Re: HDMI audio not working on TV
Hey, Sounds like a similar problem to what I had. When your HDMI is plugged in, try pactl set-card-profile 0 output:hdmi-stereo This re-routes your audio through the HDMI output. When you unplug it, you need to return the output to its normal place, with: pactl set-card-profile 0 output:analog-stere...

Re: Different DEs
Hey guys, Thanks for the replies! I've been meaning to try out KDE and XFCE, so I'll give them a whirl next time I feel like tinkering. I've read a bit about (as I understand it) not having a DE and using a program like fluxbox instead. Does that sound right? Has anyone tried this out, or have any c...

Different DEs
Hey folks, I've been using Cinnmon ever since I got into LM. But, I feel it's time for a change. So, I'm throwing it out there -- what are some cool DE's to try? I'm particularly interested in ones that are reasonably lightweight and functional. I believe some people just use a window manager like f...

Re: Sound from USB speaker
Xenopeek, thanks for the help. I ran your dmesg advice, but there was nothing below "marker" after I plugged the usb cable in. I've concluded the problem is hardware related after trying it on a windows rig. It seems the USB connection is there only to power the speaker's internal battery;...

Re: Sound from USB speaker
Oh, sorry. Whoops... Oh hang on. I found the problem. My speaker doesn't show up in lsusb . (The output's the same with it plugged in and with it removed). So I'm guessing that means my system's not picking it up, right? Any ideas on what the problem could be? As for speaker make/model -- I'm not su...

[Solved] Sound from USB speaker
Hi folks,
I've got a cool little usb speaker system. However, when I plug it in, it doesn't work. Does anyone know how to pipe audio output to a usb speaker?

Re: Which dirs to migrate?
Wharfrat, the way I read your post is to:
1. cd into ~ in the terminal (cd ~)
2. run that rsync command.
Is that right? I'll give it a go later on (when I'm on my lan). Thanks! I'd never thought to use rsync for this.

Re: Which dirs to migrate?
Thanks for the replies! Wharfrat, thanks for the info about /bin. Appreciate it :-) As for the "targeted" copying process, is there an automated way of doing this, or do I need to hunt around for whatever arcane directory, eg, Firefox hides its settings? Cosmo, in that thread you linked to...

All right! I may just be able to avoid "upgrading" my last Win rig to Win 10 (and its hey-let's-keep-the-os-in-the-cloud ideology).

[Solved] Which dirs to migrate?
Hi everyone, I've recently got a new laptop and want to take advantage of the bigger hdd to play around with more distros (what else?). Currently, I've installed LM 17 KDE & Cinnamon as well as Elementary (another debian-based os). That all went fine. What I'm wanting to do is to copy all of my ...

Re: Lenovo compatibility?
But: my Lenovo laptops were all X-vista based, and as such work beautifully with any Linux O/S that is installed on them. I agree. My Thinkpad X220 works amazingly well with Mint -- even the "function keys" work as they should (ie, Fn + F2 locks the screen, Fn + F3 opens battery settings ...

Re: External hard drive won't display
Your last error message is saying the system doesn't understand the exFat format. According to here , you can fix that by installing the exfat utilities: sudo apt-get install exfat-fuse exfat-utils Then, when you plug your new HDD in, it should auto-mount. If it doesn't, you can mount it manually (l...

Re: No sound on a 2nd Linux Mint 17.1 HDMI TV
Did you try pactl set-card-profile 0 output:hdmi-stereo ? I had sound troubles, but that solved it for me. Obviously, when you unplug the screen, you need to reset to computer sound: pactl set-card-profile 0 output:analog-stereo There's a script that does this at a keypress in the tutorial I linked ...

Re: Package installer default location
Hi Xenopeek,
I was wanting to move it because it would mean avoiding fiddling with my partition setup (I've got a few and I'm not super-confident with gparted).
Having said that -- yours is the simple and elegant solution, so I've adopted it. Cheers -- I'll mark the thread "resolved".

Re: External hard drive won't display
I've had a similar error before, and my solution was to move the mount point (the folder you access the drive from). Dunno if it'll work for you, but I reckon it's worth giving it a go. Now, in an earlier post, you put the output of lsblk . Based on this, we can see your USB HDD is: └─sdb1 8:17 0 93...

Re: External hard drive won't display
Hi Metrobusman, It'd be easier for us to help you if you gave us a little info about your system. For instance, if you plug your USB HDD in, what is the output of the following: inxi -F | grep "USB" ? (inxi -F gives an overview of your system, grep looks for the USB part). as well as lsblk...
