Linux onto an old laptop

Hello, A friend of mine just gave me an old laptop, and from what little information I can get to come up on the screen, it has Windows CE, Version 6.00, dated 2006. He gave it to me to "play with or throw away", so its fate is not important. I have a friend who could use a computer, as he is now us...

Re: Delayed launch from taskbar

Moem, I'm going to try to answer your question about "how I got the button on my panel in the first place". Any buttons that I have on my desktop I got by opening the webpage (if that's the right word) and clicking on a small circle with a small letter "i" in it which is in the left end of the panel...

Re: Delayed launch from taskbar

Moem, The following appears in the top border, after a cirlce with the letter "i" in it and a locked padlock; https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl I don't remember things very well, but I think that I got Google into my panel by somehow creating a clickable icon on my desktop and then dragging it down...

Re: Delayed launch from taskbar

Moem, You're getting ahead of me again. I'm not sure what you mean by your question, but I believe the answer is, "Google". Again, when I click on Google in the "panel", I get a quarter screen size window of GOOGLE, and then a full size window a second or two later. Again, this does NOT happen when ...

Re: Delayed launch from taskbar

To Cosmo and Moem,

While you were entering your suggestions, I was adding to my last post. Now, while I try what you have suggested, give me a half hour or so to try to figure this stuff out (I am NOT computer savvy).

Thank you again,
BoDill

Re: Delayed launch from taskbar

Cosmo, Sadly, I Googled, "User account in Linux" and got several answers, and the one that I opened looked very intimidating. Can you suggest some place where I can learn how to open a new user account for Linux Mint (to serve this purpose)? Also, I have two nearly identical computers (this one is a...

Delayed launch from taskbar

Starting a few days ago (I've been using LINUX for years), when I launch anything from the taskbar (like Google or the news) I get about a quarter-screen size picture for a second or two, then the full screen opens, and things get back to normal. First of all, this is not a major problem, and I can ...

Re: About Vbox

Again, To All,

For the benefit of anyone reading these posts who may be as backward as I am about computer technology, simply Google "Linux repositories" to get a variety of understandable explanations.

Thanks again, for your expertise and your patience,

Re: About Vbox

To all, Thank you for your help. At best, I guess that I don't understand how these things show up on my computer without taking up some kind of valuable space, but I'll try to find that out somehow (unless you can give me a link to something that explains it). Until I learn about this phenomenon, I...

Re: About Vbox

To karichen and all; First, I had spelled "virtualbox" correctly in the exercise, just not in my report (and I tried it again to be sure). In the meantime, I found this website and am considering trying the removal instructions that it lists (for example; sudo apt-get purge foo). Do you see anything...

Re: About Vbox

To karichen, First, thank you for taking the time and trouble go give me such a complete answer. Now; here is what has happened so far; After I typed "virualbox" into the Application Window (your fifth instruction), I got nothing in the "right hand panel". Then when I went back over to the "left han...

Re: About Vbox

Hello, again, Sadly, I have been trying to get all the Virtualbox stuff off (or out of) my computer with such terminal entries as these (and many more actually) with no luck; sudo apt-get remove virtualbox* --purge sudo apt-get remove virtualbox*--purge sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-\* sudo apt-get...

(SOLVED)About Vbox

Hello, Lately when starting my computer, I get a little window in the upper right hand corner that says something about “Vbox client is not running”, but it disappears before I can read it all. I have looked around the Internet to find out what Vbox is for, and am not sure that I understand its func...

Re: Two operating questions

Again to Cosmo; Thank you. It took me awhile to figure out how to follow your directions (I'm that inept at computer use) but I think I have succeeded. Since I just turned on the computer, and it took awhile to get started, I'm assuming that it is getting used to something new in the start-up proces...

Re: Two operating questions

To Cosmo, It seems that lately when I turn my computer on, or switch from one website to another, there is a hesitation of a few seconds. I can't put my finger on anything in particular (or I would have done that in my original post), it just seems to have "Built in hesitation" lately. It is not a l...

(SOLVED)Two operating questions

Hello, First, my computer seems to have slowed down a bit lately, and I don't know why. Is there some way to find out if a Linux computer has picked up a virus (or any other kind of infection)? Next, today I clicked on a link to this website; (http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/hero-dies-saving...

Hello, After searching the forum unsuccessfully for some reference to the "Log in" article below, I thought I should ask if we are safe. Actually, I don't understand exactly what it means, but the question is, "Should I worry about it?". http://www.engadget.com/2015/12/18/log-into-most-any-linux-sys...

Re: Error 107

To WarfRat and all, Ever since I started using LINUX, I have applied updates as soon as they showed up. Since I am not confident in my computer abilities, I thought that I would ask the forum if there is anything else that I should do to make sure that I'm up-to-date, clean, etc. Along the way, some...

Re: Error 107

To WarfRat and all, Again, thank you. To answer your question, no, I wasn't using Chrome, as I don't exactly know how to. At the top of my screen there is a line that ends with "Mozilla Firefox", so I guess I'm using Firefox. Next, can anyone answer my question: "Is there a way to check, or make sur...
