Re: grub entry please?

Thanks for all your help, AK Dave! I guess I leave edd alone then.

So it's working now, but I'd still like to see an original grub block created by the Mint installer. I'd feel a lot safer I didn't forgot anything which might cause problems later. Can anyone please just post it?

Re: grub entry please?

791 corresponds to 1024x768 with a 64k framebuffer. Does that correctly correspond to your hardware? You might try dumbing down to 773. Yes, all my other Linux versions work with 791 as bootsplash framebuffer. Try this: kernel (hd0,11)/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda12 edd=off vga=normal splash I'm not famil...

Re: grub entry please?

Perhaps start by posting your own menu.lst. What would that be good for? But if you insist, here it is: timeout 15 color cyan/blue white/blue foreground ffffff background 0639a1 gfxmenu /boot/grub/melamessage #title Sabayon Linux x86-64 (genkernel-x86_64-2.6.27-sabayon) #title Sabayon at sda9 #root...

grub entry please?

Hi, I didn't want Mint to mess up grub of my other Linux distributions (six actually) so I did not install grub when installing Mint and manually wrote a Mint grub entry for my control and backup system that handles the boot process. One problem, however: Splash screen does not work and I get some g...

Re: Dual Boot Setup

Gavin, you were a little faster than me, so here's an update to my original post: Do not use a separate home partition, just a huge data partition with ext3. There are windows drivers for ext3, so install them and you can access the data partition with windows. If this causes too much trouble, you c...

Re: New dual boot attempt

I'm not sure what your're trying to ask... If you want to create a double boot system for windows and mint, best do it the following way: Install windows first (create a partition with half the space available) then boot the mint installer. Choose manual and create a small swap partition (about doub...

What's "kdesu" for Gnome? [SOLVED]:gksu

Hi, I'm using Gnome for the first time because KDE4 doesn't seem ready for compiz... But I still want to use dolphin, konqueror, k3b and other kde-programs which actually works quite well with Gnome! Just one question: To start a root konqueror, I'd use "kdesu konqueror /" in KDE. How do I start a r...

Re: Compiz wallpaper plugin - how do I use it properly?

i was just about to come here and ask the same question actually I know it IS doable but seems to be a lot of patching and recompiling. BTW, it doesn't matter anymore, because I love 1 click to open desktops and IMHO Gnome really sucks here: there is absolutely no feedback if file was just selected...

Re: New to Gnome - some questions

Alt - This will provide a list of options: Move Here Copy Here Link Here That's what I'm looking for. Now how can I make that standard, I don't want to press ALT because this is very complicated on my laptop (thanks to the location of my touchpad and mouse buttons - I almost need a third hand or my...

best application for .rm/.rmvb in Mint?

Hi, I'm new to Mint and I like it, but it does not play .rm/.rmvb media files out of box. Which packages do I have to install to get the best possible support for these files in Mint? I know there are a lot of programs to play real media, but in my experience on any distro there is just one that rea...

Re: Changing Distros but keeping settings & files....

I'm new to Mint, but I have a lot of experience with other distros. I think the best way to swap files or even share them with different distros is NOT to have a separate home partition, but a separate data partion for your user files and folders like documents, downloads, et cetera. Then, just syml...

New to Gnome - some questions

Hi, I switched from WIndows to Linux in the times when Suse6.0 was new, I took a look at KDE and Gnome back then, liked KDE better and have been using it ever since. Now, when I was checking out the Mint Live CD on my old laptop, I was quite shocked: Compiz ran out of box with acceptable speed! I th...

Compiz wallpaper plugin - how do I use it properly?

Hi, I want to use the wallpapers plugin of compiz with gnome in order to have different wallpapers for each viewpoint. But for it to show, I need to get gnome to make the desktop transparent in order to keep the icons but don't have any default background picture. Does anyone know how to do this? I ...
