What if all the folks who write software decide to just make up their own rules and typed up their code any way they felt like it?
Isn't that what Billy and his mates did? (I'm looking at you Mr Gates. :D)

Re: Is Social Media a Useful Form of Communication or Just Another Time-Wasting Fad?

I've found faceache useful for keeping up with friends and family all across the world. Like any other medium (forums included) it all depends upon the use you put it to and your discipline. I generally spend more time here, than I do on Facebook, so, to me, Linux Mint Forums are a huge "time w...

Re: Linux Files

Think of Linux like you do an unfamiliar motor car. You know it's capable of certain tasks it's just a matter of finding the right buttons to push. The problem with Windows "standards" is that they are not actually "standard". Even M$ Orifice has numerous "undocumented"...

Mint 20 & HPLIP

My printer is an Hp1312nfi which is connected to my network. I think I had it printing properly after the upgrade to mint 20 but cannot be certain of that (shows how often I print stuff). It was scanning properly, that I do know. I tried to print a two page report and ended up with pages of gibberis...

Could you possibly try setting the default to writer and then try setting it back to text editor again?

Re: Why Google and Facebook should pay ?

I THINK! Note this is only MY THOUGHTS! Journalism as a craft, and career, I'd venture, is going the way of the Dodo. Whether this is a good thing, or a bad thing, only time will tell. I'd suggest that, in future, the only "facts" in any news story will be those in the mind of the author. ...

Re: Daddy tech support

I used to be tech support for my tribe, however, I taught them to learn for themselves. Time they hit high school, the teachers were asking them to support them. Now they are way ahead of anything I ever learnt. Heck one of them now works for the Uni that he attended and dropped out of because he wa...

Re: Dog pics

Lovely doggie pics. We haven't had a pet pooch for about 16 years. Rusty was a stray that wandered into our yard one day, he looked like a nice animal but scrawny and riddled with ticks (i think he was probably a camp dog). Anyway we fed him, got rid of the ticks, and he made his home with us for th...

Re: Grammar Pet Peeve

I think a lot of errors like that are a person's reliance on a spellchecker and not proofreading the final product. I catch little things like that all the time. Agreed. I detest poor spelling and grammar, especially those (whose native language is English) who cannot determine the difference betwe...

Re: download images from iphone

I'm going to be even more bloody minded. If you want to take a photo don't use a bit of fruit!!!! I wasted 2 days trying to convince my late wife's iPhone to talk to my computer, even went as far as trying it with Wingewoes, I gave up in the end.

Re: Wiping laptop to install Linux Mint but saving Windows recovery partition

Would it not be simpler just to unplug that 50Gb SSD and upgrade to a larger one? You could then just leave Wingewoes well enough alone and run Linux until you want to pass it on. Then put the wingewoes drive back in,and be restored to today!

Re: Why, Why, Why are there still people out there who fail to BACK UP?

I learnt early on the rules of backup. I was transferring data to a new computer (back in the days of DOS). No network in my section at work back then. So it was copy to floppy and put it in the next machine. To keep track of what I was copying I'd delete the file when it was up on the new machine. ...

I don't remember the first web site I ever saw. I used AOL for a few days in about 1993 so I could find a real ISP so it was probably whatever AOL had for a start page. I do remember AltaVista was the only good search engine back then.
Ditto!

Re: Libre Office - How to turn off font color

I'd suggest that there is nothing wrong with the question, I'd suspect that there may not be an answer to it. Once you change a font colour, it stays changed until you change it again. I've not ever come across a way to toggle them on and off.

I'm going to be the rain on the parade. The build sounds great and Linux should be perfect. Some of their software is geared for winders and even a simple spread...

Re: Make a program only available to other User?

Do you not trust the admin? i.e. why would you give a user access to a program that the sys admin cannot access? I could understand the reverse to be true, but this just sounds counter productive. If anything ever went wrong with said program, the admin would be required to fix it.

If my machines start to become less than reliable, I just look at the government auction sites and see what they have to sell. My last Lappy (on which I am currently typing) is an I5 with 8Gb RAM and SSD. Only cost about $150AUD

Re: convert .avi files for television

Could you just plug your 'puter into the TV and use the TV as a second screen. You can then play anything you computer can. I've not worried about file conversion for years as I have a dedicated TV computer.
