[SOLVEDRafaela incompatible with AMD Radeon HD 8690x series?

SOLVED I issued the following commands which solved the problem (don't ask me why it worked, I don't know) # apt-get remove --purge fglrx # apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-radeon Once done, I rebooted and it worked without and flaws. Original post: I was able to make Mint 17.1 Rebecca wor...

usb-creator-kde does not allow me to specify iso file

High Running usb-creator-kde (or usb-creator-gtk) does not allow me to specify the ISO image do put into the pendrive. When I start it, it tells me which pendrives are available, but shows me a blank space for the CD image. I click to select an iso image but it never shows up in the available space,...

Re: Heavy CPU usage & firefox

My two cents here: not always, but here and there I have an issue with gmail scripts. It just freezes my machine perhaps for several minutes. I and when I say freeze, I mean it. Nothing works: not the mouse, not the keyboard, not the function keys, not the touch screen (in one machine). It spins on ...

Re: Error: "Could not switch the monitor configuration"

My problem may or may not be related to the one described above, but they belong to the same category: moving between monitors (displays) and understanding the strange behaviours I see when connecting, disconnecting or activating a second monitor. I am using Mint 17.1 with cinnamon. When I connect t...

Re: Is Mint 17.1 disk I/O hungry?

Is there any tool that allows me to check the culprit in a more scientific way than searching, suspecting, killing and observing the visible consequences? sudo apt-get install iotop More info. here: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/55212/how-can-i-monitor-disk-io Thank you. Re: Is Mint 17.1 disk I/O hungry?

gvfs-metadata is a process that collects metadata for your file managers; think preview images for files. In certain cases it may need to do a lot of catching up, for example if you (remote) attach a storage device that you are browsing that has a lot of multimedia files on it. As found when Googli...

Is Mint 17.1 disk I/O hungry?

Since I moved to Rebecca (Mint 17.1 with Cinnamon) I've noticed my machines are in permanent disk I/O. The HD led flashes continuously. Sometimes with such an intensity that you can not see it flickering. It is more like it is lit up permanently. Using a little imagination and a lot of trial and err...

Re: Is there a way to fix a boot error without reinstalling?

Your home partition keeps your settings (in those hidden config files like .mozilla, etc). It does not actually contain any installed applications. After a fresh install you would have to install all those application all over again. But once you do the config files would be there if you kept /home...

Can I run dpkg -i againt .deb files in the archives?

I have been forced to reinstall mint because my machine crashed. It so happens that I have a full copy of the *.deb files that were in /var/cache/apt/archives.
Can I just run "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" against all those files to have back all my applications previously installed?

Re: Is there a way to fix a boot error without reinstalling?

Some news on the issue. First, the system works normally in non-graphical mode. When I try to start in normal mode, I get the message "keys: keep waiting or press S to skip mounting or M to make a manual mount" If I press M, nothing happens. If I press S, I have the next line: Keys: Then, ...

Is there a way to fix a boot error without reinstalling?

Hi. Qiana was working wonderfully. Then, it froze when I was removing java using mintinstall (I don't know if there is any relationship between using mintinstall and the freezing). I was removing java because it was not working under Firefox (iced-tea was not running). I turned the machine off, and ...
