Re: Lightboost with Linux Mint 17.1 (Cinnamon)

Well, this gets more and more interesting. Now, I know nearly nothing about opengl, so feel free to take this with a pinch of salt. I've got no idea why opengl is resetting your display mode on exit. But, if you're stumped for ideas, I've got a hacky idea that might help. If it were me, I'd try maki...

niowluka wrote:NO! You do need to reverse the changes using chown, but nothing in /usr has ever been owned by you or your group.
Oh, whoops. Good catch, niowluka. Yeah, OP -- use chown to set the folders back to niowluka's example.

Re: I chown'd my /usr folder - is there a way back?

I'd probably just do the same thing, but in reverse. If your username is fred, you'd do: sudo chown -R fred /usr/ If you want to change the group back, you'll need to look that up -- say your group is "users". Then you'd type: sudo chown -R fred:users /usr/ Good luck! For more info, try man chown or...

Re: Lightboost with Linux Mint 17.1 (Cinnamon)

Oh, well that should be doable. I'm not a pro with xorg.conf, but it's a script and we can certainly put something together. I did a little googling to find this: Most of the configuration files for Xorg are stored in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ . Each file is given a unique name and ends in .conf. The fi...

[Resolved]Package installer default location

Hi folks, I'm wanting to know if it's possible (or necessary) to change where package installer installs my .deb files. I'm asking this because my Mint partition is getting a bit clogged, and I'd like to instead install to my data partition. I've found a helpful little guide about changing the insta...

Re: Lightboost with Linux Mint 17.1 (Cinnamon)

Sorry, could you give us an explanation of what light boost does? Is it a brightness or resolution thing? I'm guessing it's this ? Do you run a program on Mint to set your lightboost settings, or is it something you fiddle with on your monitor? If it's a program, we could probably dicky something up...

Re: Conky, show internet speed in megabits not megabytes

Mate, they've told you what to do. ... Take your number in Megabytes, divide by 0.125, and get the Megabits equivalent. So a 20MB/s connection would be 160Mbps. Simple, elegant, and efficient. :) ,if somendoy give mee the code i glad I don't think they will, because then you wouldn't learn anything,...

Re: USB device no onger recognized

I have not used the device for 3 or 4 months, and went to use it last week. When I plugged it in, Mint did not auto mount it like it always has. Windows did not see it either. If neither Win nor Mint sees it, that suggests to me a hardware problem. Is your problem that it isn't automounted, or that...

Re: unusual pppoe problem

I'm not familiar with your config (sounds a bit weird to me, but that's ISP's for you!), but I'd suggest trying either DSL or Ethernet options. It doesn't sound like dial-up, and it certainly isn't wifi, so it's likely to be one of the two options. Although, I stand to be corrected -- like I said, n...

Re: Porxy system wide

Looks like the answer is in one of the other posts on your page:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install gnome-control-center
Apparently that's GUI-based. Does that work for you?

I also know there's a proxy tutorial somewhere around these forums, check on the tutorials board.

Re: Swap partition on an SSD

Good idea or not? My vote's for not, especially if you've already got 20GB RAM. I doubt you'd ever need swap, unless you're trying to do something really hardcore -- like video editing on one monitor, while playing a AAA game on another, while, I dunno, running a few dedicated servers on a VM. Seri...

[Solved]Shutdown security risks

Hi folks, Not quite sure where this question goes, as it's more a security one than a newbie one -- but there's no security board to post in. Mods, if I've picked the wrong spot, my apologies. Now, I've set up ssh across a couple mint pcs on my home LAN following one of the excellent tutorials on he...

Re: Extending desktop over projector?

MagicMint, that did the trick. I can't believe that something as simple as left over padding was messing it all up! Everything works perfectly now, I'll edit this thread as solved.

Thanks very much for your excellent tutorial and excellent help.

Re: Extending desktop over projector?

Well that got me thinking -- I opened up gedit ~/.config/monitors.xml And, low and behold, there's the line: <output name="LVDS1"> So I'm thinking I should change the disprimary value to LVDS1, which I've done. I've made a hideous grep/sed command that'll fetch the name of your monitor. It is: grep ...

Re: Extending desktop over projector?

Oh, thanks MagicMint. Your tutorial works great! One small issue though -- when I unplug my TV and cycle back with the disper hotkey, cycling won't restore audio to my laptop. I think it's a problem detecting when the TV is unplugged, as pactl set-card-profile 0 output:analog-stereo fixes the proble...
