Re: Oolite

I can't seem to find Oolite in the official repositories. You may be better off with the official download already linked at oolite.org anyway. At one time some of the dependencies were specifically modified to work with oolite, so maintainers who didn't realize this would sometimes compile it with...

I am relatively surprised that the usual 2 brands have not been suggested While I find my $300 fender acoustic sounds ok for what I paid, after doing some research I feel that both fender and gibson have lost site of the artistry and are just in business to make money for the stockholders. I'm more...

Re: What are the aims of Linux Mint?

The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish I think the point you may be missing is that the giant company will not be providing that same quality of fish caught by an independent fisherman or the range of choice available from those independent fishermen. Me, I'll never be tha...

Re: Problem with old cupboard hinge

You can try a penetrating oil such as WD-40 but if the corrosion is in the threads it may take a while to work, if it works at all. Give it an hour at least to soak into the threaded area. You may even hit it with the oil a few times throughout the day and let it soak in overnight. If you decide to ...

Re: Well I give up

Been there, done that. I meant no offense. I was just trying to point out that from a scientific point of view, the brain, as we currently understand it, requires oxygen in order to function. I figure you're you're too ornery to let it get you down, all the years of being handbagged obviously gave ...

It can be demonstrated with a simple thought experiment.
Try this experiment: stop breathing, if that oxygen out there doesn't really exist your mind will be just fine without it.

I recieve an alert from LifeLock
Hopefully you aren't paying for such outdated information, I read about that on clem's blog the day after it was discovered.
This is one of the reasons I trust mint. I think clem addressed it in a very professional way.

Re: How to make a favorite from an app from a tar.bz2 file?

I am using Tara with Cinnamon, not Mate. Maybe this is why. I have no experience with cinnamon but I believe its still possible to create a custom launcher, if you get one on the desktop you can just drag and drop it in the menu. I think cinnamon has a "Menu Editor" or something like that to select...

Previously I could at least make a link on my desktop.
Is this not possible anymore?
With the Mate desktop you can open the "Main Menu" app (its in the menu) and create a launcher from there.

Re: Install linux programs

Some people get discouraged because they think the more advanced way is the only way available. I agree with that. Audacity was the first software I tried to compile, I had been using mint for about 8 months and I couldn't find it in the manager, I don't think it was available for mint 14. What I f...

Re: Install linux programs

Plenty of reason, especially for a newcomer, to go with the easy and foolproof way: - Open Software Manager from your menu - Search for 'audacity' - Click on the correct search result - Click 'Install'. No reason to ignore the question though, I think encouraging people to learn is a good thing and...

Re: Install linux programs

How install i this program. You have to compile it first. That means you download the source code and install the needed dependencies then run the command make from the proper directory in a terminal. It can often be tough to understand which versions of dependencies are needed and some aren't even...

Re: How to install a downloaded program

I can't even find the libraries in the software manager. Can anyone help? You probably won't be able to use compile it properly then. What command did you use to download it with and if you don't mind what is it you are trying to install? Many users here do use some PPAs or other independently avai...

Re: Need help installing a package with .tar extention

Once you extract the files (I think most file managers have a right-click dropdown option to extract tars) there should be a readme inside, read it. If the software is well designed there will be instructions that tell you how to go about compiling the software if needed. Often compiling is not need...

Re: Flatpak vs .Deb

Be aware that if a flatpak actually does bundle individual libraries then you're trusting the flatpak maintainer to take care of security issues with them. Really? Ya I prefer to get the software from the person who actually wrote it, I have seen a few examples of maintainers who actually screw the...
