Re: How do I Move from HDD to SSD "Copy Paste" Install Mint 17.3

Hi apemanx, I've done the same thing with my laptop a few weeks ago. If you're comfortable with clonezilla, I'd use that. Plug both hard drives into the same machine, boot it with clonezilla, and clone the one disk to the other. I'm assuming the new disk is at least the same size as the old one? If ...

Re: Copying HDD over ethernet [solved]

Thanks all for the help!

I think I'll give the netcat option a go, and if that fails I'll just give in and get the adaptor.

Cheers folks, I'll close this off now :-)

Copying HDD over ethernet [solved]

Hi folks, I've recently bought a spiffy new SSD to replace my laptop's dying HDD. I'd like to image my 500GB HDD onto my blank new SSD. Since my laptop only has 1 SATA connector, I'll have to use 2 laptops booted with live USBs to do so. But does anyone know how I could do this? I'm using a wired co...

SSH in live iso?

Hey folks, I've recently acquired a bargain SSD for my laptop and I'm looking to migrate the data on my failing HDD onto the spiffy new SSD (500 vs 480GB, but I've got loads of free space). Only thing is, my laptop has 1 SATA connector (no DVD drive). So, I'm thinking of using 2 laptops to copy the ...

System-wide ad-blocking

So I've been wondering if I can block ads on a system-wide scale (my internet is sooo slooow). I recently read about the wonders of a good /etc/hosts file, which sends all the ad domains to 0.0.0.0. However, they noted that this will not help against ads that direct you directly to an IP, because th...

Re: Document versioning?

How about this: Code: Select all cp /USB/Uni/thesis/current/thesis.docx /USB/Uni/thesis/versions/`date +%y%m%d-%H%M`-thesis.docx Note that those are backticks, not apostrophes, around the 'date' command. Backticks mean "execute this command, and substitute the output here". Thanks very much LinuxJi...

Document versioning? {Solved}

Hey folks, I'm writing my thesis at the moment (pure, unadulterated fun, I assure you) and am absolutely paranoid about backing it up because I don't want to try and re-write it. I've got a script that syncs files between my USB, HDD, SD Card, and portable HDD (told you I was paranoid). What I'd lik...

Re: Two names for the same drive

Let's everyone just calm down. Let's not derail the thread with a flame war.

Does anyone know anything about symlinks? I don't know much about them, but it sounds like that could be an easy fix -- just link one mount point to the other, and all set! Thoughts?

Re: Protect each OS in dual boot

I think I have told Mint to not mount the windows partitions but will check this is still correct when I next log on there. The best solution for that is srs5694's, particularly his "noauto" idea (highlighted in below quote). You can greatly reduce such risks by mounting a filesystem read-only. Thi...

Re: {Solved}Tips for migrating machine?

Well, I guess I'm late to your party... but for future reference, there are a couple of tips to migrate from 17.2 to 17.3 Thanks austin.texas! I thought there *must* have been a quick console solution out there! I was using a gui program called Aptik that copied my PPAs and list of installed softwa...

Re: sound takes too long to load up

Hi reyes, I'm not technical enough to be of much help, but it'll make it easier for those who can help you if you give more info about: 1. Whether you've installed Mint to your hard drive, or are just running it off a usb stick 2. the output of inxi -Fxz entered into a terminal (fetches a whole bunc...

Has anyone had much experience with Mupen -- particularly, can anyone recommend a decent graphical front-end? M64py doesn't seem to work for me.

Re: Privacy in Linux Mint

What is privacy like in Linux Mint? Does it have NSA and CIA backdoors, like they do in Windows? I don't mean to sound like a wise... buttocks..., but if the NSA and CIA had placed backdoors into Linux Mint, would you truly expect to have this confirmed here? I mean, it seems sort of unlikely that ...

Re: I'm looking for AGC (Automatic Gain Control) for my spea

I try to be a realist so I'm looking for a solution in code. I know how to design this in hardware and would be overjoyed to assist if someone wanted to write the code. It exists for microphone input, it could exist for speaker output. You could always post the code you do have, and see if anyone c...
