Re: SOLVED: Gparted shows 2 unallocated spaces, how can I jo

It's not external, my Lenovo U410 came with 1 small SSD plus 1 huge HDD. For a long time I thought there was something vital to Win8 on it, but it turned out it was being used as a Windows cache, a bit like a swap partition, and as I had turned off fast boot anyway so I could dual-install, I grabbed...

Re: [SOLVED] Problem while making a linux multiboot USB

Doesn't exist in my synaptic. Do you know how to find out what repo it's in? It could be one I lost while reinstalling but wasn't on the cache list.

Re: [SOLVED] Problem while making a linux multiboot USB

New issue: On choosing multisystem from the Mint menu, with the USB stick mounted I am told : "This application requires at least gtkdialog-0.8.3, please upgrade your version." I downloaded the gtkdialog-0.8.3.tar,gz from Sourceforge, but where do I extract the files to, the Multisystem drive( that'...

1. I thought that the Swap was supposed to be after sdb9 /home? Okay-I see, does it have something to do with expat_tony having Root on another drive? Some would put it after Root / and before home right? All the advice I've ever had said make root - swap - home in that order. I really don't think ...

Re: Partition space re-allocation

There is a golden rule that if possible, you don't change ntfs partitions with gparted but with Win Disk Management, and vice versa with existing Mint partitions (ext4 etc). WDM can't see what's in these anyway. You may get away with it, but 'may' is not really good enough. Once part of the Win part...

Re: Folder Icons Turned Brown!

And if that doesn't work and you run an nVidia driver, you may have a bug. There's been a rash of exactly these symptoms reported by several forum members in the past week or so. It possibly came from Ubuntu via an update between 8 -11 Sept, see here: http://www.webupd8.org/2014/09/recent-update-bro...

Re: Mint alongside Win7 64bit - disk space question..

I've got Mint on my SSD and I used to have W8 on my HDD - until I erased it as it was just more trouble than it was worth. When I had W8, my 24 Gb SSD was partitioned with only Mint '/' aka root (19 Gb), with the rest deliberately unallocated, for the reasons Derek refers to in his point 1). The lap...

Re: Mint alongside Win7 64bit - disk space question..

Can we have some numbers, please? How much does Win7 take up and how much do you have to spare?
Your very first job might well be to defragment your Windows progs & data drive to make extra space before you shrink it for adding new partitions for Mint.

I use the USB creator from here: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ If you look at the screenshots you'll see on one of them "Step 4. Set a persistent file size.....". You can choose a number up to 3999 (that's Mb) for storing the persistent features you make. I woul...

Re: Getting black screen after installing Mint (Y510p Levono

You need to tell us more about this install you did. Which option did you choose; to install alongside your Windows 8, to erase and replace it, or "Something else"? Did you follow any particular tutorial on this forum, or any other one? Did you learn about partitions, which ones to make and how? In ...

Thanks ex-pat tony. Yes my initial post was because I had problems knowing how to download Open Ofice, which I only wanted because I thought it would solve a problem with openning attachments. My wish to use Libre instead of Document Viewer was because the attachment that it could not open I could ...

Re: [SOLVED] EFI dual boot Grub failed (includes killing W8)

So i'd be fine with:
install as "something else" once more
sdb1 - swap, not touched
sdb2 - LM17 some flavour or other; root, but may include some data files
sdb3 - EFI bootloader for this drive only
sdb9 / 6 / 7 - not touched

I still have the wish to change the default programme from "Document Viewer" to Libre Office for all text attachments. Re: Need Help........ Folders and icon and changed to non-GU

We think it's due to a bug that was reported recently in Ubuntu, which of course underlies quite a few features of Mint You can read more here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=208&t=177987 - especially from near the end of the first page and onward. But there's not a lot we can do until ...

Re: EFI dual boot Grub failed

Simply install to a ~20GB / partition and do not designate a separate /home during installation and your existing /home partition will be safe. So does the sdb1 swap I've created take care of that buffering side of the business for both OSes? Obviously I'll only be using one OS at a time, so logist...

Re: EFI dual boot Grub failed

Well, an install was carried out, of a rather unconventional nature, I think. With consequences mostly good, a few not so good. What I did: Deleted all the Windows partitions, they're GONE. The installation manager showed Qiana still intact on sda1 . Did not touch sda1 Made a 300 MiB, Fat32-format E...
