Re: Can I type special characters with Alt+Keypad like on Windows?

You can also enter special characters using the "Compose" key. To set which key is the Compose key, click Menu, Preferences, Keyboard, Layouts, Options, Position of Compose key, and select which key you want to use as the Compose key. Then you can hold down the Compose key, and enter special charac...

Re: registration password is too restrictive

Part #2: Would become useless if I shared it online ;) Suffice it to say it's a system that involves a number of unrelated tasks to get each password... very inconvenient, but very secure. I think an argument could be made that this isn't necessarily better . More secure... maybe, hard to tell with...

if you have figured out a better solution, please share. otherwise, the use of a password managing app is pretty widely considered one of, if not the, safest choices.

Re: How install a launcher?

Try giving it a specific application to use to go to the URL. So, if you wanted to use FireFox, you could enter this in the command box of the launcher:

Code: Select all

Re: Screen projector and external monitor issue

I don't remember the specifics, but I had this same issue that stumped me for a couple of minutes when I hooked a projector up this past summer. Basically, the projector is being treated as a 2nd monitor. So, your laptop monitor is being treated as the primary monitor, and the projector is the secon...

Re: How to make NZBGet auto-start at boot?

Well, for starters... if you don't know what a script is, I'd make sure you figure that out first. Here is a link with the basic info you need to know: http://linuxcommand.org/lc3_writing_shell_scripts.php Once you have that figured out, and you know how to write a script that contains the command y...

The request to post in the correct sub-forum is a simple courtesy to the people trying to answer the questions. If it is something obviously in the wrong forum, such as an XFCE question in the Mate sub-forum, somebody might point this out and move it for you. But for something like this, just make y...

Re: XFCE panel print icon

I never really noticed this before, but I can recreate this error on my Mint XFCE installation. I have an HP printer hooked up to a Raspberry Pi, and all my other machines connect to the Pi via cups to print, so that does support the "only affects networked printers" hypothesis. And, just to add som...

Re: Ubuntu Security Warning (SCAM)

My guess is that it was a web phishing site that tailors the message based on your browser ID string. my mother in law got caught by a similar scam. got an error message on her iPad to call apple support. when she called they insisted on access to her windows machine with iPad plugged into it. when...

Re: Making XFCE Mint Edition look closer to the "standard" X

Greetings! Have you considered to add the "Screensaver" plugin to xfce's panel? By adding this button, you'll open the same screensaver-config popup you'll see when you open the "All Settings" feature via the whisker- or xfce-menu. Try that -- it might just be what you'e missing ... Honestly, I hav...

Re: linux mint 17.3 and phoenix rc flight sim

Hi Ken, First off, welcome to the world of Mint. Regarding your CD you are trying to run... my guess is that the CD contains a windows program, and those don't run on Linux automatically the way they do on windows. If you need to run a windows application, and you can't find an equivalent in the Min...

Re: Making XFCE Mint Edition look closer to the "standard" X

Much of the obvious differences would be in the choice of themes, number/size/location of panel(s), and what is placed on them, is it not? With one exception, you are correct. Just about every difference I see is purely cosmetic and I can easily change it if I really need to. The only non-comsetic ...

Re: Update manager, level 5

Sorry, my command that I pasted in there had the "$" from my command prompt at the beginning of the line. Try this one that doesn't include the "$" at the beginning.

Code: Select all

grep flags /proc/cpuinfo | grep " lm "

if you want to be sure, try:

Code: Select all

$ grep flags /proc/cpuinfo | grep " lm "
If that commands finds " lm ", that means your cpu shuold support a 64 bit OS

Re: Update manager, level 5

I try to wait a few days on security updates for levels 4 and 5 to see if the people start showing up on the forum reporting issues. It isn't a fool proof strategy, but if makes me feel a little more comfortable moving forward with them if other people aren't complaining that they broke their systems.

Re: PPA's: the main security Achilles heel?

how can we raise awareness among Linux Mint users, that they should be critical and restrictive about the PPA's they want to add? I think the only way you can reach most (but not all) users is through the MintUpdate software itself. Posts on the blog or forum will only get the attention of users wh...

Re: Newbie Setup and Hello

I loaded cinnamon on a machine that had a bit more ram than you listed. It worked fine, but I eventually moved to XFCE on that machine. It just responded better. XFCE is older and doesnt have the eye candy that cinnamon has, but I would rather have it be light and fast.

Re: cant boot from bootable usb

Are you sure your USB had the ISO loaded on it properly? Ive done that before, where I put an ISO on a USB drive and it wouldnt boot. Turned out to be issues with how I loaded the ISO on the USB to begin with.

So, along that line, how did you load the ISO on teh USB drive?
