Re: [SOLVED] Please HELP me create a Live USB Mint 18 MATE with persistence

Below pic is what my 32GB USB drive looked like on Gparted after the Manjaro 17 install - and after I shrunk the swap partition from the 8GB partition the installer created... [Edit:] FYI, word of warning ... It works without issues installing onto an external USB drive, and does not touch your exi...

Re: Which VPN should i use?

I just subscribed to PIA two days ago. I've installed it on my mint 18.1 distro and cannot connect as yet. I'm in the process of getting help from the support folks on my issues. If I can't get things resolved there, I will gladly go into the details on this forum. Everything installs just fine, bu...

Re: Which Linux distro should I install for my portable computer?

I agree with Pjotr's suggestion that you use your whole disk for whatever Linux distribution you install, particularly with an old machine and as a new Linux user. One of the more nagging problems I encounter with multiboot systems, even with Linux multiboots (no Windows), is when kernel updates rew...

Re: Which VPN should i use?

No encryption at all - PIA bumped me up to express help and asked me to send them debug reports. I'm waiting for their response. The only other thing I can think of if that your ~/.pia_manager/openvpn_launcher.64 (and the .32) must be owned by root even though they are in your home directory This w...

Re: Which VPN should i use?

I don't trust any of them and I don't know enough to determine which if any I can realy trust. How do I really know what they do with my information? Right now it appears that your only real guarantee is the reputation of the VPN company. That reputation can only be preserved by a trustworthy servi...

Re: Which VPN should i use?

I'm sure it gets rated quite well on its own website (the link you gave). I bet I could find even more complaints if I cared to. Oh, you probably could. But these folks seem to like it, and so do these . Anyway, I've not tried them. I have no opinion on their product. I only know that they sponsor ...

Thanks for the suggestions and link to further discussion. The $40/month option looks good and I'll pursue it. I think the NYT article mentioned that one. I appreciate your replies.

Re: boot-repair

I realize this is an old thread, but in any case, an annoying problem I've encountered the last few years regarding grub is when one of my multi-boot Linux systems (on several laptops I own) updates the kernel and then updates grub, often tossing all systems other than the one most recently updated...

VPN recommendations [Solved]

Now that ISP's in the US have been given free rein to data snooping/selling, do folks have recommendations for reliable VPN services available on the Linux platform? To date I've only used occasional browser specific services such as Hoxx, but I'm looking for recommendations for reasonably priced ($...

Re: Linux for my 80 year old father?

Well, as a dithery old 64-year old who got my first data processing/computer job at age 22 mucking around on a CDC 64/6600 after getting out of the navy (communications rate) in 1974, I was hired by some rather computationally astute people in their late 30s or early 40s at the time. If folks like t...

Anyone installed Mint/LMDE2 to a recent Dell XPS 15?[SOLVED]

I'm thinking about purchasing a new fairly high quality/performance laptop in the next few months, and am impressed with the Dell XPS line. The XPS 13 has an option for Ubuntu pre-installed, so am wondering if the XPS 15 might be compatible out of the box. I just viewed this model with Windows 10 in...

Two things: 1) For some reason, no "New Topic" button appears on my forum screen. Never had this problem before. What am I missing, or what has changed? Forgive me, as the only way I can post is to reply to a topic. In this case, "network monitoring concerns" seems close to my is...

Re: Linux Mint 18 “Sarah” Cinnamon released!

@curtvaughan Before giving up completely, is it feasible to try a clean install of LM18? That would clear out any old drivers and do a better job of detecting your hardware correctly. Thanks. I'll probably give that a try before throwing in the towel - just have to find out how to get a non-booting...

Re: Linux Mint 18 “Sarah” Cinnamon released!

Don't expect any resolution to this, but I have an old MBP 1,1 that is eleven years old. I have run Mint 17.2 / 17.3 for the last three years with no problems. The original install was via reFind, etc. On a lark, I attempted to go through the upgrade process to install Mint 18 cinnamon. Two odd thin...

Re: One more reason to avoid Windows 10

Yeah, maybe my concern is vain. Linux evangelists will make even a useful feature sound like it's another conspiracy only because it's from Microsoft. Microsoft is not the mean megalith of the PC world that it once was - the company is on the defensive, constantly playing catchup to innovati...

Re: Hard drive usage

This is an interesting thread. I found the following link which addresses a known issue of Thunderbird profile size. As it uses the "mbox" format, messages get stored in individual text files in the local profile. When you delete messages, they are flagged - so you will no longer see them ...
