Re: temporarily turn off Update Manager

To hcentaur, After reading your post, I looked around for a "Close" in as many places as I could find to look with no luck. Also, the fact that Update Manager runs at will on my computer is NOT my imagination, as it has been bothering me for a very long time (years actually), and I just finally thou...

Re: temporarily turn off Update Manager

To MintBean and catWeazel, First, since I am not a whiz at computer stuff, I asked this question because I do a lot of time-consuming stuff with the stock market, and when my Update Manager starts running ("kicks in"), my computer slows down horribly. Maybe it's because I have an old computer, but w...

Re: temporarily turn off Update Manager

Catweazel,

Thank you very much!

Though I have been using Linux for years, I am still NOT very good with computers, so your help is VERY greatly appreciated.

temporarily turn off Update Manager

Often, when I am using my computer for an extended period of time (for instance when working on stock market stuff), the Update Manager kicks in and everything slows down considerably. I mean to say that it slows down A LOT. Is there a way to shut down the Update Manager and later turn it back on ag...

Re: have HP 1010 printer; don't understand directions

To pdc_2 and all, I don't know why this works, but I found a simple solution: As I was trying various things to open files on my desktop that have the ".odt" extension, for some reason I tried using "LibreOffice Writer", and it worked!!! Then with a document opened, I tried printing it and it worked...

Re: have HP 1010 printer; don't understand directions

To pdc_2 and all, First, from the Properties Box, I checked out three of the printers in the box as follows; First one (had a check mark on the picture); Description = HP-Deskjet-1010 make and model = HP Deskjet 1010 series, hpcups 3.14.3 Device URI = parallel:/dev/lp0 Next one (no checkmark) Descri...

Re: have HP 1010 printer; don't understand directions

To pdc_2, Thank you for your kind attention, I can only imagine how frustrating it is to deal with an inept person like myself. BUT, I have done everything that you have told me, and still cannot print correctly. The sample printing exercise simply gets me a "Document" with a couple of circular desi...

Re: have HP 1010 printer; don't understand directions

To make a long story short, now I am in more serious trouble; I tried a couple of the things recommended (first the "Administration - printing" recommended by pdc-2, then the dpkg -1 hplip) and neither one got very far. The "Admin..." one got me to a "Document Print Status" window which I watched fo...

have HP 1010 printer; don't understand directions

Using Linux Mint 17 Qiana, I have a HP Deskjet 1010 Printer, and would like to use it. It worked fine with my old Windows XP (because it was designed for it), but barely prints with my Linux computer. It does manage to print something, but it is barely dark enough to read, and the lines often are fi...

Re: Security

To uberdorf, Thank you. I did some of what you instructed, but could not find "Add-Ons" or "Plug-Ins" anywhere in my Menu. Fortunately, things seem to have sped up a bit. If anything significant happens in the near future, I will post about it here. Thanks again, especially for putting your instruct...

Re: Security

To "hangry", Thank you. I tried what you instructed (see "hangry", Nov 24, 11:22 PM), and got a constantly changing display. Near the top were two lines that seem to be named "Web Content" and "Firefox", and they showed numbers similar to these: %CPU %MEM 0.3 11.4 Firefox 4.6 10.6 Web Content Since ...

Re: Security

Thank you all, Sadly, I am not a talented computer user, so I sincerely am not familiar with terms such as, "ssh daemon, IPV6, LDAP, NFS, uPnP, Wine, etc.". I do appreciate all efforts to help me, so the "Thank you" is sincere. I will likely go through the exercises in the site that I named, and rep...

Security

My Linux Mint 17 Qiana seems to have slowed down considerably, so I started looking at "anti-virus" type posts in the forums, and found that most of the topics I looked at have hundreds, if not thousands, of posts. I tried putting things like, "Linux Mint 17 virus" in the search box, but it seams to...

Re: Linux onto an old laptop

To rene and all,

This may well be my last post to this topic, but thank you all for your help and advice. For now, I will pursue more realistic endeavours, but if something interesting happens regarding this laptop, I will let you know.

Thank you again for your time and patience,

Re: Linux onto an old laptop

To rene and all, At the risk of boring you to tears, the following is my best effort to answer your question about a "Computer" Entry: On the screen that comes up when the computer is turned on, in the upper left hand corner there is a tiny icon that looks something like a cell phone with the label ...

Re: Linux onto an old laptop

To daveinuk and richyrich and All, Thank you very much, I am encouraged. What I intend to do is watch for posts for a couple days, and will probably print all the responses and take the whole project to someone who knows more about this kind of stuff than I do, as I don't want to screw this up and w...

Linux onto an old laptop

Hello, A friend of mine just gave me an old laptop, and from what little information I can get to come up on the screen, it has Windows CE, Version 6.00, dated 2006. He gave it to me to "play with or throw away", so its fate is not important. I have a friend who could use a computer, as he is now us...

Re: Delayed launch from taskbar

Moem, I'm going to try to answer your question about "how I got the button on my panel in the first place". Any buttons that I have on my desktop I got by opening the webpage (if that's the right word) and clicking on a small circle with a small letter "i" in it which is in the left end of the panel...
