Problem with conecting to Linux shares with the sudo mount -t cifs command.

When I use the command sudo mount -t cifs //<server>/<share> <mountpoint> , for example s udo mount -t cifs //WinXP/Elements /mnt/network , for connecting the client PC with Linux Mint 17.3 Xfce + samba to a Windows XP share, it is sufficient to use the server's hostname for <server> for connecting ...

Re: Security

I read the above mentioned sciencedaily article. I am wondering whether I should follow their suggestion and make the changes to /etc/sysctl.conf or leave it alone. Has mint patched this problem? I were you, I should make the following changes to /etc/sysctl.conf: echo 'net.ipv4.tcp_challenge_ack_l...

How do you setup files and folder sharing in Linux Mint 18 Xfce? Is that different from Linux Mint 17.x Xfce?

Re: Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon not so good as it should be?

I also believe Ubuntu's suffering as a result of the pace they've set themselves. I suspect a big part of this is due to the high number of substantial architectural changes that are currently being juggled- MIR, SystemD, Vulkan and desktop convergence come to mind, and it's bound to stress the tim...

Re: Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon not so good as it should be?

Anywho, Since Dedoimedo was quoted in the first post you might be amused by another: Linux 2017 – The Road to Hell Despite being with Linux at least twice as long at the author it's also taken me twice as long to reach the same conclusion. I think that releasing a new distro twice a year which Ubun...

Re: Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon not so good as it should be?

Will Ubuntu 16.04.1 be incorporated into the Linux Mint 18.1 version? No one knows. But if so, this would mean only at the end of the year (most likely). Taking in account the (unusual) great number of complaints about Ubuntu 16.04 and its derivatives this would be far too late. I think that the de...

Re: Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon not so good as it should be?

I think he should wait with installing and trying until the 18.1 version has been released .. Yes, and he should have read the release notes on Ubuntu 16.04 way before this too ! Some people are NEVER satisfied. I blame it on this new age of "Entitlement" . . :( Will Ubuntu 16.04.1 be incorporated ...

Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon not so good as it should be?

At http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/linux-mint-sarah.html I read the following statement: With none of the other parameters changed - my box and me - Mint 18 Sarah is just not a very good release. The live session is awful. I don't have any smartphone support, at all. Quite a few other aspects of ...

Why doesn't Linux Mint 18 install multimedia codecs by default?

In the previous versions of Linux Mint multimedia codecs were installed by default. Why has Linux Mint 18 abandoned installing these codecs by default during the installation of the OS? I think that installing multimedia codecs by default is a great thing.

Re: Upgrade from Mint 17.3 to 18 failed. Kindly could use some help, please!

I think that the best you can, is doing a fresh install of Linux Mint 18. Upgrading a previous version often gives troubles. Just like what happen when you upgrade existing MS-Windows versions to newer ones. Invalid (registry)settings and dependencies are inherited from the previous version.

Re: Xfce 18?

I think that you should wait with installing Linux Mint 18 until the 18.1 update has been released. The 18.1 release will be a kind of a Service Pack in which bugs and other issues have been fixed.

Re: Xfce 18?

A maintenance update for Ubuntu 16.04 has been released, I read it on http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20160725#released . Ubuntu 16.04.1 Adam Conrad has announced the release of Ubuntu 16.04.1, the first maintenance update of the distribution's latest long-term support branch. This version i...

Re: Xfce 18?

Why can't you just install Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon Stable and then use the Software Manager to install XFCE? Because running more than one DE in a session can make for special kinds of chaos, not to mention resource-management issues if you are running an underpowered system. I think that you can on...

Re: Xfce 18?

It would be a great thing that Linux Mint would become a rolling release. It won't be necessary to install new versions any more and apps would be of the latest versions possible, in stead of being stuck on older versions of some years ago.

Re: Xfce 18?

Ime, it requires some tweaking to "lighten the load" after the initial build/install. Without those tweaks, i found that ram- & cpu-usage is on a par with LM's Mate edition, and both LM's Xfce and Mate editions -- ime -- use more ram & cpu than Ubuntu-Mate and Xubuntu, respectively. The areas Mint'...

Does Linux Mint 18 support Nvidia GeForce 9400GT?

I run Linux Mint 17.3 Xfce with an Nvdia GeForce 9400 GT graphic card. I use the Nvidia 340.96 propriety driver. At https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers ... ubuntu/ppa you can find it. But does the new Linux Mint 18 also support the Nvidia GeForce 9400GT with the 340.96 driver?

If you want to use the latest versions of Wine, you should use Playonlinux. See www.playonlinux.com. removed.net can also be used for the latest versions of applications.

Re: Latest updates broke Samba

When the entry security = share is present in the /etc/samba/smb.conf file, the system-config-samba crashes when I want to launch that util. Very strange. This has happened since the latest samba update which seems to have a bug.
