a different power supply. That did the trick.

Re: Mint installation on Thinkpad T520

Doesn't really matter much one way or the other. Linux Mint can cerytainly be installed on a blank SSD, and Mint can also take over the entire SSD and eliminate Windows in the process, if that is what one chooses.

Re: Unable to enter BIOS

Please accept my apology, I did not intend to start an argument with you. Since I know nothing about the kind of hardware you are using, I should have written that on most consumer systems BIOS access happens before the operating system is initialized. Now if you are using a LibreBoot or CoreBoot sy...
