Re: New to Mint 19.1 Tessa

Thank you HaveaMint, Even though I have been trying this over a period of hours, and several dozen times, I tried your advice and just kept trying over and over again to get a result in the Panel with no luck. I get the same three icons over and over and over, and they still don't do anything when c...

Re: New to Mint 19.1 Tessa

Thank you Tomgin5. I will likely wait a couple of days to see if anything else emerges before I risk doing more harm than good. If all else fails, I just might try to reinstall Linux 19.1. If I decide to do that, and I believe that a MATE version would be best for me, do you have any advice for a no...

Re: New to Mint 19.1 Tessa

Thanks, but as I wrote in the last post, that IS what I did. Clicked on "Office Writer" and "add to panel" but what shows up on the panel is a group of three icons, which are in a dark panel of their own, and clicking on any or all of them does nothing. The exact same thing happens with anything tha...

Re: New to Mint 19.1 Tessa

When I typed "inxi -Sz", I got a confirmation of the 19.1 Tessa stuff. Have already tried "left click on Menu, then Office, then LibreOffice Writer, and selected "+ Add To Panel". What shows up on the panel is a group of 3 "Icons"; the first one is Firefox web browser icon, the second is a miniature...

Re: New to Mint 19.1 Tessa

When I type "uname -srm" into the terminal, I get;Linux 4.15.0-20-generic x86_64. When I type "cat /etc/os-release" into it, I get "Linux Mint 19.1 Tessa". Other than that, I would need someone to tell me what to look for and how to find it.

Deshtop automatic reorganize

I just got a "New" used computer with the stuff from my old computer installed, along with Linux 19.1. Naturally, all the desktop icons were spread around and evenly spaced, and nowhere near the order that I had it on my old Linux Mint17. I spent quite a bit of time reorganizing all the icons to the...

Re: New to Mint 19.1 Tessa

When I right click on the menu, I get three choices; About, Configure, Remove "Menu", if I left click on Menu, I get a menu selection, but nothing that looks like what I need.

Change my Form

I just got a "New" used computer, a Dell Optiplex 790, and feel I should change the information on the bottom of my "Form", but cannot remember how it's done. Help me?

(Solved) New to Mint 19.1 Tessa

I just got a used computer, a Dell Optiplex 790, from a repairman, and had him install Linux. According to the “Terminal” readout, I have “Linux Mint 19.1 Tessa”, and I have been trying to set up my desktop set up all after noon. My first problem is how to put icons in the “Panel”, or the black bar ...

Re: (Solved)Zip File

First, thank you very much for your reply, the advice and your concern. Next, if you have a recommendation for a virus scanner, etc, that works well with Linux, I would appreciate knowing its name. I believe that there are bogus "Scanners" out there that will do more harm than good. Please let me kn...

Re: (Solved)Zip File

To smurphos and All, Thank you for your concern. Since I am NOT a computer whiz, I am not sure what to look for, but I did search my computer for anything that had a resemblance to "Ohdcortland" and deleted it. I have noticed no slowdown, etc., so if you have any suggestions as to what else I should...

(Solved)Re: Zip File

For the benefit of responders, I am going to contact to originator of the e-mail/Zip file and ask if it was password protected. Since it took them weeks to respond with the e-mail that contained the file in the first place, it may take a long time to get an answer, IF I get an answer at all. I will ...

Re: Zip File

Gentlemen, Sadly I forgot to mention in my initial post that everything I try asks for a password, and I don't remember ever having established a password for this sort of thing. I have tried to do what you have instructed over the last few days, and have finally gotten to the point (in Terminal) wh...

(Solved)Zip File

My problem is that I have never dealt with a “Zip” file, and I just received one in an e-mail from the local Overhead Door Company. I have no WinZip program so far, but I seem to have copied the Zip file to my “Downloads” and from there to my “Desktop”. I have spent some time over the last few days ...

(Upgrade from Mint 17 questions) Solved

First of all, you may have crossed paths with me before, as I have come to the forum a few times with questions. I am NOT very knowledgeable about computers, but I learned to like Linux and my present version is Mint 17 QIANA. I understand that it will not be supported much longer, so I would like t...

(Re: Speed up/Clean up)Solved

To all of you who responded; First, thank you for your support. Next, I finally figured out how to follow the directions and I turns out that my system is already set up the way it is described in the directions. Perhaps I already did this some time ago; at over 70 years old I simply have very littl...

Re: Speed up/Clean up

First, since so many answered so quickly, I have not tried the proposed solutions yet, although I DID try looking at the menu and all sorts of other places with no luck before I posted. Please believe me that I do NOT just go to the forums unless I am really stuck. The website with the instructions ...

(Speed up/Clean up) Solved

In an attempt to "speed up my Linux", I opened a site which is supposed to help me do that. Unfortunately, the first set of instructions that I read with the idea of executing read as follows: " Clear the updates cache 2. Launch Synaptic Package Manager. Panel of Synaptic: Settings - Preferences - F...
