Re: Format Hard Drive Before/During Mint 18 Install

Thanks. fabian85! It's good to have confirmation of that. The education will help me next time I am setting up a machine.

Re: Format Hard Drive Before/During Mint 18 Install

Just went ahead and used gparted (on the Live USB) to delete all the Windows NTFS partitions, then used Disks to overwrite the entire hard drive. Then will restart my install program for Mint.

Format Hard Drive Before/During Mint 18 Install

I have an old laptop with a corrupted (possibly infected) Windows 10 OS on it. I want to completely eliminate Windows and everything else on the disk before installing Mint 18. When I run the live USB install program, it gives me the option of using the whole disk, and thereby overwriting the entire...

Re: Firefox & Thunderbird Won't Launch

Thanks again, Cosmo, for all you help and suggestions. I agree that I could use the new admin account and just continue on. I had thought of that idea myself, but I was concerned that maybe there is something "special" about the original admin account (the one owned by the installer). For ...

Re: Firefox & Thunderbird Won't Launch

Thanks very much for your perseverance in helping me. I ran into a few glitches with the Users Setting manager, including having it lock up a few times. Eventually, I did create a new user with sudo privileges and followed your instructions to rename the /home/john/.config/dconf file to dconf.bak. T...

Re: Firefox & Thunderbird Won't Launch

Thanks for continuing to show me the way through this. In answer to your question about running any programs via sudo: The only instance of that was going into Thunar, opening the ~/etc/pulse folder as root, and then editing the pulse config file. I have done this on my other two Mint machines, in o...

Re: Firefox & Thunderbird Won't Launch

Sorry about the misunderstanding. I guess I wasn't paying really good attention to what you were saying. Thanks for your patience. I created a new user in Mint and logged on as that user. I was then able to open Firefox and Thunderbird. However, I am still unable to run those programs when I switch ...

Re: Firefox & Thunderbird Won't Launch

I found a reference here https://linuxnorth.wordpress.com/2014/06/05/firefox-doesnt-start-in-linux-mint-17/ That says : "After installing the new release of Linux Mint on my development machine, I found that Firefox won’t start. Navigating to Menu – Internet – Firefox has absolutely no visible ...

Re: Firefox & Thunderbird Won't Launch

No card added to laptop. Onboard graphics.

Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

Don't know how to add a new user account to Firefox, since I have yet to get Firefox to open.

Thanks for hanging in there with all the ideas and suggestions.

Re: Firefox & Thunderbird Won't Launch

Booted from Live CD (USB). Firefox opens normally. Now, I should add that I cannot connect to the Internet, because the proper wifi driver is not installed on the Live CD. On the laptop hard drive, I did install the b43 driver before trying to open Firefox. Could that have caused an issue? I have th...

Re: Firefox & Thunderbird Won't Launch

Thanks for the suggestions, Cosmo. This is a brand-new install, just done an hour or so ago. Firefox and Thunderbird never really opened, so there was no way to create any new profiles. And I didn't copy any old profiles onto the drive. Like I said -- a brand-new install. However, I will fire up tha...

Firefox & Thunderbird Won't Launch

Over the past several months, I have installed Mint 17 xfce on a Dell desktop and on a Dell Latitude E6400. I have had not problems with either. Today, I used the same bootable USB to install Mint on another Dell Latitude E6400. In this case, neither Firefox nor Thunderbird will launch. Firefox is t...

Re: Problems with XFCE Login Screen

Thanks to Buzzsaw and Richyrich for the very helpful suggestions! Both of them work! And using the GDM theme makes the password window very stable. Even if I move the mouse around, the focus stays in the password window. I sure do appreciate the help. It was getting pretty frustrating to have to try...

[Solved] Problems with XFCE Login Screen

I recently migrated from Bodhi Linux to Mint XFCE 17.1. I have some minor trouble with the login screen. I put my cursor in the password window and start typing, but I usually only get a character or two in there and I somehow lose focus on the window, and no more characters are entered until I put ...

Re: Wi-Fi Connectivity and AOSS

Again, I thank JeremyB. As you suspected, the firmware-b43-lpphy-installer appears to have been deprecated and merged into the firmware-b43-installer. So it appears that all the old options (for the BCM4312), as well as the b43-cutter, have been bundled into the one installer package. I followed you...

Re: Wi-Fi Connectivity and AOSS

Here is a quick follow-up question:

Since my chipset is an LP-PHY, do I want/need to instead use

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-lpphy-installer ?

(Sorry if this is a stupid question. I really struggle with this wifi connectivity business.)

Wi-Fi Connectivity and AOSS

I am running Mint 17.1 Xfce on a Dell Latitude E6400 laptop. The wireless card is Broadcom BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY. To get wifi working, I had to install proprietary driver bcmwl-kernel-source v. 6.30.223.141+bdcom-0ubuntu2 : Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source. Even after installing t...
