now what appears to be the problem is the lg reader... it reads TOO DAMN SLOW! According to your decription above, the LG DVD-ROM is sharing its data bus with the HD, which can be a busy bee in a multitasking OS with virtual memory. The LG may spend time just waiting to get its turn to speak on IDE...

I've heard that it's not good to put a HD on the same IDE connector as a DVD/CD drive, because the HD data transfer rate may be throttled down to the top speed of its partner DVD/CD drive. My tinkerin' PC currently has this... IDE1 Master = HDA (HD boots Bianca, PCLinuxOS, or Win98SE[FAT32]) IDE1 Sl...

Ubuntu Feisty 7.04, which will be the basis for Mint 3.0 (Cassandra), consumes more than 2.5GB of root drive space when it installs, and that's before you load your own choice of software (which will also install onto the / partition). Methinks Boo 's half-and-half (5GB/5GB) suggestion is a good one...

Have a look at how I altered the permissions on my USB drive...I've got a 1 Gb usb stick that is recognized without problem but I can't figure out how to alter its permissions so I can write to it.

seems pretty much the same thing with a bit less stuff... Make sure you've got the Compiz "Extra" package. This adds numerous configuration options to the compiz-tray-icon applet. When Cassandra comes out, there'll be Compiz 0.3.6 and Beryl 0.2.1 in the Feisty repositories, as well as nVidia driver...

I just installed GnomeBaker, to check what it does with my deskptop icons. You're right, GnomeBaker's "Places" doesn't list every drive that Bianca shows on the desktop. However, GnomeBaker's "Places" does have a "Desktop" item on its list. When I double-click on that, my extra HDD partitions appear...

Mint Bianca has automatically mounted my spare 58Gig IDE FAT32 formatted drive, and placed an icon on the desktop Just double-click on that desktop icon, the GNOME file manager (Nautilus) should open up, showing the directories/files on that drive, so you can do the usual stuff (copy, delete, etc)....

I'm not sure that any answers to my question have come up Possibly because you've provided virtually no useful data about your PC. Not all brands of PC (or their components) are the same. To make a computer run at its peppiest and fully featured, your hardware might need special driver software. Li...

where is the glass effect? Windows can be made to appear (semi)transparent, like glass. Automatically or manually. The window glass can appear "frosted" by also using the blurred-background effect. These effects are complemented by window themes like Thin Black Glass (for Beryl Emerald) and LINsta ...

Give Compiz a test drive. It might work better for your particular setup. I recently switched to Compiz when Beryl meddled with the little workspace viewports on my taskbar. The Compiz cube can't be made transparent, so it isn't as pretty, but I generally don't use it anyway. What I'm addicted to is...

This might not be the problem, but, from what little I read at the Parallel forums, you need to have bash as your Terminal command processor (Bianca defaults to dash ). Go Terminal and enter... sudo bash rm /bin/sh ln -s /bin/bash /bin/sh exit Now try to install your software. You can go back to das...

It's probably fair to say that without Beryl or something like it you're safe with sudoing nvidia settings. The xorg.conf file isn't just for video settings. The X server also controls the operation of other devices that can need to be customized, such as the keyboard and mouse . Just one "update" ...

How do I setup the buttons on the mouse, so that no matter what is pressed, it is always a left-click? My optical wheel-mouse has two buttons, and emulates a third. I could disable the virtual 3rd button, but that isn't necessary. For this example, all 3 buttons will be mapped to the left button (#...

I just FDISKed the whole C:/ and reinstalled Gnome in one new primary, formatted FAT32 partition. You installed Linux onto a FAT32 partition? Surely any nervousness about GParted became irrelevant once you decided to blow your partitions to smithereens anyway! Much can be learned from inconsequenti...
