How did you run it, through command line or did you just try to double click on the file? I've always run it through the command line and i've always had success.

It would also help to know what errors you got?

Re: browsers

Open Software Manager, search for "browser". There's a bunch listed there.

you could also install something that isn't listed, such as PaleMoon, on your own.

Re: NOOB question - How do I change from Cinnamon to XFCE?

If you haven't really done much yet, a fresh install may be a better choice. However, if you want, you can install the xfce desktop on a sytem where you originally installed cinnamon. I did it, and it works fine. The version of xfce that you get is the "standard" version, with the blue xfce color sc...

Re: Making XFCE Mint Edition look closer to the "standard" X

I installed mint cinnamon and then later installed xfce via the software manager. the version of xfce that was installed was the standard-looking version, not the "minty" looking version.

Re: Buying smart devices is dumb!

a lot of smart devices are running Android and are never receiving updates to fix security issues. And unfortunately, some of those "devices" are cars. That's scarier to me. If you buy a smart toaster that gets compromised, that's your problem. If someone hacks into your car while you're one the hi...

Re: Something is filling up root partition

post the tail of the bigger logs. Otherwise we don't know what is wrong with your system. Sorry but I don't know that command. open a terminal window and simply type: tail /var/log/<name of log> It will just display the last 10 lines of that file in the terminal. Then you can copy and paste them he...

Re: Kind of a dumb question about hardware drivers

Depending on how thoroughly you've tested in the Live environment, you could still run into unexpected issues. I encountered one when I installed LM 17.3 XFCE on an old PC. It worked in the live environment, but when I installed it and it would go into a suspended mode overnight, I couldn't wake it ...

Re: Network Icon not showing in task

I just realized that your post stated that you installed cinnamon, but your system info indicates xfce. If you are using Cinnamon, my previous post is not useful, and you should completely ignore it.

Re: Network Icon not showing in task

I'm running 17.3 XFCE, and to get the network indicator to show on mine I go to: menu -> settings -> panels on the panels window that opens, select the appropriate panel in your drop down list (most likely, "panel 1") Select the "Items" tab for that panel In the list of items, I have an "Indicators ...

there is one installed by default in mint, called ufw. it is not enabled by default though. I think there us a separate GUI for it called gufw that you can install on your own.

For the terminal opacity, open the terminal and go to Edit -> Preferences and click on the Appearance tab.

Being able to see through the terminal window drives me nuts as well.
