Re: Running programs from desktop

However, going to the desktop and clicking on the icon, then checking properties/permissions, reveals a checkbox "Allow this file to run as a program". Checking that removes the error message.

But shouldn't this be a default?

(SOLVED) Puzzled with paste

Is there a way for me to paste images into this text? Let me explain: I use shutter to cut sections of the screen to an image file, and the clipboard, and it works well. One of the reasons for using it is to cut error messages from the screen to send to others when I am seeking advice. But I am havi...

(SOLVED) Running programs from desktop

I have installed Aisleriot so that I can run Spider Solitaire. If I go to the menu and click on games I see the Aisleriot icon, and if I click on that the program runs. Alternatively, if I right-click on the icon I get options, one of which is "add to desktop". So I do that, and the icon appears on ...

Re: drag and drop

Aha. I had two other .tar.gz files in the Downloads folder. When I deleted those the one I sought appeared. It was though the others were sitting on top of it, hiding it. Odd?

Re: drag and drop

Thanks WharfRat. Hadn't thought to do that.

Now, having run Find the Terminal shows it under Downloads, which is where it should be. However, the XFCE File Manager does not show it. Any suggestions as to why?

drag and drop

Being used to Windows, and very unused to Linux, I highlighted (clicked on) a file in a sub folder and dragged it, as I thought, to the parent folder. When I let it go it disappeared. I can't find in anywhere. Any suggestions as to what might have happened to it? It was a tar.gz file.

Re: Using Wine

That's a good point Jerry. I guess I just assumed a program running in, and provided as part of, a 64 bit system would be 64 bit. In any event I have ordered extra memory and will install XFCE as 64 bit when it arrives and then check. I'll post the result of this experiment in a few days.

Re: 32 bit or 64 bit

An interesting discussion ... For what it's worth I have just ordered two RAM sticks to upgrade to 2GB. 4GB would be better but this machine does not warrant the investment. So when it arrives and I have installed it I will upgrade the XFCE to 64 bit and see if that makes a difference. As the curren...

Re: 32 bit or 64 bit

The reason I ask is possibly odd. I am having trouble using wine to run a Windows 7 program which is a 64 bit program, or at least runs on my Windows 64 bit 7 OS. I have been wondering whether the reason is that I am trying to run a 64 bit program on a 32 bit system. Any comments?

32 bit or 64 bit

Thinking this relatively old lappy was a 32 bit machine I installed Mint XFCE using the 32 bit option. Now, having seen some other comments I have checked and the machine is actually 64 bit. Should I reinstall? From Sysinfo the CPU is Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5200 @ 1.60GHz, and the machine has 1GB m...

Re: Using Wine

Hi again Jerry

comments about 32 bit and 64 bit made me think - I installed Mint as 32 bit thinking this was a 32 bit machine but I see now that it is a 64 bit machine, so I guess the question is should I re-install. But that's not a question for this forum. I'll repost.

Re: Using Wine

Jerry, thanks for that advice.

But, still doesn't work. I am using Mint XFCE 32 bit, but the Spider executable comes from a 64 bit Windows 7 system, so I am wondering if that's the reason it won't work. Any thoughts?

Re: Using Wine

Hi Jerry N

Interesting that you have been able to get it to work. What file did you start with? Was it something like SpiderSolitaire.exe? Can you remember the steps you took to get Wine to work?

Appreciate your help.

Thanks Mark, Flemur

Slowly I acrete knowledge ... (I hope)

So if I want to distinguish two words in a name I should use the_name or something equivalent? What is considered good practice here? Or, more efficiently, where should I go to read up on good practice?

Re: Install Mate or Cinnamon desktop after doing xfce instal

Hi Wharfrat Thanks for your thoughts. Given that Xfce is working well I am not inclined to replace it, but if I did ... I would be installing Cinamon over Xfce, rather than installing it in parallel. As I don't have a great investment in Xfce I guess I could just do a clean install, in the same was ...

Re: Install Mate or Cinnamon desktop after doing xfce instal

Hi Ecco I installed Xfce on a limited laptop for the same reasons. Now, it works so well, I also wonder about switching (upgrading? to Cinnamon. So, is it an upgrade? Does it make significant demands on the hardware? If I decide to make the change, how do I go about doing this? Appreciate your thoug...

Re: Using Wine

Thank you Flemur for your comments. Yes, I had checked out Linus versions, and installed 'aisleriot' but I wanted to run the MS version. And I also wanted to use this exercise as a test exercise with Wine. The files that I transferred were executables: SpiderSolitaire.exe and Hearts.exe. When I said...

Using Wine

I am a very new newbie, so please excuse my ignorance. I often waste considerable time playing MS Spider Solitare and the like on my Windows machine and having installed Mint on this machine I thought to install these games programs as well. Someone said use Wine, so I went to the Software Manager a...
