Re: EFI dual boot Grub failed

Thanks for the command.
Both sda and sdb have a gpt partition table. From my last visit to the BIOS I know that EFI mode was on. So I'll stick with that. I hope it's enough to have just that boot flag on sda2, and it'll sort itself out.

Re: EFI dual boot Grub failed

I've decided largely to follow austin.texas' advice and started by creating /dev/sda2 on my SSD drive to function as the boot partition for my #1 install. It's 400MiB, probably more than I need but I can spare it. I formatted it as Fat32 and it came up flagged as msftdata , which I have changed to b...

Re: EFI dual boot Grub failed

@Derek_S I don't intend to 'lose Windows forever', as you say, because I have XP on a different machine, which is only ever online for a short time until I call up some Windows-based programs that I have failed as yet to run under wine. I used Windows just once last week, to get into the BIOS, ironi...

Re: EFI dual boot Grub failed

Hi hotpepperguy I was actually reading Rod Smith's website earlier today. I'm afraid I didn't understand it well enough to jump at the opportunity it affords. This is not a reflection on the way it's written but on my sad lack of tech skills. I'm good at analysing problems logically (when not panick...

Re: EFI dual boot Grub failed

If you are going to reinstall Mint to sda, the bootloader should be installed on sda's EFI partition, not sdb. Right? Do you mean on sda1 along with the OS, or in a separate - say, 300 Mb - sda2 partition? So the 260MB EFI partition on sdb becomes inconsequential - unless you want to install anothe...

Re: EFI dual boot Grub failed

GpSep15.png The above is my HDD prior to getting rid of Windows8. It's a shot by the live boot Gparted, which is why sdb9 is not shown as /home but by its ID. Here's an out-of-date shot of what it looked like when I could still boot normally. sdb_gp.png However, my focus is on sdb1-5 & 6-7 at the m...

Re: Boot & theme issues with Cinnamon.

Where's that link to the article about the Ubuntu update possibly causing this with nvidia drivers? It's the very last post on page 1 of this thread, for your convenience click on http://www.webupd8.org/2014/09/recent-update-broke-ubuntu-desktop-on.html . And there's link to here: https://bugs.laun...

Re: Boot & theme issues with Cinnamon.

How can we find out if this probable bug has been reported? If it hasn't been, whose responsibility is it to report? I wouldn't have the first clue about how and what info would be needed. I think it's a technical form to fill in - beyond me, probably.

Re: EFI dual boot Grub failed

The "Something Else" option is the only way to make it work out the way you want. Thanks. I looked inside the Lenovo directory and saw all kinds of drivers for onboard camera, touchpad, etc. I obviously need those functions, so deleting has to be carefully handled, leaving enough of Lenovo left to ...

Re: EFI dual boot Grub failed

I think the var/cache/--- list would be right too, but I too have used clean and autoclean. I did notice some surprising omissions in my list, and that will be the reason. I'm very happy to read what austin.texas wrote back. I'll combine methods - first install what I can remember, then do a backup ...

Re: EFI dual boot Grub failed

Would you mind looking in your var/cache/apt/archives and telling me if that's the same list? It's all deb files. Use compact view for a quicker overview. Or does it look like a shorter version of this, in the backed up File System on my external drive`? I would just need to compare this with what I...

Re: EFI dual boot Grub failed

Did you ever do a "save markings" in Package Manager like we talked about? It's a little thing, but it saves you some work installing all those packages over again. If the answer is "no", it's not a big deal. Nope, I didn't. But where is Package Manager's data saved? I can get into the hidden folde...

Re: EFI dual boot Grub failed

Thanks austin.texas. I don't understand everything I read, though. There'll be a lot of questions. The current /home partition is in a questionable state? But if you backed up before the Cinnamon desktop mess occurred that might be good. Yes, there's a backup of all open and hidden folders, w...

Re: Boot & theme issues with Cinnamon.

I tried once before with sda1 mounted, but didn't get the hidden directories. Now I have, and got to the history.log...but it only goes up to 8th September, and that's before the date the trouble started. But let me check that. EDIT: Yes, it started on Sept 11th. No jokes about that please. The arch...

Re: Boot & theme issues with Cinnamon.

Of course, to get at the Update Manager or the /var/... , I have to be able to see them. But all I can get to see at the moment are the live boot versions. The /var/log/apt/history.log starts and ends on 29th May - LM17 release day. Hmmmm.

[SOLVED] EFI dual boot Grub failed (includes killing W8)

It appears that either I no longer have the grub we put so much effort into creating in an EFI dual boot partition (sdb2) , or else it exists but Windows 8 is ignoring it and has mounted a successful takeover bid. That grub was called ubuntu in the setup menu (an automatic choice, not mine). In orde...

Re: Boot & theme issues with Cinnamon. Think I drove it nuts

It could be happening at the Ubuntu content level rather than Mint. http://www.webupd8.org/2014/09/recent-update-broke-ubuntu-desktop-on.html I'm departing to try the grub menu now. Back soon I hope (though not on this live boot :) ) Maybe we could even identify the update we received that caused th...

Re: Boot & theme issues with Cinnamon. Think I drove it nuts

Tony, In response to your pm, I don't think I lost any customizations I made, but I'm not certain. This is a new install, and I only remember adding one applet. It is there now, but I could have added it back in the meantime. Dave Dave, could you tell us (or show us with inxi -G or Driver Manager) ...

Re: Boot & theme issues with Cinnamon. Think I drove it nuts

Please post the /etc/fstab from the / partition on the hard drive. I have to open the hard drive first to do that. Hope it works. Re: Mint 17 Cinnamon unexpectedly changed

I've had exactly what you describe, also in the last couple of days. The old theme seems to be one from Gnome days. I was trying out Firebug (HTML/CSS editor) when it happened, but I now know of three people who were doing something different. Two people have separately and successfully tried the fo...
