Re: CAD recommendations

For 2d, I was a longtime user of Draftsight, which is no longer free as of the end of 2019. On my mint 18.3 installs I'm now using librecad 2.1.1 appimage. It's a little rough but usable--takes a bit of getting used to for someone with over 30 years of autocad experience (un-learning is harder than ...

Re: LM 19.1 MATE 64bit - How to type the lower small 2 after CO2, please?

Thanks for the correction Kyphi, keyboard dyslexia here! ctrl+shift+u (release) then 2082 also works--types the unicode character at the next keyboard action. I've never used the compose key, I assume you are talking about "alt/gr" which I don't have on u.s. keyboards. I have found unicode handy for...

Re: What printer should I get?

I can only tell you my experience with Brother printers. A black only laser serves my needs very well, and I've been using an HL5370-DW since mint 13. Perfect operation, good quality, has only one glitch. That is printing from gmail if the page contains graphics. I get around this by installing BRge...

Re: Firefox 67 doesnt open my homepage at startup but often only a blank tab

After playing around with this problem since the update, I finally found the key. My habit has always been to clear history when firefox closes. (set in preferences). If the clear history checkbox is cleared, my google homepage displays as normal at startup. Or, if set to "use private browsing", it ...

Re: Firefox 67.0+linuxmint2+tessa killed my Ubuntu Firefox profile

I was faced with the same issue. I now keep my mint 19 profile separate from the 18.3 profile. I just went ahead and created the new profile then copied : key4.db logins.json places.sqlite from the 18.3 profile to the 19.1 profile (after backing up original versions) re-install addons. Now, instead ...

Re: Mouse way too fast!

You don't mention your desktop environment, but in xfce, there is a slight anomaly with this procedure. Before I got the "xinput" thing to work, I set mouse acceleration to zero with the slider in the settings manager. When I tried using the code I pasted in my previous post, it had no effect! At ze...

Re: Mouse way too fast!

Here's mine for a logitech wireless mouse: xinput --set-prop 12 "Device Accel Constant Deceleration" 2.5 I've never bothered to automate this, after boot I ctrl-alt-t and hit the up arrow til the command appears and hit enter. I use a couple of different wireless mice, both logitech and microsoft an...

You might try using the id number instead of the device name in quotes.

I have my keyboard shortcut set to alt-x in mint 18.3 and 19/19.1 xfce and it works perfectly. Thankfully, I don't often have to use it!

Re: Firefox 67 doesnt open my homepage at startup but often only a blank tab

Did some more experimenting, and I'm convinced that it has to do with something in my profile and "https://www.google.com". I've got a workaround that I'm using now on all but two of the laptops in our home. Since google is set as my default search engine, I just opened preferences/home, then hit th...

Re: Firefox 67 doesnt open my homepage at startup but often only a blank tab

Same here on mint 18.3 xfce--on 5 different laptops. Tried disabling addons, new profile--all the standard troubleshooting, but 90% of the time, firefox 67 opens with a blank tab. The other 10% of the time it opens the homepage set in preferences. Waiting for a fix though, rather than reverting to f...

Re: Clonezilla-live

On my installs of mint 19 I use version 2.5.6-22. Works perfectly on mint 19 & 19.1. A bit confusing when choosing a location to store the img file. On my mint 18.3 installs, I use an older version 2.3.1-18. Both are 64-bit and are used on thumb drives. IMHO, Clonezilla is the best, most sensible ba...

Re: Kernel update question

I ran Mint 13,16 (non-lts), & 17 for years never updating the kernel. It wasn't til the "spectre/meltdown" panic that I started to do kernel updates. It seemed for a while there that there was a new kernel version every 3 or 4 days. I soon tired of this, and went back to my "ain't broke, don't fix i...

Re: Linux Mint 19.1 - File Transfer Between Ext4 & NTFS Partitions

My experience writing/reading ntfs disks/partitions, and transferring files much the same as the other responders to the op. Never had a problem. That said, it is possible (DAMHIKT) to pull the plug on an external drive before the "write behind caching" has completed it's write, thus setting the so-...

I came to Mint at version 13 xfce, and soon forgot about windows. Even my technology challenged wife is happy running Mint 18.3 xfce. Thanks to all the developers who make this great os possible!

Re: Draftsight 2D CAD

I've been looking at alternatives myself. Been using Draftsight since the first version was released and it has been an up-and-down experience. DS is a pretty comprehensive and feature rich 2d program, although a couple of versions have been broken. Dassault-Systemes has also been a pain, and their ...

My thoughts on this as a user whose daily driver has been Mint xfce since v.13. -Since my Windows days, and continuing today, I consider all updates a crapshoot and you are well-served to adopt a system to protect yourself against a bad one. -The level system is not what attracted me to Mint in the ...

To get the network id correct all that is required is to edit 2 files in /etc. /etc/hosts & /etc/hostname. Must be done with sudo, just be careful!
