guidance on support requests....lessons learned...recently

Hey. I think I have an observation about how to make an effective tech support request in these LM forums and more appropriately, how to not get usable help. It seems to me that the best way to get help here is to keep it simple, direct, short, clear; Don't post too much output from inxi, hwinfo, bl...

Re: How to get LM to see rebooted external eSATA drive?

Thanks deepakdeshp . Setting hdparm -B to 255 (disable APM) while also auto mounting via fstab entry seems to help. My last q was just how to make that perm even after reboot. Seems one must edit etc/ hdparm.config which is not talked about in those links. I think this is a little too obscure for th...

Re: Virus???

heh. Your browser can still certainly get hijacked. Still have to be smart about stuff. But no, doesn't sound like a virus. Linux does have some vulnerabilities mostly having to do with managing servers, web pages, email, database stuff. Your web browser can be compromised tho. But one wonderful thi...

Re: REQUEST ASSISTANCE: Upgrade from 17.3 to 18 Failed Halfway Through

Your trying to straddle two different, distinct, platform builds...LM 17.xx is ubuntu based "trusty" platform, whereas LM18.xx is ubuntu based "xenial" platform...upgrading within the same builds (such as 17, 17,1, 17.2, 17.3 is generally not a problem, but trying to upgrade between totally differe...

Re: REQUEST ASSISTANCE: Upgrade from 17.3 to 18 Failed Halfway Through

No, mintupgrade surely isn't supposed to tear all that stuff out, is it? ya, it is... upgrading will involve a lot of deleting of existing files and installing a bunch of new ones. Thats part of the normal process. Not sure why that bugs you. Also upgrading an OS is not something to be done when ti...

Re: "System Info" utility very limited in Mint 19. No "Hardware Manager"?

Ha, ha, that is exactly what I do. I have a huge text file with all sorts of commands and annotations about switches, syntax, etc. Sometimes I cannot remember the command at all and have to spend time looking for something to jog my memory. A GUI with switches, options, menus, etc. is so much more ...

[solve]after updating errors "no system tray detected..." others

Hello. Just did an update on my LM19.1 cinnamon system, checked all except headers for dev for 4.15.x (I have 4.18.0..) and booted. Now I don't see the update manager icon on the right of the bar I get an error automatically displayed "No system tray detected on this system, unable to start, exiting...

Re: How to get LM to see rebooted external eSATA drive?

Hello deepakdeshp. There doesn't seem to be any jumpers or settings to disable sleep for the box, nothing in the manual I can see. I just sent yet another email to startech to ask. Its weird that the only way to wake it up appears to be to hardboot the computer system. Just not getting the irq (or s...

Re: How to get LM to see rebooted external eSATA drive?

I found gnome-disk or just 'disk' in my toolbox and used that to make the correct fstab entry to auto mount and be visible. Nice! Unfortunately when this startech external HDD esata goes to sleep it can't be reached through Nemo even if the entry stays. I get generic errors stating something is wron...

Re: How to get LM to see rebooted external eSATA drive?

continuing (this conversation with myself..) while I take a break from killing shrubbery.... I found this: [url]https://www.binarytides.com/ubuntu-automatically-mount-partition-startup/[/url looks like /etc/ fastab file is where to edit to auto mount. True? It has the following example line: 100GB /...

How to get LM to see rebooted external eSATA drive?

Hello, I have a pesky external eSATA III external box (2x drive in RAID1 mode) that keeps going to sleep. I'm working on that bit. My question here is, how do I get LM 19.1 cinnamon to see it once I've woken it up again? I can pull the plug or just hit the on and off button but LM just won't reconne...

Re: Hard Disk Health

Thanks catweazel for the reminder. Not sure why its not part of the base LM install. Was in my Manjuro. I tried installing the gui front end via LM cinnamon software manager but it totally barfed and hung. Had to kill-9 the software manager. Not to hijack the thread...

Re: Timeshift broke ever since upgrading from 19 to 19.1

What do you mean by a busted timeshift? What is the behaviour you are seeing? What is it not doing that you want it to do? Its fully functional in 19.1. I upgraded to 19.1 as well from 19.0 and Timeshift is working fine for me. I'd just reset your settings, destination location, frequency etc. Then ...

loosing external SATA/eSATA RAID box

Thought I had this solved per previous post but nope. I keep loosing an Startech external RAID mode 1 box connected via SATA. Its a 2 x 1-TB 6Gbps disc setup using ext4. Using new-ish 6Gbps cables, on SATA board port 4 to an output chassis SATA port to the box. Sometimes I can get it to come up by r...

Re: I wanted to love Mint but....

I've been using Nemo since 2015 I think. Now on multiple computers in my house and at work. No bugs or freezing encountered here. Perhaps thats the issue. If you are the only one experiencing a problem (No its not "wide spread"), not much motivation to find a fix. I did have to learn a bit about Sam...
