Re: .comments...what function does this file fill?

A bit more context would be helpful, but one possibility if it's a folder with images and you've viewed that folder with Mint's Pix application the xml files contain the Pix specific metadata for each image in the folder.

Re: Kernel updates - a gentle moan!

My gentle moan is that rightly or wrongly, I'm getting the impression that there's a kernel update almost every week! Seems much more frequent than was the case a year or two ago. Am I wrong? I'm making - and then deleting - system backups as often as I change my socks (!!). I know it's optional an...

Re: Intel i5-8400 with turbo boost technology?

My question is the following: is this turbo boost technology going to be fully supported by Linux Mint 19.3? the OS and the VirtualBox also? It's built-in to the CPU or chipset so the operating environment has nothing to do with it. That's not entirely true - out of the box Linux will use the p-sta...

Re: How is a website detecting my previous visits with....

At least that is the only explanation I can come up with that would explain the disparity. Y'all can't be lying. Nope it's a simple explanation - if your on Mint, and use use the default Firefox provided with Mint (which is repackaged by the Mint team) it has Yahoo search and no Google, as Yahoo wi...

Re: Corona virus (COVID-19)

Well, the Dutch Prime Minister has just addressed the nation. The official Dutch policy is now, that we all get infected but in a slowed-down, controlled way. In order to build a "wall of immunity" around the old and weak, and in order to spread the load for our hospitals and ICU's. So no total loc...

Re: Why isn't certain software in the Software Manager?

so i should rather ask Vivaldi why they don't have it in the software center? is this ubuntu system inferior to arch's AUR? and what about this PPA system, is that a good model to have? Ubuntu' repos are mostly derived from upstream Debian. Debian have relatively strict criteria (in terms of licens...

Re: avoid leaking user wallpaper on lightdm lock screen

This is the modify and recompile mate-screensaver method to revert to the lockscreen always using the default system background. 1) Open Software Sources Application via the menu - Check Source Code repositories Open a terminal and 2) Make and enter a working directory mkdir -p $HOME/mate-screensave...

Re: avoid leaking user wallpaper on lightdm lock screen

Hi - so here is the background script method. 1) Make your local bin directory mkdir -p ~/.local/bin 2) Write the script file. This is a single copy and paste command into the terminal. tee ~/.local/bin/mate_lock_background.sh <<'EOB' #!/bin/bash # Script to set a custom background for the MATE lock...

Re: Nemo GUI acts strange when renaming files

Thanks - the lack of output of the second command is a good thing - no issues to correct there.

So I reset my nemo settings and loaded yours - still no dice and can't reproduce the issue you describe after renaming in compact view. I'm at a loss to be honest.

Re: Update Manager not working and Shield Tray Icon gone

Hi, It's no problem that's what the forums are for. The problem seems to be that someone you have ended up with the Mint 19.3 Tricia repo active and the Mint 19.3 version of update manager, but none of the other Mint 19.3 versions of packages some of which are needed for that version of update manag...

Well you could just revert that commit. Prior to the commit the lock screen always showed the system default wallpaper rather than the current user wallpaper.

That works but is it possible to avoid opening a Terminal?
It's a basic troubleshooting step and whatever error message I suspect you'll get might help.

Anyway if it works on Kubuntu, but not Mint, I suspect you are missing some QT dependencies on Mint.

Re: avoid leaking user wallpaper on lightdm lock screen

No worries - no offense taken, I researched this quite a lot for Cinnamon (which has no native screensaver as such - out of the box the lockcscreen and screensaver both just show the user background) and short of forking mate screensaver and coding it yourself I'm pretty sure the dbus watching metho...

Re: Can you Provide Connectivity APK B/W Laptop and Android

There's loads of Android File Explorer's that provide FTP or SFTP servers on the phone that you can connect to via WIFI from your File Manager on any Linux.

Solid Explorer is my preference.
