Re: Updated version of Evolution?

It's a problem for me too... :( I think I've seen a Flatpack/Snap package for Evolution out there, didn't test it for I'll have to migrate from 17.3 to 18.3 first, something for which I don't have the time right now. That Flatpack/Snap package might be the solution for those who can't compile their ...

Re: Need newbie explanation on /mnt versus /media

/media is typically used as a mount point for GUIs, such as your GUI file manager, whereas /mnt is like an all-purpose place to mount file systems. That sounds like a better explanation than the one in the "hier" manpage. (IMHO, YMMV etc.) there's nothing stopping you from creating a dire...

Re: Need newbie explanation on /mnt versus /media

Nope. It's the opposite. The system will automount things under /media - specifically under /media/$USER. Yes, okay, there is a confusion on terminology: By "automount" I meant things mounted in fstab, and by "manually" I mean mounting them using the File Explorer (Nemo in this ...

Re: Need newbie explanation on /mnt versus /media

Thanks guys. Seems I was not the only one wondering. Let me try to summarize to see if I got it right: Apparently the difference is that /mnt is where the system auto-mounts stuff, /media where it puts manually mounted stuff. And in the second case the mounted partition is tied to the specific user,...

Need newbie explanation on /mnt versus /media

Things mounted through the GUI seem to land in /media/{user} . Partitions I automount through fstab at startup live, as expected, in /mnt . - So what is the difference between /mnt and /media (except that the latter is user-specific)? - Assuming there is no difference except the user-specificity, ho...

Re: Which kernels get security updates?

No, in 17.3 there are only 6 options, the last two (kernel) ones are missing.
It isn't really a problem, it's not like there is a new kernel upgrade every week.
Thank you for your efforts.

Where would I find that option? I neither see it in the preferences nor in the kernel sub-window.

Re: Which kernels get security updates?

I was editing my post while you posted. As I said, I'm on Mint 17.3 (Ubuntu 14.04 "Trusty Tahr"), and use a 4.4 kernel. But there are several 4.4 kernels. Which one is the one getting the security updates? Or am I supposed to always pick the latest 4.4.x kernel? Which would in this case be...

Re: Which kernels get security updates?

Excellent, thank you. I have a little problem translating this to what I see in the Update Manager though. For instance, the Ubuntu page states (at least I think it does) that for 14.04 "Trusty Tahr" (Mint 17.3 I'm using) the 4.4 kernel is supported up to 2019. Now which of the 4.4 kernels...

Which kernels get security updates?

AFAIK (please correct me if I'm wrong), kernels don't receive backported fixes (for vulnerabilities) unless they are LTS kernels.

Which kernels are considered LTS and get security updates?
Where can one find this information?

Re: Where in Mint is the "default browser" setting set?

Thank you, but as I said above (in the "Longer description" part), I already went there. :) The problem lies deeper, somewhere between that "Preferred Applications" program and the place this setting is stored ("Preferred Applications" is just a front end to change that...

Where in Mint is the "default browser" setting set?

Short version: All of a sudden my old FF 56 doesn't seem to be able to detect its "default browser" status. Yet it still is the default browser. Does somebody know how the minty FF checks if it has "default" status or not? In Windows I would guess by checking the Registry, but w...

Re: USB printer install? [SOLVED itself]

Never mind. The printer appeared after I removed the USB cable after nearly tripping on it. Apparently the detection process just took (quite) a while, over half an hour, but the printer is now operational. Except that it prints zoomed in, but that's a driver problem I guess. The printer bein...

USB printer install? [SOLVED itself]

Seems such a basic thing, and yet... I've been using a Canon S900 attached to another computer as a networked printer for years. Setup was quite straightforward. Now I want to use that same printer locally, using the USB cable. I somehow expected once plugged in, the computer would detect it, but it...
