...with the exception of printing. I thought it would be a pain, and itis. Once I got the darn thing (printer) hooked up to wifi, nothing I do can cause it to print. I've tried from control center, I've tried from cups localhost. Nothing. The printer seeems to have a password and require a workgrou...

Intermittent password prompt when browsing encrypted /home

Greetings, I've been running Mint 17 Cinnamon (now on 17.2) for just over a year with an encrypted /home partition, and up until recently I've had no issues. However, now I'm finding on irregular occasions when browsing /home folders using Nemo that I get a message "The folder contents could not be ...

Re: Grive problem (Mint Cinammon)

"Good news everyone!" Grive2 - a fixed fork of Grive - has been released, and will work happily with Grive Tools. Just installed it this morning and no problems so far! http://www.webupd8.org/2015/05/grive2-grive-fork-with-google-drive.html Note: If you've installed the old version of Grive with Gri...

Re: How to fix LibreOffice PPA not installing newer versions

I think two LO 5.0s on the same machine is probably overkill  so now I need to decide which one to get rid of. I figure if I want the DEB version I do a sudo apt-get remove libreoffice , and if I want to keep the PPA version I use GDebi Package Installer on each unpacked DEB file to uninst...

Re: How to fix LibreOffice PPA not installing newer versions

Well here's a thing! Somehow I've managed to get two instances of LO 5.0 installed - the PPA version which has the monochrome toolbar buttons that I had from LO 4, and the DEB version with colourful buttons and a "Check for Updates" menu option that I haven't seen since running OpenOffice under Wind...

Re: How to fix LibreOffice PPA not installing newer versions

Thanks xenopeek for these instructions - looks good! I had tried (after initially getting slightly put off by the warning when I installed the PPA) to just download the .deb packages off the LibreOffice site and installing those, but for some reason I still had LO 4.4.3 running and even (trying) to ...

Re: Swap missing / encryption

Hello Drygar - You are correct, there is a bug in the installer that has been around for quite some time. There is a fix, and it's fairly simple. Open the Terminal and enter " sudo gedit /etc/crypttab ", then examine the line that's used for the swap partition. Notice at the beginning there is the ...

Re: Frequent updating

I have noticed a truckload of Mint-related updates coming out in the last week after I upgraded from 17.1 to 17.2... ... not that I consider it a problem or anything as I don't have to reboot after every update like Windows does. Just slightly unusual to see a bit more stuff than usual coming down t...

Re: Any Gimp gurus here? Gimp is stuck..

Does this happen in a new image, or just one you've opened?

Whenever I've found I can't edit anything in GIMP it's usually due to be doing some sort of selection in the image which I forgot about - try Ctrl-Shift-a to deselect everything.

After upgrading to 17.2, I found that although I was booting into 17.2 GRUB reckoned I only had 17.1. sudo update-grub fixed that problem as well.

Re: Linux Wins Another Convert

I wonder how many blokes start with FOSS before they move to Linux, as you did? For example, FireFox is open-source and used by a lot of Windows-ers. Other things like Liber/Open Office I don't suppose are used much in the Windows world, but maybe I'm wrong. Count me as someone who started with "Wi...

Re: How safe is it to edit files on Windows partition in Lin

I'll add my voice to those advocating a separate shared-data partition. [...] Whether you use FAT or NTFS, though, using a separate partition and configuring Linux to not mount the main Windows installation will help minimize risks. So in order to use this shared partition to move files from Window...

Re: How safe is it to edit files on Windows partition in Lin

I believe it's perfectly safe to copy files from Linux into Windows. I've been merrily writing stuff to and from my Windows Vista partition from Linux 17.1 and haven't experienced any problems. Similarly, running a defragger on Windows won't affect your Linux partitions, mostly because as far as Win...

I've noticed the same thing today with Grive Tools not synching. Shameless plug here for the space trading / combat game Oolite (http://www.oolite.org/): Among the seven trillion people who are - at least officially - Cooperative citizens, you are nobody. Re: Encrypt my home folder on install- good or bad idea?

your data gets lost forever As long as you keep your password and your encryption mount passphrase you can recover your files even if you can't login to your system. Run the command ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase on the terminal after logging in to get that. Run it without sudo! As long as you can logi...

Re: Wanted: Linux success stories

Well it all started with my installing Mint 17 Qiana on my home PC because I could see the writing on the wall for Windows Vista and didn't like the look of Windows 8. Then my wife - who had been seeing all the PC trouble I wasn't having compared to her - on Christmas Eve decided to give Linux Mint ...

Thanks - that did it.
