(Solved) how to upgrade from 17 to 19.1? via my USB ?

Hello, especially pbear, First, I am not good with computers, but somehow I learned about Linux a few years ago and have been using it ever since. Now my Mint 17 Qiana is passed it's support date and I'de like to upgrade to Mint 19.1. If possible I would like to be able to save my present “Desktop”....

Re: Linux Glossary of Terminology

To All, Thank you all for your responses, logic, and advice. It is my intention to close this of list posts with a positive comment, as I am impressed with the calibre of your answers and recommendations. I am a retired engineer whose career has taken me all around the world in a very high-tech indu...

Re: Linux Glossary of Terminology

Hello again, To answer a post above, by gm10, I picked the word "Widget" because somewhere I read that it was the name applied to icons (if that's the right word) when they are copied or moved from the desktop down onto the Panel in Linux Mate (although I now read that "Linux desktop" is a misnomer)...

Re: Linux Glossary of Terminology

To anyone who may be watching these posts, What I am driving at in this endeavour is a SIMPLE glossary to help people like me to get along with Linux a little more quickly and easily by giving them (I mean us) a little break in understanding the terminology, and therefore the function of some basic ...

Re: Linux Glossary of Terminology

To All, When I started this post, I did not know about the complexity of Linux Terminology among the various disciplines. I had started trying to make a “Beginner's List” of my own before I found out that I was on a fool’s errand. A sample of the definitions that I gathered from various places on th...

Re: Linux Glossary of Terminology

Thank you smurphos, gm10, and all, For some reason, your responses make me feel a little smarter rather than stupid. Since I have only used a couple of versions of MATE, I had no idea that there were such differences in versions of Linux. With that, I will no longer feel idiotic if I refer to a grap...

Re: Linux Glossary of Terminology

To All, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you; I think you have put me on the right track. First, for the benefit of anyone who hasn’t dealt with me yet, I barely know what I’m doing, and I chose Linux for my OS because I like it more than Windows. Now, I went to the dictionary through the link provided a...

(Solved)Linux Glossary of Terminology

I have been using Linux for a few years, not because I'm a computer whiz but because I like it, and the terrific support I get when I'm stumped about something. Sadly, whenever I write a post, I know that I am probably NOT using the correct terminology. Recently someone told me that what Windows cal...

Re: Making a shortcut to a Yahoo website

To smurphos, Once again, you are helping me out!!! I sincerely hope that some day I will be able to repay you!! First, Linux was inoperable all day today on my Verizon Line, and that is why I have not responded sooner. Next, I did what you instructed in the "CODE: SELECT ALL" box and it worked immed...

(Solved) Making a shortcut to a Yahoo website

I don’t know where else I could post a question like this, so here goes… When I was using LM 17 Mate, I opened the website shown below and very simply and easily put a direct link to it on my desktop, and also in my Panel. It still works in LM 17, but when I open it with LM 19 Mate, I have to go thr...

Re: Panel icons size or shape

To smurphos, Moem, and all, Thank you for your help, support, and especially your patience. Sadly, I still have a question, but it might require an entirely new post. In my post of; "by BoDill » Sun Mar 24, 2019 6:33 pm"; I mentioned that my "First Steps" menu (or window, or whatever) did not have t...

Re: Panel icons size or shape

To all, 1) Regarding photos; if I knew how to put a photo of my old Panel into a post, I would, as it seems that some of you don’t believe that I have icons, (or widgets?) in my Panel that are not square but rectangular. If there is an easy way to get such a picture, and put it in a post, tell me ho...

Re: Panel icons size or shape

To moem, Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I tried what you said, and the only selections I got on my "First Steps" tab are; System Snapshots, Driver manager, Update Manager, System Settings, Software Manager, and Firewall. I fooled around for a little while clicking on the various selections ...

Re: Panel icons size or shape

To gm10, I don't want to make enemies by laboring over this, but in my LM 17 Panel I had a few rectangular widgets (I hope that is the right word) including one that said "Dow Jones" with a slash under it that is 1 1/8 inches wide by 5/16 inch high in my Panel (which on my present screen is 5/16 hig...

Re: Panel icons size or shape

1) To Smurphos; Is the stuff in my last post, in the box marked, “CODE: SELECT ALL”, what you asked for in your previous post? 2) To Smurphos and all; What would be the best info to put in the bottom of my post-form? Perhaps: 2014 – 2019 OptiPlex-GX520, Linux 17 MATE, 2019 – now OptiPlex-790; Kernel...

Re: Panel icons size or shape

To smurphos and all, First, thank you for your patience. Next, since I evidently don't know for sure what I am doing, I am enclosing the whole result of inxi -Fxz below. Let me know if this is right, and/or you want something else. bo@bo-OptiPlex-790:~$ inxi -Fxz System: Host: bo-OptiPlex-790 Kernel...

Re: Panel icons size or shape

To kevin987, In your post, look at the line, "The easiest way to post the system information here is to click on the ...." which is followed by a box with "CODE: SELECT ALL" in the top, and "</> button above the post" in the box. Since I started typing this as soon as I saw your post, I will have to...

(Solved)Panel icons size or shape

I just got started with Linux 19 after years of using 17, and I am NOT a whiz with computers. When putting icons in my panel, I have figured out how to put different images in the icons, but have not figured out how to resize them as I did with 17. For example, the panel icon for Google News has the...
