Re: Flatpak vs .Deb

Hope that clears things up Thanks, I think we are on the same page with the security status of most software no matter where it is gotten from. I don't even believe that the stuff in the official repository is nearly as well maintained as most people here seem to believe, but I can agree with your ...

Re: Flatpak vs .Deb

Be aware that if a flatpak actually does bundle individual libraries then you're trusting the flatpak maintainer to take care of security issues with them. Really? Ya I prefer to get the software from the person who actually wrote it, I have seen a few examples of maintainers who actually screw the...

Re: Catweazel - over and out

I like hope you might reconsider as well. Your years of experience have been a very valuable asset to the members of this community. I believe you feel its the best thing for the people coming here for help, but I am not so sure. Its not just your great wisdom that will be missed but your sharp wit ...

Re: Mate is missing in software manager

I think adding a desktop is cleaner than removing a desktop. Every package in the repository is this way. Even if you mark a package for complete removal it will only remove the base package and leave all the dependencies that were installed with it. You can sudo apt auto-remove but I'm fairly cert...

Re: kde along side cinnamon

so what is best way to completely remove KDE? just a simple sudo apt remove kubuntu-desktop? That will only remove one package kubuntu-desktop, , if you installed from synaptic you can look in the history to see a list of what was installed along with it. I believe sudo apt auto-remove will remove ...

Re: kde along side cinnamon

then why are display managers set up to switch so easily between them? From what I've read installing multiple DEs works fine. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=256024&start=20#p1380782 I trust the opinion of a mint developer on this one. Unfortunately as he points out cinnamon and ...

on Ubuntu 9-10-11 etc
Mint may be installing a different version of gcc from the one that was available for those older versions of Ubuntu. You could try looking in synaptic for older versions of gcc.

Re: Desktop Security

I opt for a very simple password so I can enter it as quickly as possible. Ya I've got a really simple password too, it seems like the only thing you can do to maintain reasonable security even though there's stuff that is password protected that has nothing to do with user security. In fact there ...

For Linux Mint 17.x, LMDE 2 and 32 bit systems you'll have to build the engine from source. Thankfully this is not very hard.
Thanks xenopeek, its good to see this going somewhere. I've tried the version in the manager in the past but its not much more than the engine.

Re: Preferred applications list missing installed apps

Further background on the xdg system Thank you. The link it was very helpful to me. Still stored in ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list on mate 17.3 it seems. So in order to make my system behave properly I have to edit this file to add audio/x-flac=audacious.desktop . Makes no sense to me, s...

Re: Preferred applications list missing installed apps

So nobody knows the answer to the actual question because I would like to know how to edit the list of preferred applications as well. Maybe if I could remove the video player completely from the list mint would open music files with the application I selected. Mint ignores me even if I choose softw...

Re: Weird Taskbar Behaviour

I am a long time MATE user and have to say I have not encountered this. Happens to me on 17.3 mate, but not daily. It doesn't seem to be associated with any specific program that I can tell. Just had it happen yesterday on an install less than two weeks old, almost nothing but default programs on i...

I offered to do one free system update a few months from now if he is happy and then from then on a small fee to maintain.
You are going to charge the guy to enter a password and run the update manager?
Forcing him to run an out of date system is a great way to decrease security.

Re: Trouble installing a tar.gz program

I copied the downloaded tar.gz file to the /bin folder but cannot figure out what to do next. I'd do as jimalyn suggested, it ran fine from my home folder too. I like to run these kinds of programs from my home folder so I don't have to use my sudo password to modify or move them. I double clicked ...
