And why don't you use a native rar application on Linux? I do. Note that I say " for example ", and also note that I say "Under Windows..." On my PC, WinRAR is installed on my Windows partition, not for Linux. I arbitrarily chose WinRAR as a working example, to demonstrate syntax. Itching for an ar...

the xp install gets to the bit where you assign the c: drive, and it doesn't recognise the drive partition I am trying to install it to Whenever I install MS Windows, I use Ultimate Boot CD utilities (e.g. Maxtor MaxBlast) to prepare the HD. The menu file name doesn't have an "i" in its extension...

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
If Windows is already in the menu, you only need to change the number for the "default" option (e.g. "default 2"), counting from zero down the list.

Opera isn't included in the Feisty repositories. The Opera 9.2 home download installs on Feisty without problems. Microsoft must have a grudge against the browser. I can't use Linux Opera 9.2 to log in to my Hotmail account, as it keeps telling me that my login is wrong. Yet I have no problem using ...

I installed Windows XP as though it were the one and only operating system on the master drive. Then I configured (jumpered) that drive as the slave, and added another drive as the master which boots Linux. XP doesn't seem to care.

This superuser functionality is easily added to GNOME Bianca, for any file manager.

Use the Preferences > Menu Layout section to add the command gksu nautilus as a menu item, for example.

My Feisty fiasco happened with the Beta version, about a month ago. Good to know the HAL hullabaloo may have been fixed.

I luuuuuv Feisty's chocolate-brown wallpaper. Almost as much as I luuuuuv Bianca's dark green wallpaper.

I can run damn small linux Try Puppy Linux . It's not so damn small, yet runs in 64MB of RAM, and has a setup wizard for virtually everything. Codecs are included to play music etc. Your configuration data can be saved back onto the live CD if you run it on a CD-RW drive (multi-session mode), or to...

I liked what I saw on the KDE live Mint I advise you to partition your HD using one of the other distros. Or use the GNOME Mint LiveCD, and stop the installation process after the partitioning is done. Then boot the KDE Mint LiveDVD to install into that new partition. I too had a multi-boot setup, ...

so, uh, you mean I'm hosed? No more than my PC might be "hosed" by your hardware response to the same software. My PC has two HDs (HDA and HDB), which I configure to be entirely separate, in every way. I use manual BIOS select to boot either HDA or HDB, not a single GRUB. In this way, each HD is in...

I can only wish you luck.

With Bianca running okay, installing a Feisty partition damaged Bianca's HAL (hardware abstraction layer).

Option "ButtonMapping" "1 3 2 6 7"
Close all apps and restart your X server (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace).

Any difference with the mouse buttons then?

The top connector on the cable is for the master drive and the middle one is for the slave drive. That's true only when you see a twist in the wires between the two cable connectors, or for 80-pin ribbons, and then (both) drives can be "cable selected". Otherwise (without the twist) both connectors...

Am I the only person that doesn't like the trend to Live CD/Installer combo. I would much prefer and install only CD. The answer to that could depend on which PC folk you talk to. End users, especially those not yet sold on GNU/Linux, will likely prefer a distro test-drive CD that can also install ...
