Re: "Ignored" terms in forum search

This bothered me for about "a minute" when it first happened to me, but I was a GoogleDork before the word was coined,... Likewise, for the past 16 or 17 years or so. But that doesn't affect the usefulness of this site's search feature. Why have the feature, why invest effort in it, why use whateve...

Since there are no solid contrary comments, I'm turning this into a [Solved] question.

Re: "Ignored" terms in forum search

Aaarrgghh! I just now wanted to see if there were any previous posts recommending a particular VNC server function for LM. The initial obvious search terms were [ vnc server ]. The list that came back showed a couple thousand hits, but a quick scroll down showed that only "server" was highlighted in...

Re: LM 17.1 default install... or manual partitioning?

AFAIK, most useful Firefox settings (and some others) are easy enough to preserve simply by copying appropriate files to USB or wherever. But is the issue specifically for re-installs? Or does it apply to future possible upgrades also? There are so many posts in who knows how many forums, and I real...

[Solved] LM 17.1 default install... or manual partitioning?

Installing LM17.1 on a IBM T61 laptop. If there'll be no Windows nor any need for dual-boot of any kind, is there good reason not to do the simple default install? Is there some reason I should manually set partitions other than the way the default install does it? I installed LM 17.1 on a R61 and s...

Re: Who/what are the "groups"?

Partially answering my question, I found Users and Groups Administration tool - What do the options in User Privileges tab of Advanced Settings do? Some groups are described there, including adm. Of course, it's not necessarily totally appropriate to LM 17.1, but it's some help.

Who/what are the "groups"?

In LM 17.1, I open 'Users and Groups' and click to the [Groups] tab. A few dozen "groups" are listed. How can I determine what any given "group" is for? E.g., the first one listed is adm . What's it doing on my system? It's part of the defalt install, so I assume it belongs. But with some few dozen ...

Re: LM17-64 and hwinfo?

I was pretty sure hwinfo used to be around, so it seemed good to ask after trying to understand the messages from my attempted install. All seems well now with hardinfo installed/running clean.

Thanks to all with helping clear things up and giving what seems like an excellent alternative.

[Solved] LM17-64 and hwinfo?

After loading LM17-64 onto a Lenovo R61 laptop, I started going through any issues and found that wireless wasn't working. First step was to check BIOS, and found it was the original factory version (and will probably be part of a different question thread). To be clear on what BIOS upgrade I wanted...

[Solved] Re: LM16 Reload/Re-partition/Re-what?

First, what is "Discs"? I didn't find a Google reference in a quick search. GParted looks like a useful default item I should always have handy. Discs is a Mint Utility found at Menu > Accessories > Discs Ah. "Disks" on my system. I thought it might be someone's app. Your partitions do need to be r...

Re: LM16 Reload/Re-partition/Re-what?

First, it would help to see your current partition setup. @austin.texas: sudo parted results in: wife@wife-mint-M52 ~ $ sudo parted -l [sudo] password for wife: Model: ATA WDC WD5000AAKX-0 (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 500GB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: msdos Number Start End ...

Re: LM16 Reload/Re-partition/Re-what?

If it wasn't proper to have a single partition, the installation procedure would not support it. Having a separate home is an optional feature that can be implemented using the other setup choice. In the context of upgrading LM16->LM17 and keeping user apps/data/configurations, am I misunderstandin...

Re: LM16 Reload/Re-partition/Re-what?

First, it would help to see your current partition setup. You could post a screenshot of your drive(s) as seen in Discs or Gparted. Or you can post the result of sudo parted -l @austin.texas: You're right; thank you. I'll get out of "Newbie" eventually, once I learn some appropriate behavior. First...

[Solved] LM16 Reload/Re-partition/Re-what?

Being new to Linux, I have a LM16 that probably wasn't set up properly. It's been working extremely well for many months, so I have no complaints. But it needs to be upgraded to LM17 at some point. The problem is that I'm learning that it apparently wasn't partitioned properly originally. It's insta...

First of all, next timde when you post a question, please provide us also with details of your system and/or operating system in conjunction with forum rule #5 . Ah, you're right. Re: LXDE 12 and gedit visual effects

Just a friendly reminder that Linux Mint 12 has reached end of support... All is already well understood. That old IBM T22 laptop is unable to install beyond LM12, and I wanted to get a general intro to what "LXDE" actually was. It's irrelevant ( to me ) what newer features/capabilities might be av...

[Solved] LXDE 12 menu edits

One thing I immediately missed from a different LM 12 in my first test of LXDE 12 is an 'Open as administrator...' option in various context menus. I can find a lot of 'menu edit' posts all over the internet, but it's far from clear which method applies to what "menu". Too many Linux distros, apps, ...

LXDE 12 and gedit visual effects

I installed LXDE 12 over a LM12 partition, and now I'm learning a few new details. I'll see if I can insert an image and explain my current problem. http://i1295.removed/albums/b636/vinnielttomliotta/geditFont_zps5c2a38c4.png I installed gedit and tried to use it. I had to change the main panel back...

Re: Mint 13 LiveDVD unrecognized

There is something obvious we may have missed here. Where did the Kubuntu DVD come from? Did you download and burn it to the DVD, or is this one someone gave you, or you ordered sent to you? As I've said, the Kubuntu DVD was burned with the same burner on the same PC using the same burner program, ...
