Re: New Computer

If Windows 10 is installed, make sure Fast Start is turned off in Windows, then connect the USB drive, reboot and access the UEFI. From there it should just be a matter of setting the UEFI boot order to boot from the Live/Installer USB drive, reboot and watch the installer come up. At worst, it may...

Re: Yet another "How do I mount..." question

For a new user both utilities are useful. If somebody ask how to perform disk management, I refer them the disks utility, because it is more useful for a new user. Most newer users are from the Windows or MAC world, and they are accustom to using a graphical user interface. Personally, I use the fd...

Re: MInt and AMD: The desktop freezes almost within 15 seconds

The desktop freezes almost within 15 seconds after boot up in the latest Kernel 5.0. The mouse cursor can be moved around but can't click into anywhere. Kernel 5.0 is NOT the latest kernel and is not supported here anyway. Upstream stable is on 5.1.5 but is still not supported here, consider it exp...

Re: trouble with hardwaredriver

Did you install it? Does your computer work with it booted? Linux Mint and most other Linux flavours handle most of the hardware via the kernel and some additional utilities without needing additional drivers in the old windows sense. Sometimes one does need to (or just prefer to) download and insta...

Re: Booting time

I don't think its that bad of a question. Maybe it would have been better to ask, "compared to windos10 or mac OS does LM tend to take longer or shorter time?". Of course the answer would be "depends".

No not really. The wine hacks don't work very well. You'll have to fiddle quite a bit. . Thats the big pull to stick with MS crap. Open source folks use the free Libra office versions

Also beware that some USB cables are inferior and will cause errors. Get a good one and swap if you can't get connected at first

Re: Help! Printer Errors!

Hello Jasper, Looks like you are using LM19.x? You can use the command in terminal cat /etc/os-release . I assume you will be using the standard kernel for that OS version but you can type uname -r . Make sure you are all up to date. First off, make sure your printer works while connecting directly ...

Re: External Display Not detecting input.

There's a fix for that. There are options within LM to work with multiple displays. sounds like you want to 'mirror' your laptop display. This is how I do it on my laptos. Rather than re-write please follow this link and give it a try. If it doesn't work, post again https://www.techwalla.com/article...

I am a lot better at ms office apps than libra so I do prefer office but thats a separate thing.
If you don't mind Chinese closed-source software then take a look at https://www.wps.com/office/linux/, you'll feel right at home.
Thanks! I'll check it out

It sounds smarter to say "bash scripting" rather than "command line", and no, you don't need to know a whole lot. Learn how to copy/paste and be careful of 'sudo'.
Problem with that is that "Bash" isn't the only command line shell we use...

Re: What use is learning the command line for someone new to Linux?

I I can see how people like administrators and programmers are likely to get a lot of use out of it, but what about the "average" computer user? I'm a bit long in the tooth for learning new tricks and find it quite a challenge to get my head around a lot of the command line jargon used in Linux. Bu...

Re: "Linux Mint Turns Cinnamon Experience Bittersweet"

I was rather suprised by his blog complaining about cinnamon and libraoffice performance in 19.1. I felt 19.0 was mostly an upgrade from 17.3 and that 19.1 was far better than 19.0. Definitely better and snappier. Perhaps gm10's comments are appropriate in my case in that with decent memory, mb, dis...

Re: Help connecting to Win7 share

Its not an entirely simple problem. You need to learn a little about microsofts workgroup vs homegroup https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17145/windows-homegroup-from-start-to-finish One can then use samba to join a homegroup or workgroup. But its still not great. I like to set IP's static via...

Re: Virus protection question

I'll second and third Catweazle but to make a point: One thing that makes linux especially more secure is that one is not normally working with admin/root privileges. That locks out a lot of malware as such cant change or write to system files. Surfing in general can't do much to your system but cou...

Re: heck, LM isn't a bad disc recovery or network manager OS

The other cool thing is now that folks have had access to LM , they like it a lot and wonder why more of our computers aren't using it. The replacement computer then auto-updated to win10 thereby killing the main program to control the cytoflex. I had to re-install. Had to tell folks that there is n...

heck, LM isn't a bad disc recovery or network manager OS

A cheapo lenovo think m-mseries compact computer running a Beckman Coulter cytoflex FCS instrument had a fart and wouldn't boot into win7. "OMG our data is lost!!" They came and replaced it but said the little pos was dead, hard drive corrupted, no boot sector, you lost your data. Bios test did show...

Re: Networking in 'Live USB' 19.1 session

So it turns out that I did need samba installed. Its not in the LM19.1 iso. I tried, however, I was not able to install it in a live usb lm19.1 session. Guess thats how it is. would be nice if that info was here but not. I was able to borrow a usb 2TB drive and set an over night data backup of 300gb...
