Re: blender software update

I have downloaded 2,79 and 80 and find them very unstable and think this is because im running it from the download. 2.79 runs fine for me on Mint 18.3 Mate from my home folder. I also have it on another machine with 17.3 Mate and it works fine on that too. You should check if the flatpak in the so...

Re: Canonical Pursuing A Hardware/Software Survey For Ubuntu Installations

stop using social media sites like facebook ?? Who said anything about using facebook? This is about your operating system collecting data. The operating system has control over every single bit of information on my computer right? I don't need my OS collecting data and reporting to ubuntu or debia...

Re: Debian 9, Solus 3, tested over weekend

there is no software center It has the synaptic package manager, which I now use exclusively anyway, but you are right about the updater you just run sudo apt-get update to update. Since the spectre and meltdown stupidity I've been updating everything anyway so there is little difference right now....

Re: Search engine for Mint

I follow the instructions in GitHub as far as the command Make and it will not proceed Sometimes the error messages will help diagnose the problem but there can also be dependency conflicts with what is already installed on your system. Don't you think that in order to go beyond the stage of being ...

Re: Search engine for Mint

I tried to load from GitHub but I get as far as seeing the extracted files but it is not in Software Manager. You will have to look in the readme file and see what it says about installation. Typically only software that is available in the repository is visible in the software manager unless you a...

Re: Cannot find Software Manager

I see some links that say that this program is the main method to install software in Linus Mint. About 'Software manager' I did what you said opening Synaptic and searching for 'Software manager' and installing libraries. As you have found out synaptic can be used to install software too, for many...

Re: Tips and Suggestions for Newbies

One suggestion to Newbies: don't encrypt anything unless it's absolutely necessary. Why doesn't the user deserve to have a protected system? I don't really like the idea that my stuff is wide open to all, but I got to enter a password to even change my GPU. Apparently the user is the least importan...

But, I am concerned my internet banking provider (in the UK) will not be impressed if my on line banking accounts are hacked and when they ask me 'what av have you got?' I think I would be more concerned about the security of your bank's servers, they are certainly more likely to be a target of ski...

Re: Bodged install.sh - how do I clean out leftover files

I tried to install again, but a folder that it would create in /opt was already there, and I was told to choose another location. Am concerned about potential conflicts if I do that, run the software, and there are parts of the failed install remaining. Is it ok to delete folders of this software f...

Re: Software Manager: How can I help keep it's offerings up to date?

What can I do in situations like this to help keep the program versions offered by Software Manager up to date? The most accepted way is to do as you already have done and install from a PPA then I think you should receive updates for it from the manager. No need for a rolling release for just one ...

Re: Software Manager: How can I help keep it's offerings up to date?

"You can update your system with unsupported packages from this untrusted PPA" If you don't trust the actual developer of the software why would you even consider installing it just because its in the software manager? I certainly don't trust software manager anymore since it installed wine as a de...

If you don't want them to update automatically just disable the item 'Flatpak' in startup applications. Dyslexic. The developers can turn it off. Then people who want automatic updates can enable them or just install windows if they want their pc to do their thinking for them. Worked out really wel...

They are supposed to share deps so once a few are installed that may not be so bad.
Still not really interested in auto updates though, that's why I got away from windows.

Re: level 3 and 4 updates, is it safe to install all of them?

I started using Timeshift to create a restore point before installing updates with 18.3. I've had a low level update cause problems with specific hardware even though it didn't break the whole system. If I had been using Timeshift then, I could have easily restored the system to its previous state. ...

Is it even worth to try to run linux and have a decent time with nvidia products? AMD can be just as bad, but I don't think many people have as many problems right out of the gate as you have. I recommend installing drivers from the driver manager, although if the card is old enough there will be n...
