Hibernate is scary and can cause really bad things to happen epically if you have complex system disks and/or encryption. I work with systems with encrypted hard disks and if "some how" the system goes into hibernation that is usually the end of the system. A complete system reinstall is required wi...

you need to set up a mirror of your mint repos on a computer. you can use wget and an ftp mirror site. if you use a http mirror it downloads lots of extra rubbish files. eg: #cd /var/www/mirror #wget --mirror -np -nH ftp://mirror.example.com/pub/ubuntu/ the ubuntu mirror is about 128GB in size. you ...

turns out he fixed it by getting rid of the "quiet" from grub/menu.lst and some "gui" entry in there too.

Yes a good idea.
I have an EPIA file server that can only use alternate to install. later on this system will be used as a front end media box so an alternate version would be cool.

Installing Xubuntu-desktop will not get rid of gnome.
You could install Xubuntu and automatix or sometimes you need to install ubuntu alternate (instead of server) and install XFCE and automatix.
Alternate is for when server or other installs go mental.
I used Alternate on my EPIA file server.

yes that is the easier way to use CUPS.
cups admin is on port 631 via web admin.
cups uses IPP (internet printing protocol) for communication.
A menu item that is really a webpage link to CUPS admin would be cool.

You can share out the printer using SAMBA.
the samba config file is /etc/samba/smb.conf.
It has lots of comments in it and printer setup section.
Or google a samba printer setup/howto.

Fortunately or not it only appears when there are updates to download from your sources. Ubuntu based distros are quite stable and updates are not as frequent as say Fedora which is more bleeding edge. I know it is a strange feeling when you login and there is no yum updater telling you there are 11...

You could try putting Mint on a USB stick drive and booting off it (if you can boot of USB).
I created one on a 1GB USB drive.
the hard part can be the partitioning of it.
I used fdisk first and then gparted to fix it up (start again).

fsck was using your /etc/fstab file to check the file systems listed there but it excluded the / partiton since it cann't check mounted file systems. so the fs it failed on would be the third one listed in your fstab (minus the root partiton). so what does you fstab look like? Using a live CD you co...

I would try booting off a live CD (like mint or some rescue distro) and fsck all the partitions manually.
well that is a good place to start.

Mint is only using kernel 2.6.17
so a bug in 2.6.20 is no big deal unless you compiled a 2.6.20 kernel for mint or got it from some other repository.
anyway you would have to replace the thermal.c file in your kernel source files and recompile the kernel.
