Re: Ubuntu is phasing out the notification area...

Just as with the infamous "moving of the buttons" everyone is once again making a huge deal out of nothing. The notification area really is pointless if you think about it. Did any of you even read the article? If they can come up with a better way to handle these kind of things (processes running i...

Re: Linux mint 9 Release ?

Just to clear it up, Mint is never released as a beta. They do let out an RC (release candidate) shortly before the main release, but Mint doesn't run a beta the way Ubuntu does.

I've never been a big fan of that because of the possible compatibility issues, but as you said it's possible and I think a good amount of people go that route.

Re: IF I dual boot widows and later i want to upgrade to min

Of course, this will delete anything you have under /home and /, but all of that can be easily backed up and restored. Also, do you have a separate data partition? That also makes things much easier.

Re: IF I dual boot widows and later i want to upgrade to min

You can always do a fresh install over just the Mint partition. This is what I do every time a new release comes out.

Re: i need help

Well, sure, the packages included in the default repositories have been tested and should not have any major problems (theoretically speaking, at least), but there is no doubt that some of the packages are a bit outdated. I'm not talking about installing bleeding-edge software; a wide variety of pr...

PATRIOT7ME, Our issue with you has nothing to do with your lack of computer knowledge and everything to do with your general attitude and sense of entitlement. I will, however, give you one piece of advice. Do not expect sympathy from the mods on this forum (or any forum in general) while you're exh...

Re: i need help

Vincent,

The repo's aren't outdated - they contain the latest versions that have been completely vetted and surely won't cause any stability issues. Of course using more bleeding edge repos isn't a bad idea, but it's somewhat misleading to call the default repos outdated

Re: not minimizing

You're not clicking on the right spot. There is a small tab on the far left of the window list that has three horizontal lines on it, that's where you need to click to get the move option. Sorry, I should have been more specific before.

Re: not minimizing

More likely, he just added the window list further to the right than it should be. Right click the window list, select move, and move it to where ever you like.

Re: Auto Conky for Mint

In addition to an autoscript, we might want to consider a GUI that will generate custom conky scripts because of the extra flexibility that would provide. Perhaps something similar to https://sourceforge.net/projects/conkygui/ . Perhaps a little less technical than what's showed in that picture. Jus...

Re: other programs installation

Easiest way is the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (Synaptic is a little more intimidating to a newbie). Open them up and take a look, installation is actually much easier than it is in Windows because you don't have to search around the web for programs.

Re: (NEW) missing wireless bars from panel

I didn't say to right click and select properties.. I said to right click and select "Add to panel"

(Technogeek - considering the dialog he got for panel properties it sounds to me as if he's using Gnome)

Re: not sure where to post this

Code: Select all

apt install visualboyadvance
There's also a GTK package you need for the GUI.. I'm not on my Mint box now so I can't find the name for you but it shouldn't be hard to find. Try

Code: Select all

apt search visualboy

Then install the GTK package returned by that search.

Re: How to dump Vista (or any othe OS)

While there isn't anything technically wrong with throwing everything in /home, it's much better practice to keep data in a separate partition because there's no real reason to keep data with configuration files. Also, a reinstall isn't necessary if all you want to do is free up the Windows partitio...

Re: system failure after keypress

There are ways.. it would have to be an unlikely combo (most likely alt+sys rq+some other sequence of keys), but it is possible. I'd say lock your system before you get up. Ctrl-alt-L should do the trick, then you just have to type in your password when you want to resume and everything should be no...
