Re: A fist question: HDMI sound?

I believe nvida card cannot produce any sound, so in this case HDMI can be used to transfer video only... correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Annoying behaviour of the forum -after login redir. to i

Its not a bug, its a feature :P. An annoying feature, although I did not encounter it yet. Its not the fault of the browser, so changing the browser won't help. Is in the phpBB code. One way to fix this is to ask phpBB developers to fix it. The other way is to ask Mint devs to fix it, but they are b...

Re: Install mint next to windows 7, but boot just loads wind

It definitely may be something to do with Grub. Either grub was not installed in the MBR of the HDD or was installed on another HDD from which you do not boot. To get a good idea on what is happening, boot Linux from live CD and download and execute the Boot Info Script (available here: http://booti...

Re: Speedstep, ac power, a battery so drained, it registers.

The most user friendly way to me is to right-click your panel (thats, the thing with your menu and clock on it), then choose "add to panel" and add Frequency Scaling Monitor. It displays current cpu frequency and allows you to set different CPU clock frequencies. Also take a look at "Inhibit applet".

Re: Newbie Screwup

Hi, It seems that you did a lot of things randomly, without any idea if the things you are doing would solve the problem or not. Right now I think its best to start from scratch and install the system again as we do not really know what state your system is in. Linux is a bit more permissive compare...

Re: How do I enable VSync using a Nvidia card?

There are many ways to do it. You can do it in nvidia control panel. If you use compiz, then compiz also has this option in Compiz Config Settings Manager. Finally the player itself (depending on which player you use) has the option to turn on vsync. It is advised to set vsync to true only in one pl...

You can boot Vista, check IP settings, then boot Linux and specify the same settings manually.

Re: Cannot connect to unsecured connection with browser logi

Not really. Just make sure, that network manager uses DHCP server to get an IP address (default setting). Try to investigate at which moment the problem occurs. - connecting to wifi (usually one green dot in the network manager icon) - getting an IP address (two green dots) - getting DNS server (spe...

Re: Can I disable MintUpdate and use KDE's?

I wasn't aware that some of Kubuntu's updates didn't play well with Mint Its not that Ubuntu updates don't play well with Mint. Just certain updates often cause problems. For example kernel updates will surely force you to recompile any kernel modules, that you have built. Sometimes a new xorg vers...

Re: add-apt-repository not found?

Hi, The command should work out-of-the-box. Lets see where the problem is. Try executing with the full path: sudo /usr/bin/add-apt-repository or sudo /usr/bin/apt-add-repository This command simply executes the gpg command with arguments. Try running gpg . Does it work? Try running with full path: s...

Hi again! I got my hands on some additional hardware and I finally saturated the Gigabit link.   At last I saw the graph coming to 100% network usage. Unfortunately it was in Win7. Linux completely sucks when it comes to network performace. For all performance geeks here ...

Re: nVidia Geforce GTS 250 unsupported?

Yes. The problem you have is not distro specific. You will most likely have it on any Linux. The problem is that the X server cannot load (X server is the thing responsible for all the graphics you see in Linux). It probably tries to load a graphics driver and fails. Its weird that it fails on a sta...

Re: nVidia Geforce GTS 250 unsupported?

In grub, the boot loader choose the option to boot in "recovery mode"
Then you can choose a number of options.
root - is the thing you are looking for
or netroot - same as above but with networking enabled

After we get past that point, we will be able to attempt to install nvidia drivers.

Yes, hemimaniac made a good point. Are you using old installation with the new motherboard? I did install Mint on a laptop and then it worked ok after moving it from laptop to desktop with totally different hardware (try doing this trick on windoze:-)) It is not guaranteed to work in all cases howev...

Re: Can I disable MintUpdate and use KDE's?

Sure you can just remove mintUpdate from startup and it will not appear in the system tray. You can use whatever other tool you want instead, but be warned that mintUpdate prevents certain updates coming from Ubuntu from being installed. This is because they are known to cause problems quite often. ...

Re: Please recommend a good motherboard

It seems you have WINE and VirtualBox issues and not mobo issues. I assume that Mint boots and works on your box. Typical mobo issues are: The system does not boot at all. It does not detect ram. Random reboots, random freezes, etc. Are you sure it is releated to the mobo istelf and not WINE and Vir...
