Mint 19.1 XFCE slow with display problems after latest updates

I have a Samsung RF511 laptop with Mint 19.1 Tessa XFCE installed. Yesterday I ran the latest updates from the Update Manager. This included a kernel update (to 4.15.0.54.56) and some other large updates (eg LibreOffice). But - having read the forum posts about problems with "mesa" and "xfwm4" - I d...

Re: Wine in Linux 19.1 Mint, a treat or a threat?

Alvin ..... I have a dual boot set-up with Win7 and Linux Mint, and I also need to access those files and data which are still in the My Docs/Pics/Music folders of Win7. Paradice and others are right to say Wine is not needed to access files stored in your Windows partition. Wine is a way of running...

Re: [Fix available] Window manager xfwm 4.13.0 broken after last mesa update

I happened across this thread just before running the latest batch of updates from the Update Manager on my Mint 19.1 XFCE system. I can't pretend to understand 90% of the discussion and troubleshooting in this thread - I'm just glad that there are people with the skills to analyse the problem and t...

Re: epson all in one will print but not scan

Check this thread viewtopic.php?f=51&t=294603 for a related discussion about getting the scanner component of an all-in-one printer/scanner to be seen when it's connected over a wifi network. Mint's firewall (UFW) may be part of the problem.

Re: [Probably SOLVED - again!] Canon MP560 scanner - worked with 17.3, not with 19.x

Well, it looks as if the problem I've just had may have been a temporary glitch. The cause is still a mystery. I wondered if it might have been a consequence of a kernel upgrade, but that seems not to be the case. Whatever the problem was, it seems to have cured itself. .... at least until the next ...

Re: LM 19 Canon MG5650 scanner not found, printer OK

This is one of several threads about problems with Mint 19.x seeing printers but not scanners. The most frequent response seems to be a recommendation to install the relevant scanner-drivers if available (Canon scangear, Epson, Brother, whatever). Maybe that does offer a solution: quite a few thread...

Re: [UNSOLVED] Canon MP560 scanner - worked with 17.3, not with 19.x

Oh dear.... a month down the track, and I now have to mark this thread UNSOLVED and reopen the discussion. The "solution" described in earlier posts worked for me - until now. Suddenly and inexplicably, Simple Scan can't find or see the scanner component within my Canon MP560 (though the printer sti...

Re: Another Timeshift question

Hi Larry, It's formatted ext4. Since posting my query, I've done a bit more exploring. Although the Timeshift GUI indicated that I had removed the two monthly snapshots, leaving only the one initial snapshot, I thought I would "browse" to see what I could see. In a new window which warned that I was...

[SOLVED] Another Timeshift question

I'm still trying to get to grips with Timeshift. So on my "spare" laptop running Mint 19.1 I configured Timeshift to take just a monthly snapshot; and I set it up to save the snapshots on to a 15GB USB stick - reckoning that this should offer enough space for a handful of such snapshots. Well, I had...

Re: Updates in Mint 19.1 - to be or not to be?

OK Pjotr .... As far as I know and recall, I haven't adjusted the Preferences from whatever the defaults were when I first installed 19.1. I've just had a look. This is what the Preferences in my Update Manager show: Screenshot_2019-06-25_21-06-17.png All the impact levels 1-4 are ticked "Visible". ...

Updates in Mint 19.1 - to be or not to be?

I'm still slightly puzzled by the way Update Manager in Mint 19.1 determines which updates to install. In previous Mint versions, it was possible as the user to select a priority or risk-level: and I would then simply install all the updates which Update Manager offered with that rating or risk-leve...

Re: Dual Boot, Windows 7, would like to install 19.1 on top of 17.3 foot print

I had exactly the same setup - Win7 and Mint 17.3 in dual boot in a legacy/BIOS - not UEFI - setup (but NB the boot arrangements**) When 17.3 reached end-of-life, I simply formatted the partition on which it had been installed, then from a Live session of 19.1 did a 'something else' install which pu...

Re: [SOLVED] Timeshift - question about config files

Thanks AndyMH - you are rapidly becoming the go-to source of info on everything to do with backups! I'm OK with relying on the default settings in Timeshift to make backups as protection against a system crash. I don't think I have made any changes to the default settings. There is always a risk tha...

I've been trying to follow the twists and turns of this discussion (and the digression into font sizes and screenshots....). I don't want to complicate things further or take the thread off-track. But I'm slightly baffled as to exactly what Peter Linu is seeking to do and why. Aside from the passwor...

Re: [SOLVED] Timeshift - question about config files

I had a look at this thread because - by coincidence - I took a Timeshift backup yesterday before the latest kernel upgrade, and out of curiosity I looked at the Timeshift settings/exclusions/filters. NB I haven't yet (touch wood) had to do a restore from any of the Timeshift snapshots I have taken....

..... Recently, I have read that "/" is the boot partition and "/home" is the partition for the main folder to be in...... I don't know if there was simply a typo in the words I've highlighted above, but just to avoid the risk of confusing other readers.... "/" is often described as the " root " di...

Update done, all running smoothly... Have had a look at your site, gm10 , and I'm deeply impressed. Haven't yet taken the plunge of adding ppa and downloading the tweaked update manager, as I'm normally very cautious about installing anything from sources other than Mint itself. In this instance I g...

Re: Binning Windows 10

As a convert from Windows to Linux Mint, the last thing I'd normally do is discourage others from making the same move. But it does seem that in certain respects - notably graphics-heavy usage - Linux doesn't (yet) have the apps, programs or features to rival the specialist programmes available to W...

Thanks AndyMH ..... much to study and absorb in your helpful response. I confess I had thought of adding, in my previous post, a comment to the effect that of course I realise that I have the option of using BackInTime (or similar) to backup/preserve my personal files and data rather than tweaking T...
