How do I remount my filesystems in read-only mode?

I am using Mint as a small server and I have successfully connected an UPS to it. I am using nut to control the UPS. I am following the tutorial for emergency power off in case the UPS runs out of battery power: http://www.networkupstools.org/docs/user-manual.chunked/ar01s06.html#UPS_shutdown The tu...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

Well, since this is your first post on this forum, I guess that you didn't try asking for help on the Mint forums. I have found, that people on this forum are extremely helpful and friendly - you will never be bashed for asking even the most basic question. I hope you will enjoy our little lingo her...

Yes, I am testing the latest ISO on the VM, before upgrading the real machine.

Re: LMDE201204 + VirtualBox + nVidia

ok. This may sound very silly, but I reinstalled the VM and just applied all updates (just mint system and mint desktop). I didn't install anything else (not even guest additions) and now Compiz works after typing compiz --replace in the console (fusion icon does not). Cinnamon works out of the box....

Re: LMDE201204 + VirtualBox + nVidia

Thanks, I tried the DKMS method, but it didn't work. Kernel headers are already installed and so is the nvidia dkms package (i reinstalled it and rebooted to make sure). The Xorg log file contains only the following lines (repeated many times): [ 14.750] (II) VBoxVideo(0): EDID vendor "VBX", prod id...

[SOLVED] LMDE201204 + VirtualBox + nVidia

Hi, Like in the subject, I am trying to configure LMDE201204 64-bit. The installation works for both images (MATE & Xfce), but I am struggling to configure hardware acceleration on the VM. Does anyone know the solution (or a link to instructions how to do it)? I failed to find the solution on the ne...

Re: Need Help with Switchable Intel/ATI

http://linux-hybrid-graphics.blogspot.com/ - starting point http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1930450 - a successful report I do not have experience with Intel/ATI (I have nvidia), but check out the links above. And be prepared for some rough edges. Hybrid graphics is at an early stage of de...

Re: Which GPU to pick for Linux Mint?

I would say nVidia because of their good Linux support (nVidia has a long history of Linux support, while ATI/AMD has only recently stopped ignoring Linux). Try to avoid buying older series cards, as latest cards are better both performance-wise and price-wise. The 500-series have much better therma...

Re: Recording desktop and windows movies in Linux Mint

Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR5rmLJnby4 I just directly put an ogv file to youtube - the original video was 1920x1200 @ 50 FPS To change the format you can use whatever video editing software you like - a quick search revealed a simple tool "Arista Transcoder" available in the Pac...

Re: Recording desktop and windows movies in Linux Mint

install gtk-recordmydesktop package for the gui. It will put the recorded video in the ogv format in your home folder. If you want to record desktop sound too, then you need to route your sound output to the input so it gets recorded. To enable sound recording I did: 1. Launched PulseAudio Device Ch...

Re: Help with s-video out

I remember having problems with video via s-video on my 8600 GS on Linux. On windows too (it worked but was buggy). It was Nvidia driver issue. It just didn't show any output on the TV. It worked well with standard VGA cable. Your TV does not have a VGA input as far as google can tell. Perhaps you c...

Re: No sound in Firefox (not only flash)

I finally managed to solve the problem myself. After running Firefox from console and trying to play something I got: ALSA lib dlmisc.c:236:(snd1_dlobj_cache_get) Cannot open shared library /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so Installing libasound2-plugins solved the prob...

Re: Compiz Effects Problem

Which version of Mint and kernel do you use? Latest versions of kernel in Mint should support Intel out of the box. Then you can run Compiz on Intel card. (Intel saves energy and is more or less enough to run Compiz). Maybe you should enable and apply level 4 and 5 updates (update the kernel) and th...

Tracking "Linux Mint LATEST" - because that is the only thing, that supports Compiz - please do not take it away from us.

Re: HOWTO: simple-ccsm & emerald on LMDE

I was looking for a way to install Emerald in LMDE for quite some time. With the "window manager hell" we experience right now, its seems that LMDE is the only safe harbour we have left. It has tons of freedom, but a bit less elegance. Emerald will definitely help with that. Thanks.

[SOLVED] Multimedia keys control wrong mixer

I found tons of topics about sound issues, some of which pointed me in the right direction to find the cause of the problem, but I failed to find a solution. Sound works out-of-the-box on LMDE on my machine. I can control the volume using sliders in the mixer. I can also push multimedia keys on my k...

Re: Best browser for Linux?

Comparing Firefox vs Chrome gives no clear result of who is the winner. On my machine they are both really fast. The interface is similar in most cases, with only small details different. Both browsers frequently copy good ideas from each other and become more an more alike. What I really hate about...
