Re: C# vs. others

It comes down to your definition of "better." If "easier" is "better" then C# is superior. But if "faster" is "better" then C is superior. I doubt either of you define "better" in such black and white terms in which case we're looking at a spectum of grey (and that's assuming there are no other fac...

Re: C# vs. others

So, you completely ignored the entire piece of my argument detailing the intense similarities between C and C# syntax versus the complete difference in thought patterns and hardware knowledge needed to code in machine language or asm. C and C# are easily comparable from a syntax point of view; asm a...

Re: Installing downloaded tar.gz

You might want to reconsider your statement about not wanting to use the package manager. When used correctly, the package manager is one of the biggest advantages that Linux has over Windows. For example, try opening up a terminal and typing this: apt install miro This will download and install the...

Re: Syncing tray calendar with Google calendar

I've been thinking about this problem for a while. I'll put it on my list to check out the source here and see if there's a feasible fix that I could apply without having to rewrite the entire applet.

Re: C# vs. others

eiver, The issue is that you haven't really countered anyone's arguments anywhere. You're countering by asking questions, which is not a counter at all but rather a distraction from the original point. Also, in your most recent post you say Actual programs written by someone? I think comparing a lan...

Re: Something happened to my Menu Button - NOOB MISTAKE

Easy! Right click the panel -> Add to panel -> Mint Menu

You might want to look around that "Add panel" dialog to see if there's anything else you might want to throw on the panel. There are some cool widgets :)

Re: C# vs. others

From when we spoke by PM I was of the impression this would be a sensible argument backed by good facts, but not only by facts. Ideas, real world implementations, not just bashing a language completely into the ground but showing the good and bad sides of each. You failed to uphold your end of the ...

Re: C# vs. others

Did you program in C#? I can program in most mainstream languages and most esoteric languages as well. Learning new languages is a hobby of mine. I have done most extensive work in C, Java, and assembly. After learning C# and developing a few small applications with it, I determined there was absol...

Re: C# vs. others

Mono works for Mac too? - Great. Your argument here appears to be "Java is bad because some Java programmers are bad programmers". A poor workman blames his tools... This is only partially correct. I agreed with the argument that Java supports more platforms than C#. What you quoted is just my expl...

Re: C# vs. others

Not liking Microsoft makes me a Mac fanboy? This is a Linux forum my friend, you will find many people here who aren't big fans of either company. As for It has quite literally no advantages over Java (automatic getters/setters? Please, welcome to objective-c properties) You included statements in t...

Re: C# vs. others

To me, C# is Microsoft's cheap attempt at imitating Java. It has quite literally no advantages over Java (automatic getters/setters? Please, welcome to objective-c properties) and implements almost exactly the same functionality. Their speeds are nearly identical as well as their syntax. If you're g...

Re: Ubuntu is phasing out the notification area...

"I've yet to hear a convincing argument to the contrary"/ What a coincidence, I've yet to hear a convincing arguement for these disruptions at all myself. Just because you see something as "trivial" does not make it so to other users. Stop thinking your view is the only correct one. Why the **** do...

Re: Ubuntu is phasing out the notification area...

At the end of the day, it's still people complaining about things being moved to different parts of the screen. If you have eyes, that shouldn't be a problem no matter how big a newbie you are. As for the notification area, I don't actually have a huge problem with it, but I definitely think there a...

Re: Ubuntu is phasing out the notification area...

You folks need to stop thinking like "power users" for a minute, and put yourself into the shoes of someone who has never, ever used Linux before. They get it installed and they're greeted with a completely different desktop, things aren't where they think they'd be, and buttons behave in a manner ...

Re: Ubuntu is phasing out the notification area...

Just as with the infamous "moving of the buttons" everyone is once again making a huge deal out of nothing. So, you just dismiss everyone else's concerns as "making a huge deal out of nothing"? Niiiice. I've yet to hear a convincing argument to the contrary. These things are so trivial.. people com...

Re: Ubuntu is phasing out the notification area...

You're saying that buttons on the right is easier than buttons on the left? That people will look at a completely familiar window with completely familiar buttons (albeit on the opposite side) and not understand how it works? I just can't believe that to be true. People are not that stupid. Change i...

Re: Ubuntu is phasing out the notification area...

Yes, that is correct MALsPa. Actually, it doesn't make any sense to have date/time and connection info in a notification area. They aren't notifications. It makes much more sense to have individual applets for these things rather than being forced into using a notification area. I wouldn't even have...
