Re: Kernel Updates, is it advisable?

I did just that and it does not show any 4.4 kernel. After boot sysinfo still reports I am in 3.13.
In /boot/grub/grub.cfg there is this mention: "menuentry 'Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon 64-bit, 4.4.0-116-generic (/dev/sdb2)"
but at boot the menu onlu mentioned 3.13 as usual.

Re: Kernel Updates, is it advisable?

I'll try the update, although I might be looking for trouble, but what the heck, you won't learn if you don't dare to try.
So if it fails will it still let me boot or will I be totally out?

Re: /etc/fstab error at bootup

It was eventually able to work and I don't know how or why. This is my /etc/fstab: # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a # device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices # that works even if disks are ...

Re: /etc/fstab error at bootup

Here is the result of "sudo lsblk -f". The dev/sde1 cannot be mounted after a reboot. This is what I have done : 1. Did the chkdsk /f and it deleted a lot of orphaned files and recovered orphand files, lots of them. 2. Reboot the windows system twice 3. Boot up Linux Mint 17.3 4. dev/sde1 was automa...

Re: /etc/fstab error at bootup

When I follow the suggestion to do the chkdsk in windows and reboot twice, all data on the disk becomes totally unreadable by windows and by linux mint. Had to redo all reinitialize the disk, create the partition and format. Then it works again but when I reboot the same error message comes up. How ...

/etc/fstab error at bootup

My system is a Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon. One of my hard drives died and I replaced it with a new bigger one. It was an NTFS formatted drive since I use it as a backup of my windows files. When I installed the new drive I made it a NTFS formatted drive too and gave it the same label name. Copied all ...

Re: Upgrade Vitualbox Failure.

Thank you for your explanation. Yes I do like to know how to update or remove the kernel so I can use the right one. It was my ignorance that I updated to the 4.4 series but didn't notice that it is already up to 119. If you can give instructions, how to do that, I will appreciate that very much. I ...

Re: Upgrade Vitualbox Failure.

Well I was following suggestion from BG405 mentioning the latest 4.4 series. I am very weary about kernels because I am still a novice so that is why I follow what is suggested.
I will update the kernel to the latest that is available if that is what you are suggesting and try everything again.

FAO Cosmos
I mentioned that my system is Linux Mint 18 and the trusty versions were initialy installed and updated before .
I download the update from the prompted site when one becomes available. To be honest it is the first time that I heard about the xenial version. Please excuse my ignorance.

Now that you mentioned it, this time it did not prompt me to download and install the extension pack. Attached is my system info. Upgrade Vitualbox Failure.

The latest version installed on my Linux Mint 18 was virtualbox-5.2_5.2.6-120293~Ubuntu~trusty_amd64.deb. When I got a notice to upgrade to virtualbox-5.2_5.2.8-121009~Ubuntu~trusty_amd64.deb I upgraded it as usual. However the outcome was not as usual. The upgrade was successful with no warnings or...
