Re: intro w/ questions

1. You need to get onto the Linux Mint IRC channel to get a registration code.

2. I don't think there is a beta version.

Re: I cannot convince my family to use Linux

With my kids, I'd tell them they aren't allowed to touch my linux machines. Nothing would make it more attractive to them than being told it was forbidden :D

Re: Samba for beginners.

When you say you need to 'access' your wife's computer, do you mean you just want to access files on her machine, or you need access that allows you to make changes to her system?

Also, are these all mint/linux machines, or are some of them Win/Mac?

Re: `apt-get upgrade` safe?

Mint is built off of Ubuntu, so it uses quite a few Ubuntu repositories. So, sometimes when Ubuntu updates their code, it trickles down to Mint.

Re: XFCE 17.3 and internet performance issues

I was having performance issues with FireFox on XFCE 17.3. I don't remember for sure whether or not they started after I upgraded or not though. I somewhat recently switched from FF to PaleMoon and that browser is running fine. Honestly, I attributed it more to problems with FireFox than with Mint o...

Re: Best Linux distro to start on my needs (Im newbie)

As far as the Arduino stuff goes, I've been coding various Arduinos and Arduino clones on mint for a couple of years now, and it works fine. I've used the Arduino IDE on cinnamon and XFCE (both version 17 and higher), neither DE had any problems. The one thing to note is that the Mint repositories o...

Re: Hello, I'm hat_man and I'm a PC-aholic

to continue with your truck analogy... take one for a test drive. load one of the various Mint ISOs on a USB stick and try it out. You don't even have to install it, you can just run a live session and see if you like it. If you don't, or if it is just a little too slow, try a different ISO for one ...

reverting to a previous version of a driver is outside of my area of expertise. I'll let someone else with a little more experience handle that part of your question.

In your update manager, you can see a list of previous updates. It is under the View menu -> History of Updates

There is a sticky post under the "installation & boot" sub-forum. I start there and ask specific questions as you need to.

Re: Help Changing Border color (17.3 Rosa)

I think themese is where you need to look. I use the "crux" window boarder theme, and half of my window boarder is green and fades into a gray boarder on the other side. If the themes that come pre-installed don't do what are looking for, you should be able install a theme that will do what you are ...

Re: Help for install a theme

I think themes reside in a hidden folder in your home directory

if you type this into the terminal, I think you should see a list of themes that match the list of themes in the UI:

ls ~/.themes

Re: How do I switch from Cinnamon to XFCE?

When you say you don't see xfce4, are you in Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager? I was using Software Manager. If I search for "xfce", it is the very first result returned.

I'm pretty sure I just installed xfce4. When I look in there now, there are a bunch of other xfce packages installed, but that is all the stuff Software Manager pulled in for me.

Re: How do I switch from Cinnamon to XFCE?

I recently did this same thing. I originally installed Cinnamon, and then later installed XFCE as well. It was pretty easy. I just went into Software Manager and installed xfce4. Now, when I log in, there is a little 2 letter code in the top right of my login window. If I click on it, there is a lit...
