Software in many distros is often very outdated.

Another example of an older version of a program in the Linux Mint 16 repos is Wine. At http://wiki.winehq.org/HowTo I read the following: Before you install Wine, make sure that there is no previous Wine installation on your system, either from a package or from source. If you haven't yet installed...

Re: quick and easy backup solution

sbackup is in the Mint repos. Remember to always use first software stored in repos before lurking around on the Internet . Only repos have stable, signed, tested and certified software for your distribution (PPAs are not part of the official repos). There may exist newer versions for whatever purp...

Re: quick and easy backup solution

At https://launchpad.net/~sbackup-team/+archive/stable you can use the PPA of the latest version of SBackup. SBackup reminds me of a general backup util for Windows. More info about SBackup see https://launchpad.net/sbackup/. And does box-backup also have a GUI-frontend like SBackup?

Re: quick and easy backup solution

Does LuckyBackup also support incremental and differential backups? Lucky Backup which uses Rsync as a back-end, does store the files to be backed up into a single large .ZIP archive. Backup uitilities for Windows like Cobian Backup, BackupMaker and AceBackup often works with full, incremental and d...

Re: Cannot view Panoramio photos in Google Earth

The old version might introduce some bugs (e.g. with font appearance), but at least the Panoramio photos will be working. Or with searching for a place in an older version of Google Earth, which will give an invalid HTTP request. Can be solved by removing the /opt/google/earth/free/libcurl.so.4 file.

Re: Will be Linux Mint 16 LXDE edition?

I don't know if it is sensible to completely replace an xfce-desktop with an lxde one in Linux Mint 16. I think that there is a big change that you will thrash your Linux Mint installation when you replace xfce with lxde. Some files, folders and configuration data of xfce might remain after replacin...

Re: Why Did Linux Mint Ax mintConstructor?

You can also use Ubuntu Builder, see topic "Any alternative to Mintconstructor?" at http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=160717 Ubuntu Builder is very useful for building your Linux Mint LiveDVD with the most recent patches and updates slipstreamed into the Live-medium.

Re: Arrange items in a folder by artist or album?!?!

But on the other hand WinAmp also arranges .MP3-files by by artist's and album name even when no ID3-metadatatags are available in an MP3-file. WinAmps arranges them by simply looking to their directory and file names only. It would be a great thing if Banshee would arrange .MP3-files on the same wa...

Re: Arrange items in a folder by artist or album?!?!

When I import folders containg .MP3-files in Banshee, Banshee only arrange albums and songs by artist's and album name in the browser when they are listed inside the .MP3 file as an ID3-tag. When this metadata is not present in the .MP3-file, the browser only lists "unknown artist" or "unknown album...

Re: Why are my applications not the latest possible version?

After reading all 4 pages of this post - of which 2.5 pages are a dated rabbit trail regarding obsolete versions of Firefox - I am still left with a nagging issue. A couple of months back I wanted to get my scanner to work with Mint. Its one of those Canons that say Windows X,y, and Z on the box - ...

Re: Why are my applications not the latest possible version?

Take for example Gnome Commander. The version of Gnome Commander in the repositories of Linux Mint 16 is version 1.2.8.15 while the latest version of this program is 1.4.x. At https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-commander/plain/NEWS you see that there are a lot of improvements since the 1.2.8.15 vers...

Re: Instaling Runic fonts (Fuþark)

There a three different Runic inscriptions: the Elder Fuþark, the Younger Fuþark and the AngloSaxon Fuþorc. The AngloSaxon Fuþorc was developed because in the development of the AngloSaxon language from the proto-Germanic parent language some sound changes had occurred. Which one should I use to wri...

Re: Removing LibreOffice 4.1 in Linux Mint 16

BtW, how did you go about upgrading LibreOffice? When I did so, I just looked at the LO PPAs that the app's developers maintain (there are two or three, IIRC), picked the one that seemed best for me, and added it to my sources list. And then the next time I ran Mint's update manager app (that thing...

Re: Xsane and Simple Scans abort when scanning.

Is the Genesys chipset in my HP Scanjet 2400 the culprit? At http://www.sane-project.org/man/sane-genesys.5.html I read that my HP Scanjet 2400 uses this chipset and I read the followoing about the LibUSB version: SYSTEM ISSUES This backend needs libusb-0.1.6 or later installed, and hasn't tested in...

Xsane and Simple Scans abort when scanning.

I run Linux Mint 16 Xfce with a HP ScanJet 2400 USB scanner installed. When I click on the Scan button in the programs Xsane or Simple Scan, they suddenly abort without leaving any trace or without any error message. Even though the scanner is recognized by the Scan program. Sane and Xsane have been...

Re: Running Windows apps natively in Linux Mint?

Re: Running Windows apps natively in Linux Mint?

At http://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu you can download the 1.6 version of Wine, which is the most recent stable version. Do the following in the terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine1.6
