Re: Which desktop environment?

Hi, I have used Kubuntu for a number of years but have recently moved to LM Mate. So why? Well I began to find that Kubuntu (the Ubuntu version of KDE) was getting too 'busy' i.e. too many options! However KDE apps such as Krusader and Digikam are far better than what LM Mate currently has on offer ...

'dev' packages.

Hello,

I notice that I have quite a lot of packages installed which have the 'dev' tag and I wonder if such packages are surplus to requirements? I am working on the basis that development packages are for 'developers' and not the likes of me!

Any views on this - much appreciated.

Thanks.

Compiz - how to get rid?

Hi,

I am finding Compiz a waste of space and wish to get rid of it. Is it 'safe' to purge this 'eye candy' software package/s without affecting anything else?

I am asking because some packages one wishes to delete appear to be tied in with ones that are required.

Many thanks.

Re: A few questions before I get LinuxMint

Hi, My 2 pennies worth. I have just moved over from Kubuntu after 4/5 years as I have been looking for a cleaner, quicker and leaner distro. Well, tried quite a few but now settled with Mint - like the way it is supported and like Kubuntu it has a great support community. As for Libre Office - I use...

Panel 'menu' 'SOLVED'.

Hi,

Just in the process of switching to Mint from Kubuntu so playing around. :)

The answer to this probably applies to any linux system but can anyone tell me which file holds the 'menu' information? I just wish to transfer this info. easily to another Mint that I have running.

Thanks.

Have you installed a DE (KDE, Mate, Cinnamon) other than the one you started with?
Hi - no a totally clean install on a freshly partioned disc using a Linux Mint 17 MATE DVD (64 bit).

Re: Blank Screen (and more)!

While you wait for a cure I only found this was for LM 15 but it sounds like you have the same thing. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=208&t=147771 Thanks for that I'll give it a whirl and see what happens. EDIT: Well got rid of the two 'menus' not quite sure how! Deleted the two date/ti...

Blank Screen (and more)!

Hi, Sounds worse than it is however I am trying out Mint 17 having been on Kubuntu for some years now. I like the cleaner look and the faster response times but I have two little niggles: 1) After boot I get an arrow cursor but on a blank screen Sooooo I get the command line and do 'startx' and away...
