Re: ATI proprietary driver and Linux Mint 18

One final question: At this point, what would I do to get the machine totally running on the AMD graphics, rather than just one application?

Re: ATI proprietary driver and Linux Mint 18

Actually I think that's got it. Now when I do: DRI_PRIME=1 glmark2

one of the lines of output is:

GL_RENDERER: Gallium 0.4 on AMD OLAND (DRM 2.49.0 / 4.10.0-35-generic, LLVM 4.0.0)

Re: ATI proprietary driver and Linux Mint 18

Well tell you what, my hardware is at your disposal, if I can make a contribution, even if it's just "try this and tell me what it says," I'll help where I can. Output of xrandr --listproviders: Providers: number : 3 Provider 0: id: 0x68 cap: 0x9, Source Output, Sink Offload crtcs: 4 outputs: 3 asso...

Re: ATI proprietary driver and Linux Mint 18

does that "[EDIT]" link on the above 265 post help to in fact (per-application) switch to your 265? I.e., starting applications with an explicit DRI_PRIME=1? The good news is that command doesn't throw an error or cause a crash. Bad news is it doesn't do a thing. Trying it with glmark2 in both case...

Re: ATI proprietary driver and Linux Mint 18

So I've got a slightly different model Dell with the same discrete GPU the R7 M265. I get adequate desktop performance out of the integrated graphics, but I can't seem to switch to discrete graphics at all; I don't know if it fails because I just can't get it into gear. The sticky posts seem to be w...

VGAswitcheroo seemingly not doing anything

I've got a Dell laptop with hybrid graphics. Running Linux Mint Cinnamon 1.82 with kernel 4.10.0-35. inxi -Gx output is: Graphics: Card-1: Intel Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller bus-ID: 00:02.0 Card-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Opal XT [Radeon R7 M265] bus-ID: 08:00.0 Display Server...

Icon Selector Behavior in Cinnamon

I would like to suggest a minor change to something that's been bugging me for a bit. Currently, in Cinnamon 3.2.7,when you right click on an icon and click "Properties," you're given a little box with the icon graphic in it. If you click that box, the open dialog appears...and always takes you to t...

Re: Custom menu category icons in Mint 18.1/Cinnamon 3.2

I messed around with it some more and got it working, somehow. The icon is in about ten different places, so I'm not sure which is necessary.

Re: Custom menu category icons in Mint 18.1/Cinnamon 3.2

What do you mean "replace the category icons?" Replace them with what, how? I'm adding a category, why can't I just add a .png image? What's so special about them?

Custom menu category icons in Mint 18.1/Cinnamon 3.2

I want to add a category to the Menu. I right click Menu, click Configure, and by and by I get the menu editor. It lets me add a category, put stuff in it, and it pretends to let me choose an icon. I can choose one of the ones that's already there, but I want to use my own .png file. When I choose m...

Re: Mint 18.1 secure boot help

It seems that running the install with no internet connection did the job. Typing this from Linux Mint 18.1 booted in EFI via the good old grub menu. Thank you very much for the very helpful suggestion. Now to install a lot of things.

Re: Mint 18.1 secure boot help

I'd rather not kludge it together, I'd rather do it right. Is there a solution to the grub issue during install?

Mint 18.1 secure boot help

So I hosed my 17.3 install trying to figure out my graphics card. Fine, I had backups, time for a fresh start. 18.1 it is. I've got Windows 8.1 on this machine and I don't really want to touch that. Downloaded and burned the .iso to a thumb drive, it would boot from the thumb drive just fine, but du...

Mint 17.3 hybrid graphics confusion

The more I look into this, the less I'm sure I know what I'm doing. I'm trying to figure out which of my two graphics cards I'm using, and when. I occasionally play games like Portal 2 on this machine, and I use CAD/3D printing slicers ALL the time. Yet it's a laptop and I'd still like to websurf/us...

Some icons in window list broken

Ever try to google something but you just can't come up with search-friendly words for what you're looking for? Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3 with the stock window list. You know how when you launch an application, say LibreOffice Calc, and it creates a button on the Window List with the icon of LibreOff...

Re: No sound, Libre Office Impress.

I fixed this problem with

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libreoffice
I guess not all of the packages for libreoffice get installed with the operating system ISO.

Task Bar Organizing

My biggest quibble with Cinnamon so far is the operation of the task bar (or whatever you call it in Linux). It seems you have a choice between Windows 98-like behavior where each window you open gets a new tile stacked left-to-right in the order you opened them, or Windows 7-like behavior where lik...

Re: AMD Radeon R7 problems

I would avoid Dell's Inspiron line. I ordered a 7357, and it worked great when it wasn't suffering complete and utter failures. After spending five months going back and forth with Dell (and replacing a power supply, several motherboards, the display, the antenna and the power brick) they finally re...
