Re: Trying to install Ruby with Gem

No, you shouldn't need to be in a specific directory.

first, verify that ruby was actually installed properly. Type this into a terminal command prompt:

Code: Select all

$ ruby --version
You should get a line like this:
ruby 2.1.2p95 (2014-05-08 revision 45877) [x86_64-linux-gnu]

Re: Changing Desktop Environment

I originally installed cinnamon, but later added XFCE through the Mint Software Manager. Now, when I log in, I can select one of the two desktops and log in to either one. Now, I've heard that not all DEs play nicely with each other. Usually, two or more resource-heavy DEs (like cinnamon & KDE) seem...

Re: Forum changed theme?

Hopefully, by now, you've heard that Mint had an incident where somebody got access to their servers and put a corrupt ISO out there for Cinnamon 17.3 and stole the forum database. If you haven't, check the forum, there is a sticky post with detail. Bottom line, change your password here and anywher...

Re: short cuts

It might depend on which desktop you are using, but on the ones I use they both have an option where you can right click on the background image of your desktop and get a menu. On that menu, you should see a "Create Launcher" option. That will pop up a little window that allows you to do what you ne...

Re: Can't access system settings

When you say you recently installed 17.3 Cinnamon... how recently? I'm assuming you are aware, but in case you are not, there was an incident where the ISO for 17.3 Cinnamon was compromised and anyone who downloaded that ISO from the Mint site on Feb 20 got a version that had been altered with malwa...

Re: Jekyll / Ruby

have you installed rvm? I think that is the preferred ruby way of installing and managing different versions of ruby. I'm not at my machine to verify this, but I don't think it is in the mint repos. I think I had to install it manually.

Really, no tabs on the panel settings editor?
That doesn't seem right.

if you create a second user account, and log into that account, is the panel still missing the sound applet?

Re: Does Mint getting hacked change security thoughts?

rustyp - ufw is the fire wall application that is installed with mint by default, but it is not enabled by default. gufw is just the GUI for ufw. However, you can do everything by command line without gufw if you are comfortable running commands that way.

What if you go into Settings -> Panel, and then when the panel manager is launched, select the items tab. Can you add it to the panel from here?

Re: How do I get stand-alone .exe programs running in Wine?

from the man page for wine: The program name may be specified in DOS format (C:\\WINDOWS\\SOL.EXE) or in Unix format (/msdos/windows/sol.exe). You may pass arguments to the program being executed by adding them to the end of the command line invoking wine (such as: wine notepad C:\\TEMP\\README.TXT)...

Re: Locked folders

Fixing your problem is probably beyond my ability, but the error message you showed does say to check the syslog. I'd start there and maybe post back anything in that file (/var/log/syslog) that might help people diagnose the issue. The more info you can provide, the better your chances are of getti...

I've had pretty good luck searching for info in this site via google. The search function on the forum site doesn't work that well, in my opinion.

Re: How to format an USB stick

I never even noticed that little mintstick utility was in there. The couple of times I've had to format a USB, I just used gparted because that was the tool I knew about. Looking at mintstick, that does seem a lot more straight forward than gparted.
