Re: Mint Debian

dagnammit! I'm really getting into KDE now :(
Think I might have to keep with kubuntu or mint kde until a mint debian kde edition comes along :)

Re: Mint Debian

I would assume rough edges is more to do with teething troubles that any new distro (kind of) is going to face. I would also assume these rough edges would naturally be ironed out through the upgrade process. Taking the splash as an example, if it was decided mint was going to use plymouth or splash...

Re: Mint Debian

I miss Sid. I used it for a long time and it's what got me into linux in the first place. I would love to go back but since no debian distro (except ubuntu/mint with some tweaks)) works with my soundcard it's not to be :( Also rules out me being able to use any debian mint desktop I've been so longi...

Re: Mint Debian

Should be said that by default, a debian testing install points to "squeeze" (or did last time I tried it).
So to keep it testing that's something you would need to check.

Re: Mint Debian

Hehe, yea the wording of that article does kinda sound like it classes sid and testing as one of the "frozen" type releases. Both Sid and Testing ARE rolling releases though they do go into a bit a frozen state when it gets close to a stable release. But yes, you can continue to use Testing and Sid ...

Re: Mint Debian Testing

Doh! I can't check at the moment but I think I may have actually added the STABLE debian multimedia repo.

Re: Mint Debian Testing

If anyone has previously tried it and can save me the time, I'd appreciate knowing how it went. if not, I'll report back when I've tried it. Yes I have tried it here on a statler install, with a full dist-upgrade and gnome desktop manually installed after hdd install and THEN adding the source line...

Re: Mint Debian Testing

Unfortunately I cannot use netinstall. As mentioned before, it does not allow wpa when configuring the network so I can't get a connection and I can't use wired at the moment. As it happens, I used crunchbang and installed gnome from that but it seems debian testing suffers the same problem as ALL d...

Re: Mint Debian Testing

As debian seems to be popular here I just thought I would ask, those using debian testing or debian testing with the mint tools... How on earth do you install debian testing? Last time I tried installing I used disc 1 from the download site and everything was fine. Lately I have been trying allsorts...

Re: Debian as Base

I would guess any lack of updates in sid/sidux are mainly down to squeeze getting close to a final release.

Re: Debian as Base

I think if you spend time reading through the sidux forums there are problems between the development team and the users too.

There's a lot of bad feeling there and probably more going off than I fully understand but enough to certainly make me steer clear of sidux for the forseeable future.

You can add me to the list of volunteers too :)
I have tried the installer from git on a debian testing live install but failed on me so probably best to wait for an iso of some sort.

Re: Debian as Base

I found it unstable at times (when it broke, it REALLY broke) but other times I had less trouble than I have had with ubuntu at times. I always found sidux's attitude to gnome quite amusing/annoying - any mention of gnome was pretty much frowned upon, not just unsupported but it was along the lines ...

Re: Debian as Base

I'm just wondering... There are quite a few distros based off ubuntu that have all the codecs and extra wireless support and everything installed out of the box. But are there any GNOME based distros that do the same with debian testing? I have tried crunchbang but I really don't like these lightwei...

Re: Was 9 worth the trouble?

So if you want to have the speed up again, you have to disable the effects. I run with effects on both mint and ubuntu. With exactly the same effects and desktop/panel/theme setup, ubuntu still runs faster for me. Like I said, dunno why. I'm not saying Mint 9 is drastically slow or sluggish by any ...

Re: Was 9 worth the trouble?

I found Mint 9 pretty much identical to running Mint 8, which to me is no bad thing as I consider Mint 8 to be the best OS I have EVER used. However, before installing 9, I had been running ubuntu Lucid through the betas and did a fresh install after release and compared to Mint 9, Lucid seems much ...

Re: Mint Debian

I'm not so sure about using a Sid base. I did use Sid (and then sidux) for quite a while and I found gnome to be a bit flaky at times.

Rather than install mint then change the sources I have decided to install a debian testing CD and then add the mint stuff and see how that goes.

Re: Mint Debian

I have the Isadora RC (not yet installed) and I'm wondering what would happen if I immediately replaced the lucid repos with debian testing? From what I understand, the latest ubuntu was actually based off Testing rather than Sid so it shouldn't be too awkward. Although Lucid runs perfectly, I am a ...
