Re: blueman not working

Which version of linux mint are you running? More specifically, which desktop? Cinnamon, Xfce, MATE? You sholudn't have to download anything. Now days bluetooth support comes with your particular LM desktop. Same for Ubuntu. In fact, if you try to use the wrong bluetooth support for your desktop (bl...

Re: heck, LM isn't a bad disc recovery or network manager OS

in the next version of win-10, there will supposedly be more control over those updates. it also depends on whether you are running Home or Pro - on those machines. - you can get some type of control by using either: - - Group Policy - the Registry https://www.windowscentral.com/how-stop-...

Re: I can't cut, copy, delete, or create any file or folder in my all three partitions

Sh Ge, That screen shot shows you have two additional 'drives' mounted but is not at all as informative as using the commands in a terminal window I posted above. Are you saying that you cannot write to those two additional drives? If so, please post the output of those two commands above. If not......

Re: I don't understand: what is a VPN? Do I need it? Will it work on Mint?

Thank you!! It is a laptop. I have done banking on free wifi, but not for ages. Yes, I use the free wifi when I stay in hotels. It's free and often there is no other network available. I'd like to be able to use the laptop for work, but would not do that often. I do need to use it for online bankin...

Re: Please help me reinstall Windows

My consent was pretty much telling him to get my laptop working and I ended up getting it back with Linux. The 4 hours I spent last night was pretty much downloading an install for windows 8 onto a USB drive from a computer that already has windows. But where I keep getting stuck is getting my lapt...

Re: What printer should I get?

I used to swear by HP, but that changed to swear AT HP, mostly because of the cost of maintaining ink supplies, especially when not using a printer too often. I bet you used inkjets before. When you don't print often, that's not the best choice. You win the bet :D I've mostly given up for home prin...

Re: AMD processor

There shouldn't be any problems with connecting USB 2 devices to a USB 3 port. What problems are you having? https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=295024&p=1640560&hilit=slow+boot#p1640560 It was a very slow boot with the boot process looking for usb2 devices thousands of times each boo...

...use flatpacks for those I'm curious how this applies to Flatpaks. Worried about a vulnerability not likely to be encountered unless one installs from unofficial PPAs. This is one way to mitigate as flatpacks are somewhat sandboxed but not entirely of course. https://itsfoss.com/flatpak-guide/ It...

Re: Is Linux beyond me?

Other than games (and two bits of propitiatory software the family uses) probably 80% of my PC time is now on Mint and i could not be happier that it was actually Microsoft being jerks (Windows 8 and 10) that pushed me to discover such a great Linux. I hope you try it out and find yourself four yea...

Re: new to AMD and linux, need help! hardware drivers wont install!!

So exactly what isn't working?? You don't need proprietary drivers. AMD-GPU in the kernel is actually faster for gaming etc for most. Also, any time you post this sort of question you need to let all know more about exactly what your computer hardware is and what your OS is (LM17.3, LM18.x, LM19.1) ...

Re: To disable or not to disable Hyper Threading? That's the question.

you will see a slowdown on high cpu applications like games, video editing etc. I would just not worry about it, don't visit dodgy sites, don't download from un-verified repositories/ppa or use flatpacks for those

Re: Linux Mint 17.3 needs an upgrade...

Unless you have specific hardware needs, there is no reason not to go directly to to mint 19.1 which will require a clean install. Its such a huge improvement no matter the desktop I'd go for it for sure. If you need a little transition period, you can learn to setup and install a dual boot, thereby...

Re: Standard user or Admininstrator?

Also, the main worry, If I set an internal backup drive to Administrator access only, can I access them from a different computer? The files won't be encrypted on the internal drives. From a different computer? You'd have to set up network shares to access from outside the computer. Nothing to do w...

Go easy please - this might seem like a really stoopid post to most of you.......... and opens a can of wriggly worms for me. -So which changes in Administrator affect all users? For instance, I can't make a directory in another User's Home folder (or is that just me?) as an Administrator, neither ...

Re: Permissions

If you are going to spend time with any linux version, it is worth your while to learn a little about file permissions. It is fundamental. One can get discouraged so don't try to dive too deep too quick but do a bit of web reading on the basics, good enough for most. Just learn a little about handli...

Re: Booting time

I don't think its that bad of a question. Maybe it would have been better to ask, "compared to windos10 or mac OS does LM tend to take longer or shorter time?". Of course the answer would be "depends". I don't have any experience with Mac OS, so I can't speak about that. I've found that Windows 10 ...

Re: Cheap Laptop Suggestions

One can often obtain a perfectly good laptop only a few years old at used computer stores. I collect em and install linux for myself and others. Don't ever expect helpdesk help tho, even with a brand new one unless you buy their premium service agreements. Thats how it goes
