Great. I am also thinking about moving to Mint Debian. How many times did you encounter a situation since 2004, where your sid stopped working or had a major problem due to updates? Does it happen often?

Re: LMDE true rolling release?

I think the problem is not about the "rolling release", but about how updates should work. People want stable apps, no argument about that. History has shown, that new releases of certain apps are not stable, while others are really quite stable. For example Firefox 3, 3.5 and 4 never disappointed m...

Re: System freeze

Mine too is 63*C (when idle), when busy it can be even 80*C. Well if you are about to throw it away, you might just as well try the cooking trick. It worked for me twice. After first cooking it worked for another year, and now its still working after second cooking. Instead of an oven I actually use...

Re: Is Mono dead? Is Novell dying?

Any non-developer won't care about this. You can make a very nice application in any language. It is only a matter of amount of work put into it. For example I hate Java (from the developers perspective), but I don't mind using Vuze, which is Java based. I hate Python, but I still have nothing again...

Re: Is Mono dead? Is Novell dying?

No, it is not. Banshee is ugly and unpractical. Take a look at: http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1746 . I am sure you will be delighted to hear, that Banshee will be default for Mint 11. I actually installed Banshee to see what will we be dealing with in Mint 11 and found out, that Banshee looks and wo...

Explain to your students that just referring to wikipedia is forbidden, because anyone can edit it and write whatever they like. On the other hand wikipedia contains links to many scientific papers/books, so it is a great starting point for someone new to the topic. Wikipedia is forbidden to have an...

Re: Asus N53SV and hybrid graphics problem

Hi komasoftware, I am following the nvidia optimus mailing list, and so far there is no way to use nvidia gpu. The only thing that can be attempted is to power down nvidia using ACPI calls to save battery. Neither Asus nor Nvidia plan to develop a Linux driver (shame on them). When I boot Mint, I ge...

FTP Server help

Hi, I used a number of windows ftp servers (filezilla server, caesarFTP, etc) - all being very nice, feature rich, stable and with a GUI. I kind of expected that linux ftp servers would be even better (excluding GUI), just like other core internet services Linux is famous for (www, dns, etc.) To my ...

I believe we are getting very close to what Godwin's law describes, so maybe someone should consider closing this topic - everything relevant has been said already a long time ago.

Re: PPTP configration

First go into your package manager and make sure you have network-manager-pptp installed. Newer versions of Mint have this installed by default (my cry has been heard :P). Now you can simply click on your network manager icon and you will find an option to create a new VPN connection. Just follow th...

How to report Panic or segfault in Samba?

Hi, From time to time I receive an email from root@localhost telling me that samba executed the panic script. I enabled debugging as it was suggested in the email and now I have collected a total of 3 debugging sessions. It happens rarely (about twice a month, but no pattern was detected). I have no...

My endless speed quest continues... I found an easy way to measure pure network speed under linux (on linuxquestions) My /tmp directory is mounted as follows (from /etc/fstab): tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,noatime,mode=1777 0 0 On the receiver side type: nc -l 12345 > /tmp/bwtest On the sender side typ...

Re: Vuze firewall problem

Even if Vuze is behind NAT or firewall it should get access, assuming you allow all outbound access on the firewall. It won't be reachable from outside though. You cannot choose Vuze in the firewall because it uses random ports. The ports are chosen randomly at first run, but then remain constant. Y...

Re: Intel or AMD for Mint?

Both CPUs work well. I have both AMD and Intel machines running Mint - no problems with any of them. Now in my opinion nVidia works better than ATI/AMD on Linux and we all know that Intel and nVidia are married.
