Re: Strange Log on problems

This will be short, as I am working in the leather shop right now, but thank you "gold-finger". I will reread your post when I get time, and very likely ask your opinion on my upcoming computer selection(s). Also, I will undoubtedly be asking about how to strip my existing old computer of the things...

Re: Strange Log on problems

Well, once again I was typing away while someone was else was posting to me. With this in mind, I will put in some time making a living (in my shop at Old Man Leather), and check this again tonight or tomorrow. So, if you post something to me, don't get upset with me if you don't hear back until Sat...

Re: Strange Log on problems

First, thank you “austin.texas” for the link to the Win Partition website, I will be exploring that within the next few days if I ever get caught up with the work I've missed while trying to do this stuff. In answer to the question as to why I want XP in the first place, I have been using it for yea...

Re: Strange Log on problems

Apparently, while "gtsfer" was posting his recent correspondence, I was in the middle of about a half hour long writing of a post myself. Now, I don't see my post coming up. Do I have ro re-write it or is there some way to find it?

Re: Strange Log on problems

OK, I believe you are absolutely correct. Unfortunately my backup wasn't so hot either. I thought that I could back-up with a 32GB stick, and now that I plug it in to try to recover my Windows XP stuff, I have a lot of my important files, but not Windows XP. I did download a file or two and save the...

Re: Strange Log on problems

This is not a reply, but a simple question for you Linux experts. Is it possible to get one of you to do this for me? I would be happy to pack up my computer and all the USB sticks, etc. and send it all to someone who knows how to do this stuff. I'm afraid that I have screwed this up to a point that...

Re: Strange Log on problems

I humbly apologize. Ironically, I saw your note the first time around, but due to some unrelated stress I screwed up. Thank you for your patience. Re: Strange Log on problems

I am working, so the best I can do right now is post the results of your last instructions. I hope this is what you want; and I probably won't have time to to do any more until tonight. Thank you, bodill@bodill-OptiPlex-GX520 ~ $ sudo fdisk -1 [sudo] password for bodill: fdisk: invalid option -- '1'...

Re: Strange Log on problems

Well, I got my password taken care of, but I still have the log-in problem mentioned in the first post. I have, however, done all the updating that was signaled by the silver shield in the taskbar, but I still can't get a log in screen that wil let me open Windows, and I still get a lot of garbage i...

Re: Strange Log on problems

OK, that's it!!! I just ried the password that I have used all the way through these processes and it doesn't work. Is there a way to get a new password, or at least find out what is supposed work with my computer? By the way "gtsfer", since you were around for my last adventure, the brand new Memor...

Thanks, but I have tried typing my password several times (Is it the same password I use for Linuxmint?), and still, nothing.

(Solved)Strange Log on problems

I just installed Linux Mint 13, and have barely started using it, but have a problem that I coud not find among the posts in these forums. I have sincerely tried to figure this out on my own, looked around the web, and have gotten nowhere. Also, though I am not new to computers, I am not well versed...

Re: (SOLVED) install from portable flash drive

Hello again, Good news and bad. The good is that I got Linux installed and apparently working (I'm "In Linux" right now, and you will know why in a few seconds). The bad is that when I start my computer, after a few seconds of a loading screen, I get one of a few unusual screens that put odd things ...

Re: (SOLVED) install from portable flash drive

to gtsfer and all, Thank you. I do intend to do a clean-up of C: and will probably repartition the disk to leave a little more space on the C: side. During this ordeal I stumbled on a link called, "How to find and remove duplicate files" which I will find and use during my clean-up of C:. I don't pl...

Re: (SOLVED) install from portable flash drive

Gold_Finger, Thank you very much. I started reading the installation instructions that I mentioned before, and though I haven't done anything yet, it looks pretty clear and complete. I will probably re-partition my hard drive again after reading this installation procedure, among other things. Since...

Re: (SOLVED) install from portable flash drive

I apologize for any confusion I may be causing you. My hard drive has a total capacity of 40GB, and the "E:" part is virtually brand new, as I partitioned the drive a few days ago while going through this discussion about installing Linux. After posting the screenshot of my drive, I didn't hear anyt...

Re: (SOLVED) install from portable flash drive

To Goldfinger; The picture of my c: drive is without anything installed. I believe that the little bit of data that is on it came from failed attempts to install Linux. At this point, I have found a really descriptive "Install Linux" website (http://www.freeyourselffrommicrosoftandthensa.org/06-dual...

Re: (SOLVED) install from portable flash drive

I believe that there is not much more to learn here, and I want to get answers to my questions about getting from installation on a flash drive to the hard drive, so I think I'll start another topic. Thanks to everyone who helped!!!
