Re: Cannot get Realtek RTS525A card-reader to work

Hi, I am having the same issue but with a Genesys Logic which started with the last upgrade (I think) I know that some drivers for SD cards have changed but somewhat concerned about what to do. Have tried various links but they are a little 'out-of-date'. Like mhelvens would appreciate some help. Th...

Shotwell and 'Send-to'

Hi, Shotwell, as you may know, has a 'send-to' option for sending images via email. Shotwell uses Nautilus 'send-to' and my case defaults to Thunderbird. No problem with the Thunderbird part but I would like Shotwell to use the CAJA 'send-to'. Does anyone know how to amend the Shotwell prog. to look...

Re: Manually loaded apps. where do they go? SOLVED.

Thanks Mute Ant - printed off for my file!

Thanks too Quetzal. I did install Pale Moon via the proper procedure (I thought) but it still ended up in /Home.

Will move stuff around in due course and redo the 'paths'.

Manually loaded apps. where do they go? SOLVED.

Hi All, I have read through the manual pages on files etc. and where programmes are located but I have not made much sense of it really. So I have the following programmes installed in various locations: 'sunflower' (file manager) is in /usr/bin 'master-pdf-editor' is in /opt 'firejail & firetools (...

Re: USB issue?

Hi, All resolved. User group was added but the VB manager stated that I had a newer version of the extension pack available. This was strange as both VB and its Extensions were loaded from the Oracle web-site the day before. Anyway reloaded extensions, checked User Group was OK and away it went. Not...

USB issue? (SOLVED)

Hello, Not sure that this is in the right place as I suspect software must be an issue too but . . . I have just installed VirtualBox (thanks to help from the forum) and have Windows 10 running on it. All going very well until I tried to access the USB drives. The VB says that there are no devices c...

Re: Virtualbox ISO - how to activate?

Hi Cosm o and Habitual , Found and activated VT-x in the BIOS (Advanced Virtualization Technology - 'Enabled') so many thanks for that advice. Following on from that and going through 'New' & 'Start' in VirtualBox Manager the options for 64bit OS's appeared so now 8.1 64bit fully installed and in fa...

Re: Virtualbox ISO - how to activate?

Hello and thanks for the responses. The link to Oracle is here: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Guest_OSes It says that Windows 8.0 both 32 and 64 runs but with the 'Additions'. It aslo says that VT-x/AMD-V acceleration is required too. This was reported as an error when I began the 'Start' procedur...

Virtualbox ISO - how to activate? (SOLVED)

Hi, I want to get VB runing so that I can access some windows stuff (via 8.1 with subsequent free upgrade to 10). According to the Oracle web-site 8.1 will work but with 'additions' as it is the 64bit version (like my machine). So I have the ISO but cannot find out how to go about installing from it...

Just because of this is it not? Hence package mananger 'downgrading' as you must have used a ppa for version 1.7 :?:

Re: Using firejail as security sandbox for your programs

Hi, Just out of interest I installed firejail and firetools and everything started up first time no problem. However 2nd time around neither Firefox nor Thunderbird would start. No problems with Pale Moon and other items which appeared by default in the firetools 'menu'. Thanks to the tutorials prod...

Re: Shotwell vs Digikam

Thanks phd21, I have since ditched Shotwell. I did not find 'nautilus-send to' any use and my 'non-computer' lady is used to Digikam (so what else could I do? ) As you say 'high quality KDE programs'. I have Okular loaded now too as that is the best for pdf work that I have found ad nothing o...

Shotwell vs Digikam (SOLVED)

Hello (& happy Xmas to those who celebrate it!). This is not a major problem hence why I have posted here. I am aware that many desktops, some say, should be kept 'clean' and not mixed up with applications custom-made for other desktops. My example here is Digikam (kde) and Shotwell (Gnome). I use D...

Re: Best Search Engine ?

Hi, I have been trying a few of late and also different web browsers. (See Firefox! in this forum.) Settled with Pale Moon and 'Start Page' but about to try out Ixquick which is the same as Start Page but uses multiple engines rather than just Google. Either way you can play around to your heart's c...

Re: Firefox!

Unless it is an intermittent problem and caused by the Mint website being slow at times, you may try this setting under about:config (The setting layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled, default true , has been introduced by Firefox 33 and has been known not to bring joy everywhere.) Thanks kariche...

Re: Firefox!

Sorry, but Firefox is perfect as always. So it may be a problem with your system or it is really you : ) Habitual, what do you mean by "compressed layouts"? If you mean the look and feel, you can install Classic Theme Restorer. Hah - nothing is perfect - although 'Lord of the Rings' gets close. Any...

Firefox!

Hi, Is it me or is Firefox getting 'clunky'? I do not have many 'add-ons' but the start page loads in chunks nothing else does this. I have tried Opera and some rather obscure web-browsers and reckon they should stay that way. (No disrespect to the programmers.) Currently trying out the fork of Fire...

Re: Updating Grub after 'Rosa'.

So updating via the Update Manager didn't do a full upgrade? I know I had to install the updated kernel separately, but I thought the rest of the files/upgrades were installed. It looks like it. As I mentioned Synaptic holds back various updates and they usually vanish with an an upgrade. In this i...

Re: Updating Grub after 'Rosa'. (Solved)

Hello Cosmo & oba 123, I have got it fixed. I just ran sudo apt-get update then 'upgrade' then 'dist-upgrade'. This forced the grub updates which were being heldback (plus quite a few other upgrades). Both disks now showing 'Rosa'. Many thanks. :) Regarding question re upgrade I assume that you mean...
